Well, we finally have a definitive answer on which group is related to
Big John Coate of SC in our DNA project. John Coats was able to find a
descendant of Wright Coate who is clearly named as the son of Big John
in his will. John did so much to finally help us know, and we thank you
much John!!! Kudos goes to that participant too. What Wright Coat's
DNA tells us is that Big John is related to all the people in
Marmaduke's group that believed they were related to Big John. As a
descendant of Marmaduke, I had people write me from Big John's line
that had the tradition that he was Marmaduke's brother. I didn't
believe it likely till now. The only strange connection I had to him
was that Big John's descendant's wife in the early 1900's received all
the family information for my Marmaduke and I always wondered why.
So, for all of you who've been pondering your relationship to Big John,
we just had a big piece of the puzzle drop into place. I've placed the
new DNA evidence up and renamed the Marmaduke group to Big John and
Marmaduke Coate because there are more people currently in the group
with ties to Big John than Marmaduke. We've also received back 2 more
kits evidence who are waiting for more persons to join to find cousins.
We've had another new member sign up this week. We are going to town
people. Who would have ever thought we were such a diverse group?
Linda Coate P.S. The info is up at
http://www.ancestrees.com/dna/family.html Enjoy.
John,
Thank you so much !
I am very interested in this group and anything that places Pollard Hickman Coates with this group.

Some of you on the list may be interested in some research I am doing on
B.F. Coats, who probably died in Coryell Co, TX in 1882/83. The person I
talked to mentioned Pollard Hickman Coats, and another Coats. I will
forward via this list anything I find, unless it is too voluminous.

The 3 kits we have received back aren't an exact match to any group, but
one for sure is likely to still be a cousin match if the number of loci
in the kit is extended. I am waiting on the oldest known ancestor for
each kit number before I take the time to redo the page at our site, but
you can currently find the Family Tree DNA version of our site with the
new data at the bottom of the page at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/coats/default.aspx?section=yresults. One
kit is sorted higher up on the page in alphabetical order by it's oldest
known ancestor, Jordan Coates. Thank you new members who have
joined. We hope that as more kits come in, you'll find close cousins
to join forces with in your research. Linda Coate, Admin.
