We have a new DNA member whose kit was just returned...we blieve this
will be a match to Rev Wills group as well...
We still have one outstanding kit that has not been returned, I have
been in contact with him though...sounds like a young man who hasn't
gotten to the obsession level of this hobby yet....:)
Any one else who is Male with the Coate, Coates, Coats surname on our
list, who hasn't ordered their kit yet? I would encourage you to do
so...
The most recent DNA results returned matched Rev Wills group...an
Irving Coates out of AL...so we are looking forward to getting some
more info on this line, which should help in making those family
connections....:)
We also have one 59 marker upgrade....I am also going to upgrade my
cousin test to the 59 marker...this upgrade could bring you within 3
to 4 generations of a match...so if you have several members of your
group, this could be very useful...and I would encourage at leat a
couple of folks from each group to do an upgrade...however, the more
the better....:)
We have one result waiting at the lab and not returned yet and one new
kit waiting at Houston to go to the lab...we also have the 59 marker
upgrade waiting to go to the lab....
And I remind you that you can find the results at either the FTDNA.com
under Coats Project or visit the Coats Archive link below...

I don't know. I will dig out my old info. to see where that note came
from. I have him only as Irving Coates who had a son named Irving Elmo
Coates. His son was born in 1882 in Eufala, Alabama and was married to
Mattie Martha Catlett. Irving would be my GGGrandfather and Irving
Elmo would be my Great Grandfather.

Hi Steve....oh, yes, DNA testing is most helpful...and I'd get all the
male Coats at the reunion to take the test....:)
You can order kits from FTDNA to take to the reunion with you in case
anyone is interested...:) the kits don't have to be prepaid to get
them, but payment has to be returned with the kit when you send it
back in with the sample...you can start with the 12 markers to see if
you match any of the current groups...but 25 to 37 are the most
helpful and now the 59 marker is really helpful for larger groups or
folks that are just into DNA....:) The 12 marker test is $99.00 plus
$2.00 postage when you send it back in with the sample...
What does P.B. stand for?
Best way to see if you fit into any of the current DNA groups is with
the DNA testing....
I for one would sure like to know....:)

Genealogy -- why...
We are the chosen. My feeling is that in each family there is one who
seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and
make them live again. To tell the family story and to feel that somehow
those who went before know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a
cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have
gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one.
We have been called as it were in our genes. Those who have gone before
cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do.
In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I
stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I
told my ancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of
us." ? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow
there was love there for me? I cannot say.
It goes beyond just documenting the facts. It goes to who I am, and why
I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost
forever to weeds and indifference, and saying I can't let this happen.
The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to
doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were
able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes
to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or
giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their
family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a
nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were
doing it for us, that we might be born who we are, that we might
remember them. So we do.
With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because
we are them and they are us. I tell the story of my family. It is up to
that one called in the next generation, to answer the call and take
their place in the long line of family storytellers. That is why I do
my family genealogy, and that is what calls those, young and old, to
step up and put flesh on the bones.

I just rejoined. I saw this on the DNA MOST WANTED
Elijah Baxton Coats b 1870 Catahoula Parrish, Louisana died in TX, son of George Washington Coats, son of Morgan Coats.
Note:
My gr. gr. gr. grandfather (Simeon B. Thomas) signed the marriage lic. and witnessed that they were over 21 yrs. of age. If I am not Mistaken Morgan Coats married Sophia RAWLINGS. This was a grandaughter or Great-grandaughter of My Elijah Coats and Elenor Hickman.
Their daughter Elizabeth Coates married Benjamin RAWLINS/Rawlings.
Elizabeth and Benjamin Rawlins had a son George Washington Rawlins.
My Austin Coates daughter was named Martha Washington Coates.
I know we are related to Morgan Coates some how other than the Rawlings.
I believe this Morgan Coats is related to Elijah Coats .
My gr. gr. gr.grandfather Simeon B. Thomas daughter (Martha Adeline THOMAS )(m) 2 of Austin Coates sons; first Charles Austin Marion Coates and 2nd William Elijah Coates.
Charles Austin Marion Coates is my gr. gr. grandfather.
Is anyone related to Morgan's group?

