Steve; Your post is interesting. Most of Pat Moran's book is based on
Sue Coats Sumrall's work. I spoke with him on many occasions, and bought
his book. Linda probably has the best handle on who is related to whom.
There is only one thing we know for sure, based on deeds and DNA.
Gentleman John Coate, who married Mary is a close relative to Linda's
Marmaduke. Those are all of the R1B people in the Marmaduke group. This
is proven by the deed by which James of Edgefield, who married Elizabeth
Scott, deeded the land he inherited from John Gent, to his brother
William in Newberry. Therefor, my James Robert, and all those with R1A
DNA, are NOT related to the John Gent group in any way. Hopefully, this
will drive a stake in the heart of the possble connection of James
Robert to John Gent. It's still amazing to me that there were all these
John and James Coatses in Virginia, NC and SC at that time. Now, if you
look in to phone books, you only find a few in each city. They were
probably all Scots-Irish-English, and could have come in through
Burlington, NJ, and or Charleston, SC.

Since Cathleen and I are just 4 markers off in 64 on fast changing
markers, I'd like to make this postulation. Supposedly, the father and
mother of James Robert Coats were John Coate and Mary McQuiston. I'd
like to see any proof if there is any. Cathleen says her earliest
ancestors were John Coats and Ann Dunnigan. I don't know the earliest
ancestors of Charlotte. Maybe she will post. Now, these two names are
Scots-Irish. There was an influx of Scots-Irish in to America in the
1700's because of the troubles? These Scots had been transplanted to
Northern Ireland. I suppose they were Anglican or Presbyterian. The 4
fast changing markers could have flipped back and forth in 7 to 10
generations. Thus Cathleen and I could easily have a common ancestor in
N or Sc in the early 1700s.
