Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Char,
Have you heard yet from my cousin who is a direct descendent of Thomas
Coates who married Beulah Jacques in Philadelphia? He said he or his sons
might send in their DNA.
Thanks,
Os
Andrea,
Here's another group of which I am on their mailing list. In both
groups they write to each other inquiring about DC, referencing my prior email to
you, and this one, naturally, the Coates, Coats, etc., families. The first
one has been more interesting and fun (the DC one), and the Coates group speaks
mostly about the 18th century and DNA testing. Not too interested in this
at this time.

Do you have anyone in the DNA project that is related to Nathaniel Coats
from Coosa County, Alabama?
I am looking for the parents of Nathan (Nat or Nathaniel) Coats, born
1818 (birth place unknown) and died 1845 in Coosa (now Elmore) County,
Alabama. He is buried in the Coats/Wall cemetery. He was married to
Martha Rebecca Wall. Nathan and Martha had four children:
1) James Coats born 1840 in Tennessee
2) Beatrice Coats born 1842 in Alabama
3) Robert Coats born 1842 in Alabama
4) Nathaniel A. Coats born 1843 in Alabama
Nathaniel A. Coats is my husband's grandfather. We have a substantial
amount of information on the four listed above but would really like to
know more about Nathan Coats born 1818.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Martha & Bobby Coates in Texas
Not that I'm aware of....is your husband in the project? If not a
great opportunity to see if you match anyone....and if not at least
establishes a DNA sample for this line....
The test is really simple, it's two cheek swabs and then you send them
back to Houstan, the length of time for results is longer than when
the DNA projects started but well worth the wait....
Links below to order the kits...
Or go to the Coats project web site at:

Eastern Cherokee applications to the Court of Claims (NATF 83), $25
Land entry records (NATF 84), $40
Full Pension File (Civil War and after, more than 75 years old), up to 100

Full Pension File (pre-Civil War) (NATF 85), $25
Pension Documents Packet containing only selected records (NATF 85), $25
Bounty land warrant application files (NATF 85), $25
Military service files more than 75 years old (NATF 86), $25.
You can obtain copies of the forms from
www.archives.gov/contact/inquire-form.html. More details about the rate
increase are available from the Federal Register, Volume 72, No. 159,

Robbie:
Thanks, very much, for your fillow-up.
My principal interest is in M. A. Glaze and Gideon Glaze, evidently her
father. Gideon married my ggrandmother, Lavinia Turley, in Jefferson Co, Mo in
1853. By 1860, Gideon was not with Lavinia and I have looked extensively but
found nothing as to his fate. My interest in Seleta after her marriage to
Dowdell is hope that it will lead me to M. A. and, perhaps, information about
Gideon.
Records which I will continue to pursue are Seleta's divorce from Gideon and
her will because they may give me information about Martha A. Glaze and/or
Gideon. Those may be available only in courthouses, if at all.
Again, thanks and Happy Hunting,
Bob

Found a "Dictionary of First Names" Hanks & Hodge in Reserved books
at library. I include the meaning as there may be a clue as to origin
for you.
Marmaduke:
m.Eng., of uncertain derivation but generally held as an Anglicized
form of Old Irish Mael-Maedoc (accent over "o"), a devotee of old
Irish Saints, notably 6th Century abbot of Clonmore, and 7th C.
Bishop of Ferns, Mael-Maedgc 'O Morgair, reformer of Church In
Ireland 1095-1148, friend of Bernard of Clairvaut; Modern Gaelic
form,c.1200, pronounced Maol-Maodhog" (' over 3rd "o" and other
spelling my computer can't type... (something like: /m^/'meug/ But
the "e" is upside down, and the "u" is more like an old style u) "So
the name would have been borrowed in England before the loss of the
d". "The name is never common except in small area of North
Yorkshire; at present the name is completely out of fashion". "Short
form of DUKE".
So there you have Marmaduke, (besides the dog... LOL...)

As an aside regarding your trip...be sure to stop (overnight if possible) at
the state park in KY at Cumberland Falls. Lovely upscale type resort, good
rooms, good restaurant too. It was a delightful visit. We went because my
family came thru there and settled near Rock Castle.

Well, very little activity of late. Most of my other groups have been
quite active, and have started DNA testing. Mostly R1b. Griffin,
Stephens, Bozemans, and Brantleys have been busily researching away. On
the other hand, the Limbaughs have been a little secretive. I wonder
why? Many of them are ex-Military or lawyers or Judges. My earliest
ancestor, James Robert Coats, b.1786NC or SC?m. 1807 in Newberry,
Josephine Elizabeth Webster, b.1787SC continue to be elusive. We are
planning a trip this fall to Nashville, TN, Cumberland Gap, and
Newberry. I know there are a lot of Coatses out there who descend from
this pair because they had a lot of sons who had a lot of sons. They
traipsed their way across from NC to TN, Al, and then Ms. I think the
DNA has been a huge help. I never knew I had any relatives other than
what my research unearthed. It was fun visiting our "cousins" in
Meridian. I've met many educated, intelligent people because of the
list, like John of Kalamazoo, Linda in Columbus, and Gary in Portland.
However, I'm not related to any of them. I hope others will continue to
post and do the DNA test, as it has been a great help.