I hope you don't mind if I jump into the middle of this discussion, but I
need clarification on Morgan's (Coats) residence. He may have been in
Jackson County, but in 1830 he was in Jasper County GA next door to widow,
Jane Coats. A John Coats lived nearby. Did he go to Jackson later? All three
of these Coats families were indexed to Jackson in 1830, but the person who
compiled the index made a mistake. Jasper County follows Jackson on the same
roll of film, and pages 368 and 369 fall into Jasper, not Jackson.
I have been searching Jasper for my Wilson Coats, b. ca 1811 in SC. He
married Susan Pryor in 1830 in Jasper County. They soon moved to Pike County
and had six children, but only one son named William B. Coats, born ca 1845.
Both Jane and John Coats, above, were old enough to be his parents, but I
can't break the barrier to get there. Morgan, b. ca 1802, was the age of a
sibling. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

First found on census 1830 Jasper co. Georgia
Jane Coats was on 1830 census one house before Morgan C. We
found Jane Coats listed in Land Lottery Records as widow of Kinsey Coats and
maiden name was Turner. Do not know what if any connection to Morgan C.
George Head was house listed after Morgan on 1830 census.
Morgan Coats, John Coats and George Head were listed as

1840 Morgan C. on Lauderdale co. MS. Census.
1838 Morgan and Sophia Coats were listed as charter members
Fellowship Baptist Church (Bailey) Merdian MS. George and Elizabeth Head
and Susan Coats also listed as charter members. Morgan and George H. were
made Deacons. We do not know what their connection is.
See names of children listed above.
1850 Morgan C. and children on Catahoula Parish Lousania census but no wife
listed.
1849 Mortality Schedule for "

1851 Morgan Married Sophia Rawllings. Apparently 1st and 2nd wife were
named Sophia.
Several Baptist Church records list Morgan C. as Deacon.
Also several Land / Deed records on Morgan found in
Catahoula
P. LA.
1860 Morgan on Catahoula P. census for LA.
We think Morgan died 1863 from info in Pine Grove Baptist
Church Minutes. Not sure where he is buried.
Morgans son George Washington Coats and his family left
LA. For Texas about 1875.
They eventuly settled in Keechi Leon Co. TX and bought
land in 1885 that is still in our family today.(2002)
We have no info on Morgan Coats prior to 1830 other than
fron census records showing he was born in SC.

Columbia County Court records list heirs of James Coats in 1795 as:
Elizabeth Coats Watson (husband Thomas Watson), Eady Ray (husband Benjamin
Ray), Melly Watson (husband Joseph Watson), Mary Coats, John Coats of
Newberry Co, SC and Rebeckah Watson (husband Benjamin Watson).
Were these Coats women from Newberry Co, SC? These marriages were not
located in GA. Did they occur in SC during the early years of the Revolution
when Quakers left Wrightsboro, some for Ohio, some for SC and some for
Savannah (temporarily)?

Folks, I'd like to remind you that I don't give out any info on the
DNA results...if you wish to share other information with others,
other than the DNA results that is up to you...
Even if you paid for someone elses tests, that DNA info is theirs and
they are the only ones that have access to their info....
So although I'd really like to help in your search, the only thing
about the DNA tests you'll get from me are the results which are
posted either in the Coats Archive or at the FTDNA website...that's
all you really need anyway....
Also, a good way to help others doing research, on your set up page
you can list your earliest documented ancestors yourself now, you can
also put in map coordinates, I don't know, I haven't figured out the
benefit of that yet....and you can also add a ged file to your pages,
this file is only available to others that show up in your matches, so
this is not a public file, but it would surely help others doing
research in your group....
So just another reminder to visit your home page at FTDNA and take
advantage of some of their new little *tools* for us....:)

Hi list,
the above site has recently been updated with various records
covering Settlement,Bastardy,Apprentice,Removal etc.
Derbyshire based it contains many names of folks from other counties who
for one reason or another had a connection ,however tenuous with
Derbyshire.
It may be you have no Derbyshire connections, I expect most of you will not
have, however a lot of you will have English ancestors and the above site
will give you an idea of just what may be found in certain documents in
English Record Offices.
And you never know what you may find.
It may just be your lost Uncle Jack is here. !

Hi Charlotte
There was a William Coats that sold land to the Palmer family in 1771,
according to the Palmer Genealogy.
Also Zipporah Palmer b 1757 m a Coats, and the first child was William.
When I pulled up the Coats listings on the cemetary database at NEHGS all
were listed in Ledyard, New London, CT.
This might help,
Bonnie
Dear List; I got from another list that if you do 59 markers, and they
all match, then your most recent common ancestor is your
ggg-grandfather. However, only if all the people who match at 37
markers do the test could you get a definitive result. I know this is
clumsily worded, but does anyone think it is worth it to upgrade? If the
rest in my group will do it, I will. It would give us a workable time
line to find the common ancestor.
John
John, I was planning on seeing if my cousin would let me upgrade his
to the 59 marker...if nothing else so it will give us a complete base
line so to speak...
So yes, I will do it....:)
