I've likely found Daniel Polignac Coats in the 1850 census for
Nacogdoches, Texas. They have him indexed as Daniel R. Coots, but
that is easily a misinterpretation of Daniel P. Coats when you look at
the handwriting. He was born in SC in 1792. His wife's name was Nancy
like we already knew it was and his oldest son living with them was
William, age 24. I can forward you the census if you should need it.

Oh, If I only had a nickel for everytime that e's been tried or actually put in......

Just got off the phone with Robert R. "Spott" Coats of Newberry, SC. He
is a former Alderman. He said his ancestors came in through New Berne,
NC. One of his family has done a history. I forgot to ask him about the
DNA test, dang it. He said the name is spelled C-O-A-T-S, without the E.
He said everyone tries to put an E in it. How familiar does that sound?
He told me to send a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and he will send
me what he has. I'll ask him about the test at that time. He said their
ancestors were Scottish, which seems to fit with the R1a1a DNA. I'll
keep ya'll posted.

New Column for NEHGS eNews: Name Origins
NEHGS staff genealogist Julie Helen Otto is our resident expert on
onomastics and name origins. Starting with this issue of eNews, Julie will
regularly report on the origins of given names. Many given names can carry
hidden meanings that will assist researchers in tracing familial
connections. We start this series with one of the most common first names in
America.
Mary (f) -- From Hebrew mrm '____' (sometimes transliterated as mara, Hebrew
'bitter'). Regardless of what some say on the Internet, the use of Molly and
Polly (q.q.v.) as nicknames for Mary (the name borne by the mother of Jesus)
does not indicate the bearer's virginity or lack thereof. Colonial New
England, which teemed with Marys, Pollys, and Mollys, was almost universally
Protestant, and the Protestant churches of those extremely unecumenical days
heavily downplayed the Virgin Mary's role due to suspicion of anything
deemed Catholic. The name Mary was thus used in much of English North
America more because it was a traditional English name than to honor the
mother of Jesus.
Mally (f) -- Scottish/Northern English nickname for Mary.
Molly (f) -- Formed from Mary.
Polly (f) -- Nickname formed from Mary.

If you're at the 25 marker and want to upgrade to 37 markers the price
is now $49.00...again a good deal....:)

FTDNA has reduced the pricing on their 12 to 37 marker tests to
$99.00...so if you're upgrading to 37 markers, this is a good
deal....:)

Hmmm, well from reading that Scotland info...I'd say it appears most
of that family remained in Scotland....although later generations
could have come to the US, but after what 1850, or James Coats, sr
had siblings which came to America or their kids did as well...
Most interesting this....:)

We have one 37 marker test in the NC group...anyone else interested in
extending to 37 in that group...
FTDNA has lowered the prices for some of these marker tests...so those
of you that have not extended your tests, might be interested in doing
so...
Need any help let me know....

We have a new kit order....not sure he's on our list...but Thanks!!
The Coats/Coates/Coate group is such a small research group...we need
all the help we can get....:)
I started the Most Recent Common Ancestor page:
http://www.coatsarchive.us/most.htm
But I need some additional information before, I can complete some of
the entries...
So if you don't see your group there, please let me know what your
line of descent is, back to your most recent documented ancestor and
I'll see what it shows...
This is only for 37 markers and above....I think the more markers the
more accurate the info is...

In Newberry, I got the 1790 through 1820 censuses. I can see why there
is so much confusion. Here is a list of the Coatses in 1790 by parcel
numbers. Obviously, this list has been transcribed with the transcriber
trying to correct spellings.
1. William Coats/Cotes # 382
2. John Coats/Cotes #438
3. John Coats/Cotes Sr. # 439
4. Samuel Coates # 447
5. Marmaduke Coate # 455
6. John Coats/Cotes # 508
7. John Coates # 526
8. Charles Coates # 647
9. John Coats # 1081
10. Henry Coates #1227 More to come.
We stopped at the archives in Columbia, SC, but I only got a list of
researchers. They were quite professional and helpful, but time was
short. Went to Newberry. For those of you who haven't been there for a
while it may be a shock. There is a brand new Hampton Inn in the middle
of town, built with the same stone as all the other buildings. It
appears many people are doing research in Newberry. Here is a paragraph
from the walking tour guide. " The town was founded in 1789 as the
county seat. Though German, English, and Scots-Irish settlers had made
this area their new home since the 1740's and 1750's, there were no
towns when the county was formed . After much debate, the decision was
made to accept John Coate's offer of two acres for the construction of a
court house near the center of the county. This was the beginning of
Newberry Court House Village. Today the city has a population of 11,000,
and is enjoying a renaissance." When I was there in '93 I called the
only Coats in town. He was called "Spot" Coats and is a former alderman.
He still lives there today, and I intend to call him.

My wife and I recently returned from a trip to some Southern
destinations. I will post separate results for each location. First we
stopped at Eutaw, Al., the county seat of Greene County, Al. We went to
the probate Judge's office and found the original logbooks of Deeds and
Wills. Not being prepared, I just copied numerous entries for a James R.
Coates, and a John R. Coates. There is not doubt that these were my
gggreat and gggrandfather. The R in several records for James was
retraced. I believe he was trying to differentiate himself from other
James Coatses. As most know, the County Clerk or whoever entered the
info did all the writing including the signatures. A later recorder
spelled them as James Coats and John Coats. These records were from 1823
to 1832. Forgot to get the census. We were in a hurry as usual. I got a
phone book for the Black Belt area, and to my shock there are 25 Coatses
listed, some with the names of my brother and son. Christopher and
David. No Coateses. Haven't called them yet. I will have to make a
return trip when I'm better prepared. We continued on to Charleston,
where my son met us, and there are several Coateses and one Coats family
listed. Will send more on separate messages. Eutaw looks to be a farming
community with a lot of poverty, but beautiful nonetheless.

All these people are after are your sign on and password to your various
accounts. I have received these emails as being from E-Bay, online shopping
sites, credit card sites, ISPs, etc. for several years. Some of these emails
look convincing and others are very amateurish. However, most or all of these
real sites will tell you they will never ask you for this information.
Good Luck.

Dear List; If any of you get an e-maill from Paypal, do not click on any
links. Forward the e-mail to spoof(a)PayPal.com. They will reply
immediately, and tell you what to do. Paypal is in Omaha, and two phone
#s are 402-935-2050 and 402-938-1984. I haven't been charged, YET. I'm
getting a lot of crap on e-mail lately, and don't know where it's coming
from.
John
Today I recieved a message from Paypal saying I bought a Nokia Cell
Phone for $749. Has anyone else had this problem. I'm not sure if I
signed up with them or not. The credit card company said many times a
fraudulent e-mail will be sent hoping you'll respond with your personal
info. I clicked on the "dispute this charge" link, but found no way to
dispute the charge. 800 info says Paypal doesn't have an 800 number.
Does anyone out there have the phone number of Paypal, and have any of
you recieved this kind of e-mail?
John Coats
Apparently because of the National Geographic project, UofA does those
tests as well and upgrading to the 67 marker tests, have backlogged
the return of DNA results....
So many of our results are way over due...but coming....:)
