Since many Coates families tie into this line (particularly those out of the
Miami Co. OH area), I wanted to pass this along. Back in April 2009 the Jay
Family Association (JFA) published an article to its membership pertaining
to the following....
"DNA has now confirmed that Thomas JOY of Hingham, Massachusetts is not an
immigrant ancestor to the JAY family in America."
This article has now been moved and posted on the public section of the JFA
website at www.jayfamily.org. There is a link in the menu at left that will
take you directly to the article. If you have additional questions you may
email me directly.
In addition, the Jay family DNA project and other related family genealogy
will be discussed at length at the annual Jay Family Reunion scheduled for
October 16-17, 2009 in Troy, OH. The reunion is FREE to all interested...we
have several cemetery trips and genealogy presentations slated. More info
is available on the gathering at www.jayfamily.org. Come and meet your
cousins and have a great time. You won't be disappointed.

I noticed an error below. The 2nd neat find we have in our new DNA
evidence is that the William of HALIFAX CO., VA now has a cousin
match. Sorry about that. :) Linda Coate, admin.

We have new DNA test results in and up with some useful results. We
have another member matching the Robert Coats, b. Yorkshire, Eng in 1627
and died in Lynn Massachusetts group. All 3 of these members have
believed they are tracing their lines back to Robert Coats and all of
them have matching DNA - so DNA evidence is supporting their theory. We
also now have a a cousin grouping for William Coates of Lynn,
Massachusetts so those of you who don't have matches yet, take heart!
We also have a new Tennessee Coates group that has come into the radar
too. These new results are up at
http://www.ancestrees.com/dna/family.html. ENJOY! Linda Coate,
admin. P.S. Take a minute to look at this page and see if your
results and links are still exactly the way you want them. You are
always welcome to submit new or updated information to go with your kit
number. It can be a summary of your lineage (showing no living persons)
and the main sources used per generation or it can be as simple as your
email address. If you've proved your lineage further back, please
always let me know that so we can relabel the kit's oldest ancestor and
get those updated sources and generations in. Thanks much!

Yes, I thought there was an Alexander in the DNA project....:)
The research I referenced before and the Marm group may already have it, is
by a Mrs. K.S. Rohwer, titled *The Coate Families of Newberry South
Carolina*, most of the documents we have from her research and most of her
research references others, with some will and deed references...she also
states that Charles died in SC and the Ann there later is his wife; but I
don't think that is supported at least by the records we have...as I recall
or her research states, she was a widow and there are no Estate Records for
Charles in SC and he would have died at a time when they were keeping
records...so that is why I believe they moved out of SC....but like all the
rest that is speculation....she tries to sort out the John's but there are
even more Johns there than she has....:)

I wouldn't forward that e-mail to anyone. The John Alexander related to
our line was John Alexander Coats, son of James Robert Coats. He moved
to Texas sometime in the 1870's. They stopped for a while in Coryell
Co., just south of Waco, as this was, at the time, the edge of Indian
Territory. Then they moved on to Cottonwood, Callahan Co., Tx a little
later. He was a commissioner of Callahan Co., in the 1880s. Some
Griffins of Issaquena Co. Ms.also located there. I had the whole history
of this family, but unfortunately discarded some. John A. had a lot of
sons, a George Washington, and a Leonard. Leonard died sometime in the
late 1990's. Most are buried there at Cottonwood. This is a different
family than the one you are talking about. John W.
Yes, I was indeed thinking of William and Frances' daughters....:) and yes,
Rev Will's daughter Rachel did marry a William Reed let's I think they might
have married in Callaway County MO...my William and maybe James were the
only kids that married in TN...William in Wilson County TN ...
As far as Rev Wills' kids are concerned we have the Bible record of them as
well as estate papers in Callaway County, MO that documents them all as well
as in some cases who their grandkids were, since some of the kids died
before Nancy, Rev Will's wife did....

Yes, Rev Will had a son named John, documented in Wilson, his brother's
bible record of the family and numerous documents in Callaway County both

