I have a letter written in October, 1925 from Bertha Baurlie or Bourlie or Burley (the signature is hard to read) to my grandfather Benjamin Harrison Coatney. Bertha was a daughter of George Combe Coatney brother of BHC and his wife Eliza Ella McClellan. She first Married Earl A. Wells and I believe this marriage ended in divorce but I have no proof as of yet. She then apparently married a Baurlie. This letter is written on stationary from the Marion County Home. Bertha mentions in the letter that she was in the City Hospital for two months and then Social Services sent her to the Marion County Home. She does not say why she was in the Hospital nor why she was in the County Home. I am looking for any information on Bertha May Coatney Wells Baurlie I can find. If any of these names sound familiar please let me know. Bertha May Coatney was born on March 22 1887 and married Earl A. Wells on December 23, 1906. I do not know when she died or where. Thanks in advance for your co!
nsiderations. Don Coatney

I may have posted this before but ran across it again and elected
to send it. What is interesting about this information to me it
that my mothers family bought land on the banks of Salt Creek in
Monroe County, Indiana in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Might
have been the same land described below. My brother fell from a
bridge spanning Salt Creek and drowned in the mid 1940's. I spent
a lot of my growing-up years at my Mothers Uncle James Kent's
farm along the banks of Salt Creek. Enjoy, Don Coatney
MONROE COUNTY, INDIANA BLOOMINGTON TOWNSHIP AND CITY PAGE 559
RUFUS COATNEY
was born August 20, 1827, in Bloomington Township, Monroe County,
Ind. He is
a third son and fourth child of Finney and Mahala (Rogers)
Coatney, and was
reared in Monroe County, where he obtained a good education in
the district
schools. When sixteen years of age, he began farming in Salt
Creek Township,
on a farm of forty acres, which he entered from the Government,
and sold,
purchasing a farm of eighty acres, which he lived on for one
year. On
September 1, 1849, he was married to Mary J. Smith, daughter of
Samuel and
Martha Smith, respected pioneers of Monroe County. By this union
there were
two children, one of which is living--Sarah Ellen, wife of C. H.
Showers, of
Bloomington. After his marriage, he continued farming on his
eighty acre
farm, for four years, after which he sold it and rented for one
year. He
then purchased a farm in Perry Township, Monroe County, to which
he added
220 acres, and at present owns 300 acres of fine farm land,
highly culti-
vated. He also owns considerable town property, having lived in
Bloom-
ington for three years, and is at present a prominent citizen of
that place.
He served one year as Supervisor of Perry Township. He is a
member of the
Christian Church, and politically he is a Republican.
