My G Grandfather George Washington Coatney (born December 1, 1830 in Kentucky) had 4 sons. One of his sons was named George Combe Coatney and became one of my heroes as he was a drifter and gunfighter and lived the life that movies are made about. George Combe Coatney died in 1898 in Yuba County, California. I never knew how he got the middle name Combe. This past weekend I opened an old box of books that I had stored in a cabinet in my garage for the past few years. In this box of old books there was one very old leather bound book with the aged binding sewn together. I opened this book and found a hand written note written by George Washington Coatney indicating that he bought this book on January 16, 1853. The title of the book is (SYSTEM of PHRENOLOGY). I have other old family communication indicating GWC studied Phrenology and taught it. Then I flipped through another couple of pages and found the authors name. This book was authored by non other than George Combe. Now !
I know how George Combe Coatney acquired his middle name.
