Because we have done DNA testing, we can easily differentiate between
those who descended from James of Edgefield, and James Robert Coats.
Everyone whose Y-DNA matches the Marmaduke, and John Gentleman and his
son, James of Edgefield, will match the R1b1 group, which Linda Coate
descends from. Our James Robert and all who descend from him will match
the R1a1 group. This fact proves the value of doing at least the 37
marker test, since that will show which group you came from. DNA testing
has helped us all separate these two Jameses. It is just sad to see that
mistakes are still being perpetuated in these on line databases.
Everything in our James Robert line matches up by deeds, wills,
censuses, and death records. The only things in doubt are the parents of
James and the dates and places of birth and marriage date of James
Robert and Josephine Elizabeth Webster. Those dates and places have
never been proven by any other written records on file anywhere. Pat
Moran in his book "Exodus from Offaly" has previously expressed this.

I have seen some information on this family but I would like to see birth and death dates for Henry and Sarah Young Coates, and there children.
I would also like to see sources for this information.
Thanks for any information anyone can share. Pat
It's the same with Marmaduke. What I know is absolutely refuted in
the records is still prevalent out there and could be for who knows
how long. Linda

Starting over on James Robert, it's becoming real discouraging to see so
much info that his father was John Coate of Rowan Co. NC. This is
incorrect, as this was John Gentleman Coates.
We know for a fact that John Gentleman Coates was born 1740 and by DNA
he is related to Marmaduke, a cousin or brother. His son was James of
Edgefield, who married Elizabeth Scott. We know this because he
inherited some acreage from his dad, John Gent, in Newberry Cty. He sold
this land to his brother, William, as he was already situated in
Edgefield. I thought this was all settled.
Our James Robert Coatses father is unknown. The only source of record
for this man is a transcribed version of Madison Coatses bible, who was
one of his sons. As far as I know, no one has seen a true copy of this
record, or maybe it is fragile or indeterminable. We know he married
Josephine Elizabeth Webster, but she is listed as Elizabeth on all
censuses.
This error has been perpetuated for decades, and I hope we can all move
past it. John Coats
I misquoted the sheriff's sale defendants by saying it was Zachariah Coates;
instead... it was Zachariah Lamar who WAS married. It was his nephew who
did not marry. If I have the right Zachariah Lamar... this is a link to
info about him.

Does anyone have further information on this Coats lawsuit? There is no
record that the sale occurred; no record in the Court of Ordinary Minutes
only the following newspaper notice:
Published in the Monitor: (Wilkes County newspaper) 6 January 1810.
The abstract reads: Sheriff's Sale, Will be sold, on the first Tuesday in
June next, at the Court-house in Wilkes County... the following property
viz,
third para: Also, 80 acres of land in Wilkes County, on the waters of Rocky
creek, adjoining Thomas Terrell, William Jones and others, the same tract
whereon Asa Hoxey now lives, with the improvements thereon. The above
levied on by virtue of an execution, Joseph Clay & Co. against William
Coats, Nathaniel Coats, Zachariah Lamar, Howel Jarrett and John Bankston -
the property pointed out by Reuben Hill, esq.
Citation: Wilkes County (Washington), Georgia Newspaper Abstracts 1810-1815,
Vol. II, p. 25, p. 28.
FYI: Howell Jarrett was married to Jane Smiley Coats/Coates; he was also a
distributee and administrator along with Nicholas Jarrett (his brother) on
the estate settlement of William Coats. He was an administrator of Lesley
Coats estate. (I can furnish those records as soon as I get them
transcribed).
John Bankston was married to Henrietta Coats (Coates) and lived near the
Coats, Howell Jarrett, and Lawrence Bankston (likely his brother). John
Bankston and Henrietta Coats named some of their children: Howell Bankston,
Lesley Bankston, Peter Young Bankston, John Young Bankston, Henry Harrison
Bankston, Levi H. Bankston, JJohn Jacque Bankston, Cecelia Bankston.
My goal is to learn the relationships of those Coats members in Wilkes
County, GA and their parentage.

FYI Others have theorized that Henrietta is the daughter of Leslie

I'm interested in the Henry Coates because of his wife Sarah Young. She
could be related to my Mom's side of the family. My records are in storage
at the moment, but here is what I had on Henry: Henry and his wife
lived in Richmond, VA but then moved to Wilkes Co., GA. He or his son
Henry were granted 200 acres in a 1774 land grant in St. Paul Co. in 1774
and 200 more acres in Wilkes Co., GA on 1/28/1778. This last grant was on
the same day as a Nathaniel and a James Coates (other brothers or sons?).
(C-1790, E)
What is the circumstantial evidence you have on Henry's possible
daughters? Larry Coates had written me about this family back in 1999 at
larcoa(a)aspermont.esc14.net. Maybe he knows of male descendants for Henry.

The first and last record for Henry Coates of NE GA dates to 1772. I am
interested in knowing the background of this Henry Coats/Coates who may be
the same as Henry Coates who married Sarah Young of VA.
There is circumstantial evidence that Henry Coates and Sarah Young had the
following children who resided in Wilkes County, GA until ca. 1815:
Nathaniel
Lesley or Leslie
Henrietta who married John Bankston
Jane Smiley Coates who married Howell Jarrett
William
James

Well, I went ahead and signed up with Ancestry.com, and am going to have
my Y-DNA tested, in order to compare with our current DNA. More than a
little confusing, since the name is close, but they use Sorenson. I
don't see how it could be any different, unless they use different
sites. I'd like to get some feedback from any others who may have done
this. I still can't figure out the ancestor of James Robert Coats since
one source says he married Elizabeth Webster before 1805, but could this
have been James Coats of Edgefield, who married Elizabeth Scott, and was
definately the son of John Gentleman Coats. If anyone can help me with
