Yep!! we just need a lot more participants...but for some reason this
Coats group has just not taken off on the DNA project yet....:)
although I must say we sure have leaned a lot getting it going....:)
Hope everyone had a wonderful summer and will be eager to get started
on that research again....:)
I've taken some timeout from research on family...just seems like
there are no diffinate answers without tons of hours in the paper...
So DNA could really help...I'm thinking one person from each line in
the ancestor group....:) cousins and nieces and nephews would be good
candidates...
We'll make it, just takes time....:)

COATES FAMILY HISTORY
I am researching on my paternal side for the COATES family, I have a John
COATES b. abt 1820 Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland who marriedd abt 1845
to Isabella FINLAY b.abt 1826 in Durham. We only know of one child a
daughter, Isabella COATES b. abt 1847 in Newcastle upon Tyne who marriedd in
1864 to John RYLATT b. abt 1845 in Lincolnshire, he went on to be a
councillor with Greta Council in Australia, and we believe served as Mayor
for a year.
They had at least ten children, John born 1867, James, Mary, Greta, Donald
all born in Greta, New South Wales, Australia.
Mary married abt 1900 to George HANCOCK b. 1873 at Kamps Gully, near Greta.
Does any of this info match your family?

Ernie Davis in Australia.

Have any male Coatses from Australia taken the Y-DNA test? That will be the quickest way to find out if anyone in the US is related.

Folks, when you send these links from Ancestry it does no good unless
the person you are sending them to has a subscription with them
also...I don't have a subscription...but you might want to check with
the person you send them too before hand....

Hello,
I'm looking for information on my gggg-grandparents, M.D. and Mary Coats.
Mary Coats is burried near my home in Dallas in the Coats Cemetery of Long Creek. Her headstone reads "Mary Coats wife of M.D. or M.C. Coats, b. 1778 d. 1860. Family lore has it, she was called "Blind Mary"
M.D. and Mary married about 1800 and had a large family including sons Samuel C. Coats b. 1802, James A. Coats. b. 1804 and Thomas D. Coats. The sons were born in South Carolina and each came to Texas through Tenn at variouos times from 1845 to 1858.
I suspect M.D. died before Mary, as there is not head stone for him. And I suspect she came to Dallas to live with one of her sons. I cannot find her in the 1850 census living anywhere.
At first I though that M.D.Coats was Marmaduke, the surveyor, from Newberry S.C., who also had wife Mary. But after finding Marmaduke, the surveyors headstone in Ala, he was much to young to have children starting in 1802. And the children I find for him do not match those of M.D.
A small number of family trees on Ancestry.com show M.D.Coats as the son of Stephen Marmaduke Coats. I can find no evidence to support this, so I am skeptical.
Questions that are bugging me:
1. What is M.D.Coats' full name?
2. What is the maiden name of Mary?
3. Who were the parents of M.D.?
thanks for any help.

I know it is oft printed that Stephen Marmaduke was the son of Marmaduke
and grandson of Henry, but I have done 25 years of research and found
not absolutely one piece of supporting evidence of same. If you have a
male relative that still has the Coate name, then a DNA swab of saliva
would tell us once and for all if there is any truth to this.
Otherwise, here is my reasoning.
"Stephen Marmaduke and 3 siblings are believed by his descendants to
be the son of Marmaduke and Mary Coppock Coate of Newberry, SC and Miami
Co., Ohio However, I feel certain that they are not - for the
following reasons: One, Stephen's birth date would have been 3 months
before Marmaduke is listed with his father, not with a wife, in his
certificate of removal to New Garden MM, North Carolina. When
Marmaduke moved to the Fredericksburg MM and Bush River he and his wife
are both listed in 1769. When Marmaduke begins the purchasing process
to obtain land in Berkeley Co. in 1767, he purchases 200 acres. This
means that there were 3 persons likely in his household, he, his wife
and one child. This would account for himself, his wife Mary, and his
first daughter Esther born in 1766. In his bible records and in Quaker
records only 9 children are listed beginning with Esther Coate. There
is enough evidence to state that the Stephen Marmaduke, Susanne, and
Emily often connected to him are not his children.
Stephen is thought to have been born in PA or NJ. In an exhaustive
search, the only Stephen's found in this country in this time period
were: a Stephen Coats who was a PA Revolutionary Soldier and a Stephen
Coates who was between age 70 and 79 living in New York City, 7th Ward
in the 1830 New York Census records. They both by age could be one and
the same person and this elusive Stephen Marmaduke Coate. (C-1423.)
If I had to guess, I'd be trying to find Stephen's ancestry in the
Massachusetts Coats branch that starts with Charles Coate in
Massachusetts in the 1600's. Stephen is a name carried down in that
Coate family and it is extremely uncommon in other Coate branches.
Stephen supposedly had two children by Polly McNutt and several by
his second wife, Mary Ann Matthews. (E.O.Collins) However, Guy Coates
has found extensive evidence that his supposed son James is highly
likely not to be the son of Stephen Marmaduke. (See James Coate - son
of Big John Coate in this database)"
I hope this helps a bit. Linda Coate

