Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Well, a little early....:)
But wishing you all the best for the New Year, including finding all those
Ancestors!!
The Archive is slow going up for two reasons....1. apparently pdf files set
off all the bells and sirens at the server end...so I'm converting and
re-linking as I go...the pdf files up now will remain except for SC Newberry
page 2...I'm converting all those to jpg format as well as the rest of the
Archive pages....2. There's just a lot of info there....:)
So here's hoping this is *Ancestor Found Year*....:)

Does anyone know who this fellow is?
Civil War, 11th Battalion LA Infantry - DeSoto & Various Parishes, Louisiana
JAMES T. COATS, Pvt./Cpl., Co. A, enlisted 3 May 1862 at
Mansfield, LA, born Wake Co. NC, age 36, blue eyes, dark hair,
dark complexion, occupation stage driver & was 5' 8" tall.
(enlistment paper says he enlisted 31 Jul 1862 at Monroe, LA &
his name was James C. Coats)
Note* Monroe Ouachita Parish,LA
The time discrepancy here might be able to be accounted for. The murder
trial took place in March of 1807 as far as I know... but that might not
have been the time when James was tried as there were 2 persons being tried
from memory. When was the verdict handed down? Do newspapers at the time
show that James escaped after the verdict was read. What date is the 1808
document exactly? Maybe James left out of shame after being pilloried and
having the cotton case go badly.... but some more research is needed in
newspapers and court cases to figure out when he skipped town.
The interesting note is though that we have three persons now who believed
they were descended from Big John who are related to this Marmaduke Coate
group and each other. Two descend through William and one descends
through James.
The others who thought they were descended aren't yet related to other
tested Coates... Let's hope.

The problem with the theory of James Coats has one flaw...South Carolina
records show he was still in SC as late as 1808.
Wright Coate, James Coate, Jesse Coate, sue over delivery of some cotton,
1816
This is incorrectly listed as 1816 in the Coats Archive but the document
says 1808...
The John Coats married to Rachel only names sons James and Sampson in his
will....
Well, as pointed out to me by anther list member....those matching funds by
FTDNA can only be used $25.00 at a time for each new kit...so to use the
entire amount we have, we'd have to have 5 new kits ordered....and yes, all
before the 31st of Dec...

Subject: [ARCHIVES] New Blog For Archivists!!
Date: Sun, 12 Dec 2004 18:34:02 -0500
Id like to announce the start of a new blog called "DRIZZLE", available at
http://www.myunclesteve.com/drizzle. DRIZZLE features news stories and
commentary of interest to archivists, records managers and other
professionals. The point of DRIZZLE is not to include a comprehensive
listing of *all* news stories of interest, (you can read Peter K's RAIN
postings for that,) but rather to highlight a select few that are
particularly interesting and likely to provoke online discussion and debate.
Comments are accepted for all entries in the blog. As the blog is configured
now, I need to approve submitted comments before they are posted online, but
I am not wedded to this restriction and may well remove it soon.
In time, I am planning to ask a few DRIZZLE commentators and friends to join
me as co-authors of the blog. Co-authors would have the ability to post
entries to the blog as opposed to just comments. If you are interested in
becoming a co-author, start by submitting a few comments to the blog. Later
on, send me an email telling me about yourself and why you should be
empowered to become a DRIZZLE co-author.
Last but not least, I am also interested in hearing from others would like
to help with the administration and/or graphic design of the blog. If you
are familiar with Movable Types blogging software in particular, it would
be great to hear from you!
I hope to read your comments online! Please forward this announcement to
other lists and friends as you see fit.
Thanks,
Steve Butzel

"-- Matching Gift from Family Tree DNA: in conjunction with the launch of
the General Fund, Family Tree DNA will match dollar per dollar the
contributions to Surname Projects during the month of October, up to a
total of $200. There are 3 conditions for the use of FTDNA's matching
dollars:
a) no more than $25 that has come from FTDNA can be used per test,
b) FTDNA matching gift can be used only for new kits,
c) FTDNA contributions from the matching gift need to be used before the
end of this year, as they will expire on 12/31/04, whether used or not.
I have been in touch with a possible descendant of the Robert Coates of Lynn
Mass group...and have offered him a 12 Marker kit out of our fund...
I've not heard back from him yet....
Linda, how is that Joan Sissom group coming? any interest there?
Anyone else...remember if you're on this list and you're a male Coate,
Coates, Coats or other variation, please don't hesitate to join our DNA
project...if funds are a problem...let us know...we'll find a way to cover
it....12 Marker tests for us all is a first step and then we can go from
there....

This seems to indicate the FTDNA matching funds will expire 12/31/04
Do we have anyone on the list with a Coats male, that needs a first time
kit?
Char

b) Email juliew(a)familytreedna.com the Kit # and your instructions on how to
apply funds to it. For example: "Kit 12345 , apply $50 from donor and $25
from FTDNA", or "Kit 12345 , apply $25 from FTDNA", or "Kit 12345 , apply
$25 from donor". Of course, the values are only for example purposes - you
can use any amounts, as long as the contribution that comes from the FTDNA
matching gift is limited to $25 per kit. Remember the FTDNA matching gifts
expire on 12/31/04.
That looks like a real match. Unfortunately, I havent done much research on
the COATES side of the family yet. I do, however, have a guess.
The only close connection based on date would be with Benjamin Coates
(possibly Berry Chileton Coates) and Anna M. (possibly Anne Madrid Davis)
who were married, as the bible indicates, on December 5, 1847. This is a
stretch on the names but the handwriting and some of the names are a bit
different depending on who is writing and entry in the bible.
From the 1870 Marshall County (WV), Union District Census I found a Benjamin
(born about 1825) and Anna M. (born about 1829) who had six children: Robert
M., Emma M (married Edwards), John D., Allice M. (married Cotts), Anna G.
and Molly M. (married Brennen). Allice M. is my Great Grandmother. The
census indicates the Anna M. was born in Wales.
I know for a fact that an Anna M. died December 1913 at age 87 in Marshall
County but thats about all. Ive tried to find out more from Marshall
County but thats all they have. Note: these birthdays are off a couple
years.
Another possible hypothesis is that there really was a Berry Chileton Coates
(not Benjamin). He might be the brother of Benjamin.
I dont know if this helps at all. There are no other references to DAVIS in
the bible. For further research, you might check with the Ohio County (WV)
genealogical Society. The Family had its roots in Benwood, WV, right next to
Wheeling WV. Although Benwood and Wheeling are in different counties,
Wheeling (Ohio County) may be where newspaper reports were recorded.
Again, Im sorry I cant be more help right now. Let me know what you find
out and, as my research progresses, will let you know of any developments.
Good luck with your research.

The old site is now gone and the new site is at:
Coates, Coate, Coats Digital Archive:
http://www.coatsarchive.us
I understand you may or may not have to use the www. any longer...both seem
to work for me...
Not all the documents are up yet...it is a slow process uploading them...and
I'm trying to reduce the file size as much as possible...so you'll now see
one page per file rather than 2 or 10 pages per file...
Enjoy!
