John Coats wrote; Neil, I know. Guessing isn't science. There was one
scientist on 60 minutes a couple months ago who tried to clarify all
this and explaining that, if you go back just 5 generations, you have 32
ancestors, only one of which is your Y-DNA ancestor. That doesn't mean
to me, that if you have the money you shouldn't test. It means those
two guys who started GenealogybyDNA are making a lot of money based on
1/32 of non-scientific data. I had my m-DNA tested, and talked to
Bennett Greenspan, one of those two guys, and he stated the H
designation is shared by the majority of European descendants, and tells
you where your ggrandmother comes from. However, the Y gene has really
helped. Who would have thought there would have been about 12 different
strains of Coatses in the US, none of which are even distantly
related? John W
>These models are based on the assumption that the local indignous people have been in the same spot forever or a guess about their migrations. I'm not yet ready to have my m-DNA tested to tell me where my ancestors came from 50,000 years ago. The model is a guess, so your results are based on that guess.

There is an article in the LA Times picked up by our local paper about
the results of the Human Genome Diversity Project, which will be
published in the Journal Science which came out today. They are talking
about going back 100,000 years. They do these studies by testing local
indigenous groups of people and comparing these DNA samples to samples
taken today. These kind of studies don't seem to me to be that
scientific, in that they are using empiric evidence(observation) to come
to a conclusion. However, its seems to be accepted by scientists all
over the world, so far at least. How about that Global Warming? We
haven't been out of the 20's for 5 days now, and we have an inch of ice
on the ground. My brother says it's sun spots, and this will continue
for 10 years. Seems to be as good a theory as these others. John W
Hi John,
Agreed! Y-DNA testing seems sound science to me. I just need to find a maleCoats in my line. I have not had contact with any Coats male cousins in 50 years.
I am descended from James Coats, born in SC about 1804, who had son James Henry Coats who had my great-grandfather John William Coats in 1870 in Dallas. I'm sure there are bunches of Coats in the Dallas/Mesquite area; I have just not worked hard enought find them. The progenitor of this line is unknown. Some say M. D. and "Blind Mary" Coats.
Neal in Dallas.

False Alarm. Hopefully nobody panicked when I sent the last e-mail
about hemochromatosis. In this weekend's paper there was an excellent
article by Dr. Donohue which clearly explained hemochromatosis. He
showed that if you only have one gene you are a carrier, and will
possibly not have any symptoms at all. My new Dr explained that my iron
levels are only moderately above normal, and since this only showed up
lately, there hasn't been enough time to cause any organ damage. He told
me to go to the Red Cross and donate. He says plenty of people would
like to have that blood in as much as it is iron rich. I'm totally aware
of my own health problems, and I'm the only one who can do anything
about it, which I'm now doing. Best of Health to you all. John

This is for the person that wrote the group in the last couple weeks
about Samuel Coats of Halifax Co., VA. I found a deed that is indexed
from Deed Book 15 in that county, pg. 500. "Jan. 26, 1793 from Joseph
Hunt of H, to Samuel Coats of H, for 28 lb, about 75 acres in H on the
branhes of Buckskin Cr, the north side of Cobbs Rd, and bounded by
Watkins, Sneed (formerly Palmer's), Ben Hun_, and Pucket, Benjamin
Hunt. Signed Joseph Hunt. Wit - none. Recorded Jan. 28, 1793."
If these neighbors are neighbors of other Coats you find, that is a lead
that suggests that you have found the Coats family that is related to
your Samuel. Hope this helps. Linda Coate
Ok, this is a sorta transcription of the listed Robert Coats of Prince

daughter Sarah Hay and her son Robert Hay is named in the will as his
grandson. He also appears to have had two wives named Mary...oh,

Stephanie, Check my sight www.ancestrees.com to find a small line of
Halifax Co., VA Coats that you might descend from. It would be easiest
to look up Guilford Coats in my index as his name is more unique. His
father was William. I don't have a Samuel tied in, but I didn't
research anyone but William and his kids. Good luck. Linda Coate

Hi Listers,
I have joined your list temporarily to report that I found an Orlando Coates
from Nebraska who was admitted to the Louisiana State Insane Asylum in
Jackson, LA in 1902. He appears on the "Register of patients transported to the
State Insane Asylum, 1902" at
_http://nutrias.org/~nopl/inv/civilsheriff/1902.htm_ (http://nutrias.org/~nopl/inv/civilsheriff/1902.htm) . He worked as a
longshoreman at the time, and was 41 years old. The website is that of the
Louisiana Division of the New Orleans Public Library, where the City Archives
and Special Collectiions are housed. There are also court records available
that report the names of the people who were adjuged to be insane and sent to
Jackson. Many of the names in the Register also appear in the court records.
I am not going to remain on the list too long. Just a couple of days to see
if anyone recognizes Orlando. If Orlando was in New Orleans or had family
there, you would undoubtedly find reference to them on the Orleans Parish
rootsweb site at _www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.html_
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.html) . I am one of the coordinators of that site,
so feel free to contact me anytime with questions about what resources are
available both on- and offline.

I am looking for some help. I have posted on here before looking for

I have found her father in the 1860 US Fed. Census. His home was Howard,

Alleghany, New York. He is 72, widower. His Father & Mother's birth place are
Massachusetts. He is living with his Son John H. Coats and family. Any
suggestions on finding his wife's name and more about this family? I have searched
