After months of waiting I finally received information from the National Archives on the Civil War pension for my G Grandfather William Curtis Morgan. William married Mary Eveline Townsend and three children were born of this union. One being my Grandmother Hattie (Hester) Magnolia Morgan who married Benjamin Harrison Coatney. William Curtis Morgan died in 1868 of diseases he contacted while he was a prisoner of war at Andersonville POW camp in Georgia. The year after his death his wife Mary married William J. Johnson in Scott County, Indiana. This marriage also produced 3 children. George, Hattie, and Daisy Johnson. I believe George Johnson married a lady named "Bell" and I think they lived in Morgantown, Indiana. I have no other information on these 3 Johnson's and would like to hear from anyone who may have any additional information. One bit of information I found in this file (over 100 pages) was a death certificate for Mary. I was under the assumption that Mary died i!
n Arkansas as the family had moved there in the 1880's. However this death certificate indicates that Mary Eveline Townsend Morgan Johnson died in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana on October 16, 1901. The address on the death certificate indicates she was living with Ben and Hattie Coatney. If anyone can supply any additional information on these people it would be appreciated. Don Coatney
Nelda;
I do not have her but I will spread the word.
Can any Coatney researchers help on this one?

2. Eddie Wayne Meyers. Son of Edward Meyers & Ella Mae Coatney.
Born 21 May
1946.
George Washington Coatney born December 1, 1830 died August 5, 1871 married his wife Arminda Bernard Spurgeon on February 8, 1857 in Austin, Scott County, Indiana. This union produced four sons.
The oldest was Thomas Jefferson Coatney born December 15, 1857. Thomas was a lover of the outdoors in the first half of his life. He traveled up and down the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Lived for a while in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and his home state of Indiana. He never married. He was a marksman with the rifles of the era and a great hunter. Midway through his life he became somewhat of a recluse. He hand forged a huge knife (almost a sword) and carried it wherever he went. I still have this knife. My father told me he built a cabin with a double floor because he was afraid "they" were going to get him. People were frightened of him. In 1891 he was arrested. It took six men to hold him down. He was committed to the insane asylum in Madison, Indiana and spent the remainder of his life there. He died December 23, 1934.
The next son was George Combe Coatney born March 29, 1860. He was the cowboy of the family. When you watch old western movies and they mention the drifter coming to town they are talking about the likes of George Combe Coatney. He was in several gunfights. Shot and killed a man in Arkansas. GCC was shot at least twice. He also traveled all over the country. He was a lumberjack, gold miner, coal miner, raisin and other fruit harvester, and a jailbird. His first daughter Grace Ethel Coatney was born May 4, 1884. He married Eliza Ella McClellan on May 26, 1886. She was the mother of Grace. On March 22, 1887 the second daughter Bertha May Coatney was born. On September 6, 1887 Eliza died. I do not know why. She is buried along with most of the Coatney's and Spurgeon's in Zoah cemetery Scott County, Indiana. After her death the two girls spent time with the McClellan family and with Arminda who was by then married to Robert Cook. George Combe Coatney died December 27, 1898 in!
Yuba County, California and is buried there.
Next was Benjamin Harrison Coatney born March 28, 1865. At the age of 6 his father died and he was raised by Benjamin and Alvina Spurgeon brother and sister-in-law of Arminda. I believe BHC was named after Benjamin Spurgeon. BHC married Hattie Magnolia Morgan on December 24, 1884. To this union were born 4 sons my father Albert Edison Coatney the youngest. BHC died October 5, 1925 in Indianapolis and is buried beside Hattie at Zoah.
Last of the 4 sons was Charles Edward Coatney born June 29, 1869. CEC never married. He liked to write poetry and I have several of his poems. He died March 10, 1894 in Perla, Arkansas and is buried there although I could not find his grave on a visit I made to Perla, Arkansas last year. I believe CEC was somewhat of a womanizer. There are possibly children. He caught what at the time was called bad blood. Today known as syphilis. This was incurable in 1894. He elected to end his life with an overdose of morphine.
If anyone can relate to this family I would like to hear from you. Don Coatney
