AUSTIN - After 167 years of using paper indexes to find the names of
original land grantees, the Texas General Land Office has made them
available online.
The database is on the agency's Web site at
www.glo.state.tx.us/archives/landgrant.html
The new database allows anyone to access grants of land issued by the
governments of Spain, Mexico, and the Republic and state of Texas. A
multitude of search options can be used to locate land grants, such
as the name of an original grantee or patentee, the county where a
tract is located, file numbers, and county and abstract numbers.
The archives and records division is scanning documents in its scrap
file collection and converting them to PDF format for the database.
The land office suggests that the information will be of interest to
genealogists, title companies, petroleum landmen, historians,
academics and others.
A complete index to records in the Land Office's Spanish Archives and
Special Collection will be added later this year.
Commissioner Jerry Patterson said the online projects cut down on
paperwork and time, both for his staff and for researchers who had to
visit Austin to obtain the information. "It boosts our
productivity
and is far more convenient for the public," he said.

James Coats was born 1790 in Madison County, VA. He married Nancy Howell
in 1810 in Madison Co.. One of the weird things is that there are no other Howells in
Madison/Culpeper/Rappahannock that I can find! (plenty of Yowells, though!).
My suspicion is that he might be related to the Coates in Caroline County,
but, this is purely speculation. They had 12 children.
He was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving in Captain Joseph Hume's
Company, 1st Regiment Virginia Militia for 6 months. For this service he
received a land bounty and pension for his wife, Nancy. At least 2 of his
sons were Civil War Veterans: Henry Stapleton Coates (my gg grandfather),
5th and 6th VA Cavalry, Co. F and Fountain Coates who served in a Madison
regiment. All of this info is from the National Archives. Henry would have
seen action in most of the major battles of the Civil War, being in the VA
5th Cavalry.
My theory is that the original bounty land was sold and the sons got the
proceeds. Henry S. Coates used it to purchase land in Culpeper Co., VA.
This property is now historic (at least in Culpeper) and is known as the
'Coates Ranch'. Oscar Coates, son of Henry, willed that Lena Legge, his
black housekeeper, could live in the house rent-free for the remainder of
her natural life which went into the 1980s. I have a copy of the will.
Any way, all of the Coats/Coates in Madison/Culpeper/Rappahannock counties
are related as far as I can see, so, any info about any of them would
probably be useful. Here's the info on the original James Coats from
the FamilySearch site:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/AF/family_group_record.asp?familyi...
As for the DNA, unfortunately, those closest to me are gone. My mother, Ann
Elizabeth Coates, just passed last month, and her only brother died in the
1980s. I am making new contacts in Culpeper, however, and there seem to be
plenty of male Coates ther that are more than likely related.

I would venture to guess that most of the southern Coats/Coates are
descended from the ones that first landed in Virginia...
BTW, still trying to find out where James Coats and the Coates/Coats of
Madison/Culpeper/Rappahannock counties in VA came from - anybody know
anything about the Coats/Coates from this area. I've gotten as far back as
1790 with the birth of James Coats in Madison Co., VA., a veteran of the War

To Coats group manager,
Family Tree DNA will start a study in an attempt to redefine the mutations
rates of our 12 and 25 marker Y-DNA tests. Clearly all of us will benefit
from the results of the project!
As such, to be able to participate in the project the coordinator will
need to sign a release form on behalf of its members, allowing us to use
the genealogical data to authenticate the number of generations between
your members as we compare actual mutations to the number of actual
transmission events.
While your project will not get a gold foil stamped report upon
completion, (which we plan to happen in about 10 months) you will get more
accurate and therefore more reliable data that you will be able to use in
your genealogy project. The resulting numbers will be used among other
things - to adjust those currently provided here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/faq2.html
Please see the formal request from the lab here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/mutation_study.html
If you are interested in woworking with us on this project, please view,
print sign and mail a hardcopy of the Group Release Form to our
representative.

You know, people who might have been Coats but adopted could also do our DNA
test...
I.e. young mother is left a widow, with small children, she remarries and
they take the name of her second husband...that's possible...
So DNA testing would be of great benefit to those folks as well...
And another reminder that if you have a Coats surname and are male or if you
are female and have a Coats male cousin...
Please consider taking the DNA test...it is indeed amazing....:)

WILLIS - ROUGH - COATS
Hey to the lists...
I'm hoping someone out there can either help me with information or point me
in the right direction:
I descend from Alexander WILLIS and Elizabeth ROUGH, who were married in
Davidson Co., NC, on December 4, 1840. He was the son of James WILLIS, b.
1786,
Rowan Co, NC, and Martha Patsy COATS, b. abt 1782, in NC. James & Patsy
were
married Dec. 17, 1804, in Rowan Co., NC. I do not know the Christian name of
Elizabeth ROUGH's father and her mother's name may have been Mary C. KEPLEY.
James WILLIS was the son of George WILLIS (1757-1834) and Margorie (?), and
the grandson of Thomas WILLIS (1734-1794, and Ann.
Any help on filling in these blanks and/or pushing back another gneration or
two on any of the lines will be greatly appreciated.