Charlotte,
After finding Marmaduke the surveyor's tombstone in ALA, I know for certain that my M.D. is not the same person. birthdates are not even close.
But M.D. and Marmaduke, the surveyor, appear to have the same ancestor, Henry. Henry's son Marmaduke, married to Mary Coppock apparently had son Stephen Marmaduke, who apparently had son M.D. M.D. is probably a third Marmaduke and may have gone by his intitials to avoid confusion with the others.
I find several trees on Ancestry.com com that supports this, but I offer no proof.
So instead of M.D. being the newphew of Marmaduke, he is the grandson of Marmaduke. Perhaps tomorrow, I can start looking for proof. It is a good thing that my boss is out of town!

Hi Charlotte,
More mystery! Or should I say misery for me.. We have a third Marmaduke from Newberry or we have some bad data. I found information on Marmaduke, the surveyor, moving and dying in Ala. And he has the right wife, Mary and second wife Nancy Rotten,
But the dates are off about 20 years and the children are not right for my M.D. and Mary.

Hello Charlotte,
I have been studying the costs archive and the "Anals of Newberry" Based on the work of others in the archives and a look at the legal documents, I have discovered there are two Marmadukes (as you suggested) in Newberry S.C. in the period of interest. To add to my initial confusion, each was married to a Mary.
Here is my first order approxamation: (I'm educated in Math/Physics)
Henry Coats had children Little John and Marmaduke (1) among others.
Little John had a son, the youngest, Marmaduke (2) "The Surveyor" according to the "Anals",but not sure the legal documents support this.
Marmaduke (1) was married to Mary Coppock
Marmaduke (2) was married to Mary Coates, daughter of James Coats. James and daughter Mary do not seem to be releated to the Henry line.
The name Marmaduke appears on legal documents in Newberry from the 1760 to to 1822. So if Marmaduke (1) moved to Ohio in 1802, then Marmaduke (2) started signing papers at some point and these two may be confused as the same person. I have not compared signatures yet. I need to study the deeds harder to see if Marmaduke (1) sold property before moving to OH. I have not seen anything on the surface to indicate such. I have not found a death date for Marmadule (2), but suspect he died in Newberry before "Blind Mary" came to Texas to be with her children.

GOOGLE TO LET USERS SEARCH ARCHIVED NEWS
Google has launched a service that allows people to searchfor news
articles dating as far back as the 1700s, a move that could broaden
the market for news-archive services. Thecontent owners or their
licensees will handle article delivery and any pricing and billing.
Google says it will not host content itself or charge content owners
or consumers for the service. Google also will not sell advertising on
the service at its release.

New Y-DNA26-37 results have been posted for Kit 9259
This is in Marm's group...this kit matches exactly at 37 markers with
another member of that group who also has the 37 marker test...which
means they match more closely to each other than those in the group
who have also taken the 37 marker test...so this could very well be
another subgroup within that group...
