The following is a description of a house in Ladysmith, Virginia at the
intersection of Routes 1 and 639:
Woodlawn, a frame, 2-story house, seven rooms, was built c. 1750, located 1 ½
miles north of Ladysmith on Rt. 1. In 1832, as addition was put on the house.
Owners:
the builder William COATES,
Archie Beazley & Charles Oliver,
William Blackwell (1918),
Middletin Hans (1930) owner & occupant in 1937
William COATES came here as a teacher from Scotland. His sister and housekeeper
were murdered in the house, & a colored boy was wounded. Three men from outside
the community believed that Coates had money in the house, and the motive for
the murders was robbery. The murderers were apprehended, two being hanged in
Bowling Green, and the third was freed, having turned Statess witness.
James COATS is listed as the owner of lot 20 in Port Royal in 1787. The
earliest owner of this lot was Patrick Mitchell, immigrant from Glasgow (1744),
then Joseph Wood (1787), James COATS (1787), and Nancy Apperson (1788).
Source People, Postoffices and Communities in Caroline County, Virginia 1727
1969, by Rev. Ralph Emmett Fall, c. 1989, W. H. Wolfe Associates, Roswell GA
The same book also includes a list of names and dates of debtors from the
ledger book of the store, John Hoomes & Co. in the Milford Community. One of
the names listed is:
James COATS (1790).

You can now add your GED files to your FTDNA home page, so that those
who match with you can see your family line via your Y DNA results...
There is also a set up page, so you can add your earliest documented
ancestor to your kit number for the Coats project public page...
FTDNA also has added coloring for groups and grouping abilities for
their public pages...
Check it out....:)
We've also had two new kits returned and we're waiting for the
results...probably back in April...

I received a couple of Persi Articles that are most interesting...
The first is an Article out of the Journal of the West: Frost - Coats
Feud Mendocino County, CA
http://www.coatsarchive.us/californ.htm
The other is another Coats family in the Indian Territory...this I
think is the William and Sarah Coats buried in the Welch Cemetery...as
far as I know, they are not related to my Coats line...but this is the
Dawes Roll records for William Coats, his wife was named Sarah,
deceased at the time of enrollment and it names his father as McKinzie
Coats and mother as Annie Coats...
http://www.coatsarchive.us/oklahomadoc.html
I got a lot of these Articles and I'm putting them in the archive as
rapdily as I can...quite a few Bible records...etc...

I've added a record showing that Mrs. Susanna, mother of, William
Coate, departed this life on, the 18th of August 1834, in the 82 year
of her, age
This would give her a birth date of c 1752 and so I'm thinking Little
John probably had a birth date closer to c 1750...
These records are transcriptions of inscriptions from the *Old
Clarkesville Cemetery* located about six miles west of Grove Hill,
Clarke County, AL...
They include Susanna, William, Sophia Fluker and Hardy Fluker

Subject: Providence Williams
Date: Tue, 21 Feb 2006 13:35:03 -0600
Hello:
My name is Tina Williams Swyers from Independence, Kansas.
I have been researching your site last night and this morning.
Our Providence Williams, father of Abigail is on your site.
Abigail married her cousin Josiah Williams b ca 1764 or later and died April
9, 1865 in Hickman Co., Kentucky. Then he married Mary Polly Tweedle
Williams.
My Great Great Grandfather, Isaac "Ike" Williams was their son.
I am working with an 86 year old descendent from Colorado (Mary Stansbury
Williams) and another descendent from Massachusettes (Paula Marcus).
Mary's descendent was her grandmother, Ann Robinson Williams, daughter of
Josiah Williams and 2nd wife Mary Polly Tweedle Williams, Isaac "Ike"
Williams' sister. Paula's descendent is Josiah A. Williams, her Great Great
Grandfather, and brother to my Isaac "Ike" Williams.
We are trying to find out if Providence's father was James Williams. Do you
have any more information on Providence Williams?
Here is what Mary asked me to relate to you:
She may know who the father of Providence was. I think it was surely a man
named JAMES 1.
Now whether James 1 was the son or brother of Providence 1 is the big
problem.
Now let me state what I know.
Providence 1 was in South Carolina in 1765 when he gave a Power of Attorney
to
" my brother Richard Williams" to sell certain land in Frederick Co Va (now
Hampshire Co. WVA). A JAMES WILLIAMS was the first Witness. James Williams
also swore in court to the truthfulness of the POW etc.
Then when our Daniel Williams obtained his Royal Land Grant in SC in 1771
his land was bordered by JAMES WILLIAMS, JOHN WILLIAMS, John Caldwell and
William Biggs and Vacant lands.
We still are not sure the relationships of John, James, and Providence 1 and
Providence 2. I am hoping maybe you will be able to help us.
Oh yes one more important item:
James 1 died and did not leave a will. His eldest son James 2 deeded some
land to Providence 2
sighting "to my brother Providence Williams"
So that would mean James 1 was the father of James 2 and Providence Williams
2.
But what was the relationship between James 1 and Providence 1?
Hope your e-mail works. Also, I thought I saw a Coats/Williams connection,
but can't find it.
Tina

Thanks Carol, most interesting...there is more info on this line in
the Coats Archive:
http://www.coatsarchive.us/docsal.html
And I'm sure Linda has more info on the lines further down as well...
This William, also according to another article is the brother of
Marmaduke Coate, the surveyor from SC....and their sister Lucinda
Coate Miller who moved to AL from Georgia...I think Linda and the
records have here as Hannah...anyway, they all three end up in Clarke
County AL...
Now this John A. Coate, I wonder if he might be the one that shows up
in Morango County AL and then goes into Greene County AL as well...we
just don't know enough about him as of yet...we also don't know where
in GA Lucinda came from....
Also Susannah Coate, would have been the mother of this William, she
married a Dixon after Little John died, that found in the SC
records...so if she came to AL with William that would mean Mr. Dixon
had died...
So, that's what we know....I'm going to put this in a text file and
add it to the archive as well....this is really an early date 1879....
