This was an E-mail I sent Justin last night and thought it may be of interest to our Coates list .
Sorry it is so long but, you will see the importants of the length . I hope it helps us .
Justin,
In Roots and Twigs by Helen J. Wise
She states on page 389 (Outline of Coates family History ) that in 1934 Coke
Lynn Coates ?? wrote that Dr. Winson Coates stated that the Coates line had
been traced back to a Sir Archibald Coates but we have no proof of this.
The book goes on to say-
Most of the early history to the time of Pollard Hickman Coates 1st came
from Mrs. Daysiall Day Brister. Tutwiler, Mississippi, July of 1982 .
NOTE: Justin have you ever heard of this lady?
It was given to Floy Friend Hume who passed it to me ,Helen Japson Wise.
One of her sources was "The Mecklenburg Signers and their Neighbors" by
Worth S. Ray
NOTE: I went to the library and found the above book and their is no
information about any Coates,Coats or any other spelling in this book. There
is however on page 435 SAMUEL HICKMAN and MARGARET THOMPSON .
NOTE the next, lines of Helen Wise's book:
The book (Roots and Twigs ) continues:Still page 389
The Father of the first Pollard Hickman Coates was Elijah Coates. We have no
information on Elijah Coates parents.
The mother of Pollard Hickman Coates 1st was Helena Hickman Coates. They
possibly lived and died in Wilkinson County,Mississippi. (WE NOW KNOW WHERE THE NAME HICKMAN ORIGIONATED.)
She later states there is no proof of Elijah Coates father of Pollard.
Roots and twigs continues....
Helena Hickman's line goes back to Col. JAMES PATTON, who was born in
Ireland and died 1755 in the United States, possibly in Augusta County,
Virginia. His will was probated there in 1769. He is said to have died on
the way to "Drapers" from an Indian arrow.
Page 390 (Roots and Twigs)
MARY PATTON ,his daughter ,married WILLIAM THOMPSON. Their daughter,MARGARET
THOMPSON married SAMUEL HICKMAN. We have no names or dates for these
ancestors. (NOTE: This is not true :in the book "The Mecklenburg Signers and
their Neighbors" by Worth S. Ray these families are documented on page 435.
MARGARET THOMPSON and SAMUEL HICKMAN 'S son JOHN HICKMAN,SR. was a Revolutionary Soldier, being a Motross in Capt. James Mitchell's company
South Carolina.,Regt. of Artillary,established September 1,1778,where he
served until May 1780.
John Hickman, Sr. died in Orange County, South Carolina. The will was
probated in 1811.
John Hickman,Sr married Elizabeth Bright the daughter of Sara and Caleb
Bright.
John Hickman,Sr. and Elizabeth Bright were parents of Helena Hickman.
NOTE: This I found interesting.
Page 390 Roots and Twigs
Helena Hickman married Elija Coates and they were parents of of Pollard
Hickman Coates 1st who was born May 13,1794 in South Carolina or (PENNSYLVANIA) and
died in Mississippi 1845.
Justin, Where did PENNSYLVANIA come from?? and notice the different spelling
of ELIJA COATES . (It could just be a typo) Had she found something to make
her believe they were in Pennsylvania during this time??
There is absolutely NO documentation for any of the Coates until, Pollard
Hickman Coates sons were grown and began to write letters.
I went to all the sources she gave for Coates and the information that is
referenced is not in the sources.
Mrs. Wise states that all early Coates family information had been distroyed
or lost.
Anyway, I can send you this info about the Hickman's by snail mail or E-mail. I'll
scan it in the morning it is almost midnight so I'd better hit the sack
tonight if I plan to get up in the morning.
I hope this helps you . It was the best way to explain who Samuel Hickman
was and give you a little of the insight to the book
.
Goodnight,
Robbie

The William Coats who moved from Rowan to Lincoln County was said to have lived
to over a hundred. All of my known direct Coats ancestors have lived well into
their 70s with several in their 80s. I would really like to get a DNA participant
from this fellows line.

FYI, in South Carolina you could own land as early as 15 years of age...and
after that point the head of the house hold could not get 50 acres of land
under the headright rules, so in those cases they probably got the land in
the name of the older children...there are quite a few single women in South
Carolina that owned land in their own names and I suspect it was gotten by
their fathers....:)

I'm away from my notes, so I don't have any dates with me (other than what
my very imperfect memory can provide). So what I say must be taken with
that warning.
Elenor was granted land by SC in her own right in 1785. That makes me
think she must have been a widow of some (as yet unknown) Hickman.
But let's consider the possibilities. If she was at least 18 when she was
granted the land, that puts her birth no later than 1773. John Hickman
was old enough to serve in the Revolution in 1775, so he may have been old
enough to father Elenor in 1773. Seems odd, though, for a young unmarried
daughter to have land granted to her by the state directly, rather than
having the land granted to the father then the father deeding it to the
daughter.

I was looking at some documents today and a new scenario came to mind.
Elenor Hickman could have been a daughter of John Hickman from a "FIRST" marriage .
In several cases in my Coates family I have seen where land was given to a child or children from a first marriage before the father died. To assure they get their mothers share.
I believe this is the most likely scenario??
Anyone have any input on this idea??

