I found a couple of deeds in Edgefield Co. S.C. that mentions a John Coats.
I'm not sure if it is the same John Coats you are looking for but I'll send
you what it says.
The interesting thing is it mentions Ezekiel Walker, brother of my Rev.
Francis Walker of Edgefield Co. The name is shown as Ezeual instead of
Ezekiel.
Ezekiel Walker married Mary Fluker, daughter of George Fluker and sister to
Hardy Fluker referred to in the deads.
Edgefield Co. S.C. Deed Book 31, pg. 302 29 Jan 1814.
Thomas Dixon, Susannah Dixon, Henry Coates, Marmeduke Coate, Joel Bell &
Nancy Bell all of Newberry Dist. and Edgefield to Hardy Fluker, for four
hundred
dollars, 180 acres on Clouds Creek of Saluda River adj lands of Marmeduke
Coate, George Fluker, Smith, Benjamin Carley, Eathridge and Joseph West
originally
surveyed for Cattlet Corley 29 Nov 1788, conveyed by said Catlet Corley to
heirs of little JOHN COATE 15 Oct 1803.
Then on page 104 Volume 32 Oct 1814, Hardy Fluker sold to William Fluker the
same land adj lands of Marmaduke Coate----land originally surveyed for
Cattlet
Corley 29 Nov 1788, conveyed by him to heirs of little JOHN COATE 15 Oct
1803.
Volume 35, pg. 472 26 Dec 1809
John Blalock, Rachel Park and Mary King lawful heirs of estate of John
Blalock Sr. to John Pope, 110 acres on Big and Burnetts originally granted
Arthur H.
Davis, adj lands -----estate of JOHN COATS.
You may already have these but I thought I would mention them in case you
didn't have them. Apparantly this John Coats or "little John Coates" died
before
1803 when it states "heirs of".
Hope this helps. Norma

Subject: My Coats ancestors traced back to New Jersey
Date: Sun, 30 May 2004 08:19:53 -0400
My paternal grandmother was born Vera Coats, daughter of John James (born in
Dunn County Wisconsin) who was son of Joseph Coats (middle name not known)
who was born in New York, son of Joseph Henry Coats, born in New York and
his parents were both born in New Jersey.
I'm having difficulty finding Joseph Henry's birth information; all that I
know currently is that he was born in 1825 in New York state. I have found
a Joseph Coats in Avon New York in 1820 (might be his father) and a group of
Coats males with names beginning with 'J'. There is a John and a James and
with my great-grandfather being a "John James", it's possible that his
father named him after his favorite relatives; possibly his uncles.
I know from what my father has told me that our Coats ancestors were
Scottish. I did find where Coats is a sept of Clan Farquaharson. I'm
looking into what the exact relationship was.
Anyway, I wonder if our Coats ancestors were related?

I am doing research on Samuel Kendall of Newberry District, SC. Samuel
married a woman named Sarah from Newberry about 1808. Do you have any info
as to
which Kendall your Sara Coate married? Samuel and Sarah moved to Dallas
County Alabama. According to Sarah A. Coate will of 1838 it appears her
daughter
Sarah Kendall had moved away. I would very much like to share info.
Marmaduke Coate surveyed 206 acres of land on Pattersons Creek for Samuel
Kendall.

Well this is indeed sad, about two years ago you could order individual
reels of microfilm for about $10.00 each...now, they charge $40.00 and will
scan it for you and put it on line for only about a year I think it
said...interesting, they don't say anything about if you order a film that
someone else has already ordered and they already have scanned....:)

You are most welcome. I sure wish someone out there had information on my
John Gore, b. 1805 S.C. I have searched, researched, got help from other
Gore
descendants and nothing shows up. Most of the Gores in S.C. have been
accounted for and there is little more I can do.
John shows up for the first time in 1826 Bibb County, AL when he married
Sarah Whatley. I can trace him as far as 1850 in Claiborne Parish, LA. He
died
between 1850 and 1860 (somewhere between La & Tx). His widow Sarah Whatley
Gore shows up on the 1860 Henderson Co., TX census with her unmarried
children,
among which is my great grandfather John Henry Gore.
As far as I know he went from S.C. to AL; however, it is possible he did
stop
off in GA. There are a number of Gores in GA between 1805 and 1826 but most
of them have been accounted for too.
I will continue looking for the name Coats (Coates) and if I find anything
on
your William Coats or the Baker family that I believe might be of interest,
I
will let you know.