And once again...the DNA project is probably the best way to help sort all
this out...:) I will post what I get from Frances...some of it is old
research...I might also remind folks that Thomas wife Sarah Ann also had a
possible son John, when Jesse sold Thomas' land, they except a portion *that
John lived on*...Frances' father I think felt that James Coats in GA, was
connected to us as well...his belief that or the person that wrote the info
about it, was that James Coats' family may, or some of them may have gone to
Jefferson County GA...I still believe that Charles in Jefferson County GA is
Charles and Ann Coats from Kelly's Creek in Newberry County SC...we have no
record that Charles died in SC although some of this research seems to
assume that...the Ann who died there with the daughters, I know I'm being
non specific here, but this is from memory...anyway, there is no indication
in the records that she is Charles' wife...and Charles and Ann did sell
their land about 1792, which is about the same time that the rest of this
family left SC...so I don't think the Ann in SC is Charles' wife...and we
have an estate deed, a transcribed one from GA, showing which of James' kids
took his land and I don't believe it named a Charles or William in it...the
John in this deed is assumed to be Georgia John of SC and I did in fact find
at least one reference in SC to a Georgia John Coats, not sure it was a will
record or deed and I think he was just a witness to the document, so we do
know that there was a connection to Georgia at least with one
John...Marmaduke also had a connection to a Mariah Coats in GA...also the
James Coats in GA didn't have a son William if I recall correctly...
Both Frances' father and my father, although no contact over the years, have
a family tradition that a James Coats was in our direct line of ancestors
my dad believed he was a Quaker from Philly and I think Charles Coats in MD
puts us closer to the PA Coats area...but records from that area are so
scarce still, that it's still up in the air, no land records from PA on line
yet....the closest we've come to any connection earlier out of SC is Charles
Coats wife Sophia's son William but wife Mary in MD.....Charles and Sophia
probably also had some daughters we don't know about...so that could account
for no land records in MD after Charles dies, although there are no estate
records for he or his wife...
Also earlier research seems to but that William wife Mary in the Polk Swamp
area as the same William who died after he'd lost all his family, buried I
believe in Charleston SC, there just isn't any documentation to connect
those two Williams' as being the same person, it has just been assumed over
the years that they were....
So get those Coats cousins into the DNA project....:)!!

Frances, The only Wilson Coats I have in that time period in Missouri
was your Wilson, son of Rev. Will, but I didn't have him living in Polk
Co., Missouri specifically. Were the children this Wilson was having
in Polk co born at the same times as the children of your Wilson? If
so, that's one way to quickly know there were 2 Wilsons. Linda

hi? my father, charles ninian edmonston, married to vivian coats, my mother had a lot if information that i just sent to charlotte about texas and other places coats, that are names i dont' recognize at all. my father corresponded in the 'early days', aBOUT? 1950s and so, re: any coats he could find .? there wasn't much known in those days that we know now, especially about the reve. william coats line that charlotte and others have been tracking. /. ?? maybe there are some connections here.? my father copied whatever coats information he found and some does't make sense to me.? i'll let charlotte decide what is "us' and what is "them", maybe in texas.? frances e;

Linda,
I also wish more people from the line of Group 1 would get involved in
the search and share as much information as possible to solve this
mystery. My Nathaniel Coats/Clarence Alexander Coates line has some
really shady characters in it. It seemed that a lot of this family had
scrapes with the law and some spent time in prison for murder in the
early 1900's. I have court records for Clarence Alexander Coates who is
the grandson of Nathaniel. Numerous descendants, now living, of
Nathaniel Coats do not like to discuss their heritage but it's all
history and most of the family are great people. I know Nathaniel Coats
had relatives in East Texas (Rusk and Nacogdoches Counties) even though
he is on the Brazos County, Texas census for 1870. His wife left him and
took their four year old son from Brazos County to Nacogdoches to stay
with relatives about 1899 - 1900. She supposedly went to Galveston in a
wagon for supplies and perished in the hurricane of 1900. I hope I'm not
writing too much but maybe someone out there knows something about this
line. Thank you.
Martha

I'm curious. Who did you father believe was the father of Rev. William
Coats.. If you have that, we certainly would also love to know the
sources for that information. This is great. Thank you so much. Linda

This is not too much at all. In fact a wife taking a 4 year old could
explain some of the difficulty the Texas people have sometime had in
following their lineage. Thanks. Linda

Well, It appears we have another interesting problem to solve. The
member that's been writing with all the alluring tidbits about a
possible lineage to Charlotte Coats's James, John, William group is
related to the 1st group on our DNA page at http://www.ancestrees.com
which is called Alex/James for TX/TN according to another researcher.
The good news is that they are obviously both Coats lines. So anyone
out there that knows you are related to Alexander Coats, we sure would
appreciate you joining the group to ascertain which line is which. I
thinks it's the mystery that keeps us all involved in this. :)

Linda,
I also wish more people from the line of Group 1 would get involved in
the search and share as much information as possible to solve this
I hope I'm not
writing too much but maybe someone out there knows something about this
line. Thank you.
Martha

Hi John. My husband, Bobby Coates, belongs to this DNA group. He is the
g-grandson of Nathaniel A. Coats. I have searched and searched for the
connection to Nathaniel & Alexander but have been unsuccessful so far. I
know there is one because of verbal information Bobby's father, Clarence
Alexander Coates, passed down to him. The name Alexander has also been
passed down from generation to generation in Bobby's family. I would
enjoy reviewing the long email list as to why some might not want to
test. If you don't mind sharing it, will you send it to me off list at
grandbanna1(a)juno.com? I will check my email later this afternoon. It
might just answer a few unknowns for me as well. Thank you so much.
