Well it looks as if our Slave Trader, John Williams Coath and
his wife were bigamists as well.
Some time ago I was sent a marriage certificate from New South
Wales for the 1863 marriage between John Williams Coath and
Henrietta Kinamond Fairbairn.
In this John describes himself as a "Bachelor."
However, I have recently obtained a copy of a 1858 marriage
certificate from Limehouse, Middlesex for the same John Williams
Coath and Maria Yeoman.
Closely followed by a birth certificate for their son, Walter
Yeoman Coath in 1859, exactly nine months later, and then a 1862
marriage certificate for Maria Yeoman Coath and Joseph Robert
Bradbrook, in which Maria describes herself as a "Widow".
Now John did not die until 1874, so it looks as though he left
for Australia either not long after the wedding or not long
after the birth.
Maria being left with a young child, I imagine it was far easier
to claim to be a widow than a deserted wife but it seems she did
not stray from her love of sailors as her second husband was
also a mariner.
So with this discovery that adds another 35 previously unlinked
COATHs to the tree, several of which I have addresses for so it
looks as though its time for another round of introductory
letter writing.

Hello everyone
It seems that the Family Records Centre have just released a new
service.
UK residents only (sorry!!) can now order certificates online
for the same price it costs to call personally at the FRC.
Until now the only way to obtain certificates was either in
person at the FRC for £7
or by phone from Southport for £11.50.
I have just ordered a few more this evening. They promise to
dispatch them within 4 working days.
You do however need the index reference number, however as I
have already said in the past I possess the whole of the Birth,
Marriage and Death registers for Coath's.
The address to order certificates is as follows:
http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/
Just send me an e-mail letting me know who you need to order
certificates for and I will supply the index reference.

Hello everyone,
just checking in, making sure you are all still there.
Since my last message I have indexed more of the records which
means I have now linked about 2/3 0f the 4000 Coath records that
are now in my possession.
I have been contacted by several new members of the "Green"
family (descendants of John Coathe 1485) as well as new members
of my own family tree so the list is growing.
I have also been informed of many sightings of COATH gravestones
although unfortunately not containing transcriptions of the
inscription. Most have just been along the lines of "I visited
.....cemetery and saw lots of COATH graves."
I had one stroke of luck recently though when I ordered a couple
of certificates from the family records centre.
I have always wondered why my gggrandfather came from Devon and
had children at a late age in London, so I ordered a couple of
certificates from Islington.
It seems he was married previously, had a son who he then sent
back to Devon to live with his sister, and his wife died in
childbirth with the child dying several weeks later in Islington
workhouse.
I can imagine that he was so distraught that he just abandoned
the two boys until he met another woman 5 years later.
To the best of my knowledge, this wife and children were
unknown to the present family. Without my computer and the
programs I use, they would have remained forever hidden. I am
now going through the rest of the files. Who knows, I may
discover new ancestors of yours hidden away.
On another note, does anyone have any birth, marriage or death
certificates that they could send me a copy of?
As I order these on my monthly trips to the records centre I
will gladly send copies of those that I have to relatives.
regards