DIDN'T KNOW HIM, BUT SURE WISH I HAD!!
America's Oldest Man Dies at Age 114
CLINTON, Md. (Feb. 25) - William Coates was a ladies' man to the end.
Coates,
believed to be America's oldest man, died Monday at age 114 with two of his
children and a granddaughter at his side.
Even at the age of 110, Coates was still charming the ladies during Prince
George's annual celebration of centenarians.
''He really lit up every single party and event that we had for the
seniors,'' said Irving Smith, director of the Evelyn Cole Senior Center in
Seat
Pleasant, who has done extensive research on centenarians.
Coates was born June 2, 1889, and according to Smith, he was the oldest man
in America. At one time he was believed to be the second-oldest man in the
world, although he didn't have a birth certificate to prove it.
''It really was a blessing that my father lived so long,'' said daughter
Maxine Coates. ''He enjoyed life and being with his family.''
William Coates worked on a commercial tobacco farm until he got a job
building roads for the state of Maryland.
He had nine children, 21 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Thank Justin for all your insite on the Citations.
Boy, this just confirms all these people lived very close and were most
likely all related.
I truely believe Josee Coates is Helena Hickman's husband and more than
likely Elijah Coates brother.
Some of the SC Hickmans in Wilkinson County, Ms. around 1820 moved to St.
Helena Parish,LA about the time Eijah P. Coates shows up as Justice of the
Peace in St. Helena Parish,LA.
I am still working trying to find out more about these people.
What do you think?

I also have looked at this plat which Robbie has given the citation to. I
didn't make a sketch of this one, like I did for Josee Coates' grant.
But the plat shows a tract, and the following adjacent lands: "Land laid
out for John Hickman," vacant, "Land liad out for Peter Graham," "Land
laid out for James Graham," "Land laid out for Nath'l Walker".
While this tract is obviously very near Josee Coates' tract, it must not
be adjacent to it, since his tract, which was laid out 6 months after this
one, does not mention this one.
The 640 acre tract of John Hickman, dated 10 Aug 1785 (i.e. 6 months
before Helena and a year before Josee), mentions Baygall Branch, and the
only landowner mentioned is "Graham's land". [State Plats, vol 6, p49]
In Vol 19, p34, there is a plat for Michael Zeigler, dated 30 Dec 1785,
for 652a, on Baygall Branch on S side of S Edisto, and on the wagon road
from Kellys Cowpen to Charleston; adjacent lands are: "Lands run for John
Hickman" (the road goes onto this land); vacant; "Lands run for Samuel
Felder"; and the S. Edisto R.
In Vol 33, p19, there is a plat for Peter Grayham, for 48a surveyed 28 Aug
1794, on the road from Kellys Cowpen to Chas'ton; the bounds are: S.
Edisto R.; "Run for Jno Hickman;" "run for Dominick Graham [illegible
word: Deceased?]"; "run for sd Peter Graham"; "run for Levin Roten". dated
3 Dec 1794
In Vol 38, p639, there is a plat for James Ward, for 500a, in Barnwell
Dist; on Halfmoon Branch of Leman's Swamp, 10 Mar 1802, adjacent: Gaspar
Trotti, Nathaniel Walker, Jno Hykman, John Hickman, "Land laid out",
Thomas Draper, and Henry Days.
In Vol 39, p206, there is a plat for William Blitchenden, for 1000a,
surveyed 17 Dec 1802, in Barnwell Dist, between Edisto R and Little
Saltcatchers; 17 Feb 1803; adjacent: John Hykman, Elijah Coates, Peter
Grayham, Abraham Tylor [there is a mark "Tylor House" in his region],
Moses Tylor, Reuben Tailor [?]; Owner Unknown; Gasper Trotti, James Ward,
and Porters Land.
In Vol 44, p189, there is a plat for Joseph Sandefer, for 81a, surveyed 2
Apr 1816, in Barnell Dist on waters of Lemons Swamp; adjacent: John
Johnsons land; John Simmons Land; Estate of John Hickmans land; John
Volantines land. Dated 2 May 1816.
The names Tyler and Trotti are mentioned in John Hickman's will (which, of
course, mentions his daughter Helena Coates and grandchildren Pollard
Coates and Emilia Coates).

The citation Robbie gives refers to the the SC State Plat Books (for state
land grants). The plat gives a little map of the tract. Josee Coates'
tract for 540 acres, dated 12 Aug 1786 has the following-- I hope I can
describe this well enough:
Along the bottom is the "So Edisto R" running left and right.
On the left running upward and angled slightly left is a straight boundary line with
the notation "SW 27:60:00"-- I interpret this as South 27 degrees West,
length 60 chains, 0 links in surveyor's lingo.
At the end of this side,
there is a corner, and a horizontal line goes off to the right "NW
63:80:00" above this line is labelled "John Hickman's Land"
On the right end of the horizontal line, there is a corner, and a line
goes off upward angling slightly to the left "SW 30:4:6". At its upper
end is another corner.
From this corner, another horizontal line goes to the right "NW
45[degrees]:35:00. Above this line and wrapping around the corner on its
right end is the label "Peter Grahams Land".
From the corner on the right end of this horinzontal line, the remaining
side heads downward angling to the left "NE 50[degrees]:78:00" joining the
"So Edisto R" to the right of where the first line left it.
The tract is roughly rectangular with a small trapezoid attached to its
upper right. Along the river, in the lower right portion of the tract--
occupying at least half of it-- is a region labelled "Impassable Swamp".

There was another famous Thomas Hart Benton. He was an American painter and
the grandnephew of Sen. Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975).
My old World Almanac is my source for his dates.
The identification as a grandnephew is from The Columbia Encyclopedia.
