Hello Betty Essick;
Sorry it took me so long to respond. The only Mary Coatney I have in my database was a daughter of Nicholas S. Coatney and was born about 1869 so it is unlikely she is the Mary A. you are looking for. Most of the Coatney's I have lived in southern Indiana.
I do not recall talking to Doug Coatney. Do you have his e mail address? My Morgan cousin Dave Wright lives in Speedway, Indiana so it must be close to you. My father was born in Indianapolis and I lived there as a child.
I have not written a book on the Coatney family although I have given it some thought. I have a lot of old Coatney family communication and pictures posted at the following URL. http://www.rootsweb.com/~inscott/Coatney.html Makes for interesting reading. My cousin John Phillips who lives in Georgia has written a "Courtney / Coatney Family Workbook". He frequently sells copies on ebay or you can contact him at this e mail address jphil36(a)yahoo.com and I am sure we will sell you one. It is worth the money as there is a lot of Coatney information in this book.
I will forward your questions to some other Coatney researchers and hopefully you can find a connection. Don Coatney

Don,
My name is Betty Essick. I started researching my family tree about a year ago. My search has lead me to a Mary A. Coatney (census 1900, 1910, and 1920) She was born Mar. 1851, W.Va. She married a Wm. L. Smith of Henry Co., New Lisbon, IN. on 28 Jun 1874. They had three children; Joseph L. (dob Sep 1883), Kittie P. (dob Sep 1886) and Harla N. (Jan. 1891) Smith. Harlie Smith is my mother-in-laws.... father. Harlie died leaving four girls behind, oldest (my mother-in-law) was five years old at the time. Mary A. Coatney moved back to Portsmouth, Va. to live with her son, Harley, after what I believe was the death of Wm. her husband. Can't verify any of this. Can't seem to find where they are buried. I can't find any connection to my Mary A. Coatney prior to her marriage to my gr. grandfather. I have information to go get the marriage license and some of the birth certificates. I spoke with a Doug Coatney, here in Indianapolis, IN. He referred me to you. He said !
he had talked to you about his family. And I got a e-mail today from a Dave Wright referring me to you. Can you help ... or give me some suggestions. I understand you have written a book on the Coatney's. I recently made a road trip to New Lisbon, IN. found two old cemeteries ... with no help. I found out from an old gentleman that lived there, that there was a third old cemetery. Which now is located under I70. Can you help ... or give me some suggestions. Thanks. Betty Essick
Does anyone have any information on these Coatney's? All were married in Montgomery County, Indiana. Don
James COATNEY married Rebecca JOHNES, Montgomery County, on December 5, 1839
Jefferson COATNEY married Hannah E. MILLER, Montgomery County, on October 8, 1846
Rebecca COATNEY married Silas JONES, Montgomery County, on January 20, 1848
Hello Patty Coatney;
The Coatney list is still intact but at a new location as
follows.
COATNEY-L(a)rootsweb.com I will forward your message to this list
as well as to some Jonathan Coatney descendents and researchers.
I know there are several people who will be very interested in
this new found information you have. Can you scan it and send it
via e mail? Let me know the outcome. Don Coatney

Hi Don, This is Patty Coatney... I have been "reading"
and watching the Coatney list for some time now...Am I
reading this correctly, that they have either moved
the list or discontinued it? I also have found a very
old letter written in pen and ink, straight pinned
inside an old magazine. This was written about the
death of Johnathon Coatney...the letter was from a
lodge member..it is very readable, however I have had
some difficulty reading the style of penmanship...I
know I have spoken by email with you before..so is
there some other address I now need to seek out for
the Coatney list? Thanks, Patty Coatney

Dear Friends and Family;
I am afraid I have an announcement to make but I am not sure just how to go about it. My dear Cousin Bonnie Lee Coatney has left this world.
Late last month Lisa and I went to Dallas, Texas with the intent of meeting Bonnie for the first time. Bonnie and I had talked on the phone several times and we had communicated via e mail trading family history for several years. When Bonnie and I finally met it was the first time for both of us that we met a "Coatney" family member face to face that was not part of our core family but a direct Coatney descendent of Archibald Coatney. I brought with me and gave to Bonnie a piece of paper that Archibald had at one time held in his hand and signed. She was as thrilled to receive it as I was to give it to her.
Bonnie was not in good health. She was wheelchair bound and had Rheumatoid Arthritis and other medical complications to the point where I could not understand how she could possibly operate a keyboard. She weighed less than 80 pounds but had a heart of gold. During our visit we laughed and told old family stories until it hurt to laugh any more. It was such a great time.
Last week I had a grand surprise in my US Post office box. A letter from one Coatney to another Coatney. Much the same as the things I have been sharing. Bonnie had hand written a letter to me. I was once again thrilled. I believe this was the first time in I do not know how many years that Coatney's had communicated using a stamp and envelope. I was planning answer Bonnie using the same medium. I delayed my action too long.
Today Bonnie's mother Martha called me. She said Bonnie died last Sunday. May she rest in peace.
There is a memorial for her on the web. As soon as I get the information on it I will pass it along. I will miss her.
Don Coatney
Hello Carol;
I have not made a positive connection to Jonathan Coatney
from my line however my friend Don Coatney (not to be confused
with me as I am the better looking one) does come from that line.
I will forward this to him as well as a couple of other Coatney
researchers in hopes that you can find what you are looking for.
Let me know if this helps. Sincerely, Don Coatney
