If you mean the Marmaduke who died in 1822, his stone has not been
findable for our lifetimes. An Older Coate cousin in the area said that
his stone was literally buried under the earth near the large old tree
near the waters edge. Marmaduke donated the land for this cemetery.

In Louisiana A Parish is the same as a County in other states. The
exception is that Louisiana still prescribes to many Napoleonic laws.
Each Parish can and does have different laws, which can be confusing in
the cases of land sales, transfer, motor vehicle laws and others. Filing
a petition for divorce would be under the Pariah court or the family
court in that Parish if children are involved in today's society. How it
actually was in the last centuries may be hard to define without
research in individual Parishes.

Hi,
Louisiana divorce laws haven't changed very much.
Gup
Marriage and Divorce
The marriage and divorce laws of Louisiana are not so loose as those of
some other states. Marriages between whites and blacks is prohibited by
law. Any clergymen has the power to perform a marriage ceremony, but,
before doing so, he must be handed a license issued by the local secular
authorities authorizing the marriage, and must have the marriage
registered within ten days after its solemnization. Absolute divorce is
permissible for the following causes: (1) adultery; (2) condemnation to
an infamous punishment; (3) habitual intemperance or cruelty of such a
nature as to render living together insupportable; (4) public defamation
of the other by husband or wife; (5) desertion; (6) attempt of one
spouse to kill the other; (7) when husband or wife is a fugitive from
justice, charged with an infamous offense, but proof of guilt must be
made. For the first and second mentioned causes immediate divorce is
granted. For the other causes only a separation, which ripens into a
divorce at the expiration of one year on the application of the
plaintiff, provided no reconciliation has taken place, or also at the
expiration of two years on the application of the defendant.
Population
The growth of population, as shown by the United States Census, is as
follows:
* 1810: 76,556
* 1820: 153,407
* 1830: 215,739
* 1840: 352,411

Bob, according to census records, Seleta Coates and Gideon Glaze had a
daughter Martha A. Glaze (Seleta's mother was named Martha) b. 1844 LA.
I have not found any reference to her later than 1850 Census. Seleta
remarried to Andrew Dowdell in Harrison Co, MS (where a couple of
Seleta's brothers lived) on 5 Jun 1851. They had one child Frances
Luella Dowdell (1852-1920) and they moved to Texas (I think initially to
Gonzales County-- I'm doing that from memory).
It sure looks like, on the basis of the documents you've found, Seleta
divorced Gideon with abandonment being the grounds. I don't know what
divorce law in Louisiana was like in those days (what court had
jurisdiction or if the legislature had to be involved as in some
states), but there should be some record of the divorce.

What a terrific list. I am impressed by the activity and cooperation.
The list identifies Seleta Caroline as one of the daughters of Pollard H.
Coates of Mississippi. My interest is in Seleta who was the second wife of my
ggrandfather, Gideon M. Glaze. Most of the following information I obtained
from Seventh District Court Case 210, filed May 21, 1849, West Feliciana
Parish, Louisiana.
Gideon M. Glaze lived in St Landry Parish, La. About Oct 15, 1840, he
married Seleta Coates at the home of her father, Pollard H. Coates near Franklin,
Holmes County Miss. Soon after their marriage, they left for Louisiana where
they resided.
Seleta received property including land, livestock and slaves from her
father both before and after his death. This became her personal and separate
property
On May 21, 1849, Seleta instituted a suit in the Seventh District Court of
Louisiana in West Feliciana Parish asking for a separation of property.
Seleta contended, in the suit, that Gideon obtained her personal property
and sold or consumed it for his own benefit. Also that Gideon had considerable
debt and many judgments against him and that he had left his residence in West
Feliciana and gone to parts unknown.
Seleta asked the court for separation of property and that Gideon's property
be seized and sold to pay all debts.
The court decided for Seleta. On Jan 28, 1851, the Sheriff of West Felician
Parish reported he had not been able to locate Gideon nor could he identify
any property which belonged to Gideon.
Any one out there know any more about this lady? Did Seleta and Gideon
have children? What happened to Seleta after Jan, 1851? Where did she live?
Did she divorce Gideon? Did she remarry?
Any information will be much appreciated.
Happy Hunting,
Bob

Yes, it isOntario, Canada, my understanding is that York is an area near Toronto. I was born in North York for example. I have no idea where in England Charles was born, and I don't even know that Reuben came to Canada from England. I had just gotten those names a few days ago. Thanks for the Link to the national archives, I will give that a shot too.
And yes, we do have several male Coates' who could do the DNA testing, I am just saving up for it.

Yes, that's what I thought as well but I see the other county of
marriage is York, that is England rather than a county in New York...

Looking for a deal? Find great prices on flights and hotels with Yahoo! FareChase.
I am a descendants of John and Henrietta Coates Bankston. They named on of there sons John Jacques, so you know I am trying to connect to Thomas and Beulah. I have been doing some research and find something that I thought others might like to see. Some where down the line maybe it could help with a connection. I have no prove of who Henrietta Coates (1760-1837) parents were.
I found this in a book at the history center in Salt Lake City. This book was, Beaufort County, North Carolina, Deed Book I, 1696-1729, records of Bath County, North Carolina, by Allen Hart Norris. It says no. (848) Ties with Virginia and Philadelphia. Capt. James Beard was familiar with the Virginia coast and the city of Philadelphia when he was the master of the James, sailing between Virginia and New York. Teaches Island lay north of Paramore Island on the East Side of Accomack County, Va. (260) This now appears to be Cedar Island. (261) In 1717 Black Beard and Capt. Benjamin Hornigold cleaned their ships on the coast of Virginia. (262) Shortly after taking the Oath in the summer of 1718, Black Beard visited Philadelphia, a place he reportedly had visited many times and where he was accustomed to being received. (263) Whether or not there may be family connections in Pennsylvania is unknown. One of the women who reported dealings with him was Mrs. Beulah Coates. (264) Scotch-Irish immigrants from Northern Ireland poured into Pennsylvania and many other colonies in the years following the Siege of Derry in 1689. It is unknown whether or not there is a connection between Pennsylvania and the South Carolina or Scotch-Irish Beard family to which Capt. James Beard was most likely connected.
No. 263 says Lee, pp 78-79, then no. 264 says Lee, pp 78-79. Beulah, born in Ireland, was daughter of Thomas Jacques of Bristol, England. The family was in Pennsylvania by 1696. She married Thomas Coates, who died 29 4 1741 (Willard Hess. Quaker Biographical Sketches. 1972) Early North Carolina records show a Coates Creek off Neuse River.
I came home and find this book by Lee. The book, Black Beard, The Pirate, A reappraisal of His Life and Times by Robert E. Lee. On pages 78-79 we have this Mrs. Beulah Coates, (once Jacquet-this was the name of the Dutch governor in Delaware, in 1658,) the grandmother of Samuel Coates, Esq.., late an aged citizen, told him (Coates) that she had seen and sold goods to the celebrated Black Beard, she then keeping a store in High street, No. 77, where Beninghove owned and dwelt - a little west of Second street. He brought freely and paid well. She then knew it was he, and so did some others. But they were afraid to arrest him, lest his crew, when they should hear of it, should avenge his cause by some midnight assault. He was too politic to bring his vessel or crew within immediate reach; and at the same time was careful to give no direct offense to any of the settlements where they wished to be regarded as visitors and purchaser, &c...
This gives me reason to wonder if some of Thomas and Beulah's family made there way to N.C. and would like to find more information about this Coates Creek off the Neese River.
Hope some of you enjoy this little story of Black Beard and his connection with the Coates family. Pat
It's the same person from memory. Cool. Linda Coate
