Lineage VIII is now verified to Thomas, grandson of the earliest known
ancestor Joseph and his son Joseph. This closes the thought that
Joseph might be Lineage I - a speculation based on a paper trail of a
descendant of a James Barton, born in Fauquier Co VA, who was though
to be James, son of Thomas born 1710. That descendant is Lineage I,
a family that lived in Fauquier Co when Joseph's descendants arrived.
His ancestry apparently ties to the Thomas(1,2,3) family that was in
Stafford Co VA by 1675. Haplogroup is R1b.

It's taking about 6 weeks to get the results of DNA tests back...so if
you've not ordered your kit or upgraded your test...do so as soon as
possible...
For those of you in the R1b or R1b1 group...you might want to
seriously consider upgrading to at least the 37 marker
tests...apparently that haplo group is very common and the 12 marker
tests are virtually unreliable...

Is there any way of proving which William Coates of the two in the BMD index is the correct one before I order the birth certificate?
William Coates born September quarter 1843, Malton Ref: Vol. 24 Page 410
or
William Coates born March quarter 1844, Malton, Ref: Vol 24 Page 1394
I can't use the GRO online referencing tool as the two records are in different years.
William's parents were William Coates born Old Malton circa 1816 and Ann born Leeds circa 1816.
Does anyone have parish details they would be able check for me?
Any information would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks
Anthony

To: MAESSEX-L(a)rootsweb.com
Good morning, everyone. :-)
First, I have now uploaded all of the volume 1 transcriptions. Bill
Boyington put these all into text format and Paula Stephens put that into
web format, including inserting all of the images.
I have NOT updated the index. That is next. Until then, you can read these
at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~maessex/EssexAntiquarian/EA/1897-01.html
Just change the month number to see each issue. If you have a dial-up
connection, these will take some time to load. Be patient.
Now, I have had a number of inquiries as to when this project will be
done. I have no idea. There were some people helping with the transcribing
who have simply vanished. That is leaving it entirely up to Paula to do the
transcribing and web formatting. I have always told people that personal
lives come first, but at least have the courtesy to say you can't help
anymore.
I don't know how many people are on the Essex list, but there are over 300
each on the MBC and MAMiddle lists. I would guess that Essex is about the
same. It seems incredible that out of all those people, who all say how
wonderful these projects are, we can't get 15-20 who can put in ½-1 hour per
week helping with transcribing. The three people who were helping with
putting the new name index together also vanished.
The vital records are just the same. I have Anne Gault, Jennifer Sokol,
June, Steve McBeth, Burt Stackhouse and Libby Ziegenfuss working on vital
records. Each is doing an entire town without help. There are about 3
helping Jodi Salerno do Gloucester and Marblehead.
These people have their own lives and yet they find time to do 10, or so,
pages a week. This isn't onerous. The Essex, and probably one or two other
counties, VRs would have been done a long time ago with help.
The vital records pages are getting 45-50 hits per day. This doesn't even
take into account all of the visits to Jane Devlin's and Ray Brown's sites
nor to the pay sites like NEHGS. I have been told that many people prefer
the format I have put up to that of other sites. Well, maybe I should just
take all of this down and quit wasting my time and that of the transcribers.
I feel very stongly about these people who have aided me over the years,
including those who are no longer able to continue. They have done all the
drudge work. They not only deserve thanks, but a little help.
Maybe this sounds like sour grapes. Good. Think on it.
John Slaughter

I have seen a few places where people have put this couple together in Va.
Can anyone give me information on where and when they were married?
Also what area of Va. are we talking about? Thanks Pat
Hello,
I am looking for information relating to the marriage of WILLIAM COATES and ANN (surname currently unknown).
In the 1841 census the family are living with their two sons JOHN COATES and HENRY COATES in the township of LEAVENING, near Malton, Yorkshire.
From other census information I know that William was born in OLD MALTON circa 1816 and Ann was born in LEEDS circa 1816 / 1817.
William was a agricultural labourer / farm labourer.
I know this is very vague but any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Anthony Laing.
Just had to post this...I decided to do some research on the Barton
family and found one Edward Barton who was the son of Marmaduke Barton
who came to MA about 1632 ....
Most interesting...:)
