Gale,
Thanks for that info, its interesting to note, 2 Family names that have
significance in the Bowling and Baker families. Murrell ( who later came to
Owsley County) its suspected that Rev. Thomas Murrell is in fact the son of
Rev. Jesse Bowling, and Canady, this is the Middle name that Elisha Harrison
and John Bakers' daughter Ifgha named their first male child, William Canady
Harrison. We are throwing the idea around of scheduling some research
trips and Wilkes county North Carolina and Lee County Virginia are our 2
choices. I think it would be fun to get a group together to go!
Thanks for the info, the mystery continues!
Gwen, I have ordered the 25 marker DNA test kit for Clyde Baker, have not
got it yet, but I am targeting Sept 2 to send the actual DNA in.

John Coats Sarah Wright line
Found the following in the book A Standard History of Kansas & Kansans by
Wm. Connelley, Sec. of Kansas State Historical Society, and Topeka. Lewis
Pub. Co. 1918. A biography of Simon Coats, great grandson of John & Sarah
Coats. Note: he states John Coats was born in Pennsylvania. I am from
this line of Coats (John & Rachel) and have always felt something wasnt
right, but unable to pin it down. My own family oral history has never made
mention of South Carolina, and has the family moving from Pennsylvania
directly to Ohio. Correspondence with other researchers from this line,
some also have the same oral history, and we are still wondering where South
Carolina came into the picture. DNA testing has also thrown some question
into the picture, for our line (Big John & Rachel) doesnt seem to be
related to the other Coats in Bush River, S.C. I know everything is well
documented, but still harbor some doubts. Any comments? Lynn Roth

SIMON COATS. Among the men who are representing Wilson County in positions
of public importance, none have a better record for clean and capable
service than has Simon Coats, sheriff, who has held his present position
since January, 1915, but who has been connected with the sheriffs office
since 1911. He has been a resident of Wilson County for more than
forty-five years, during which time he has been identified with farming,
stock raising and business ventures, and is well and widely known to people
of this community as an honorable man of business and an official possessed
of the courage and the ability to discharge well the duties of any office to
which he may be elected.
Sheriff Coats was born in Randolph County, Indiana, June 30, 1860, and is
the son of Daniel and Mary (Snyder) Coats, and a member of a Welsh family
that was founded in the United States prior to the Revolution, when the
first of the name located in Pennsylvania. The great-grandfather of Simon
Coats was John Coats, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1872. From that state
he went to Ohio, and when he took up Government land in Indiana and became a
pioneer of the family in that state, he was compelled to freight his
supplies into the wilderness of Randolph County, where his new home was
located. He was one of the sturdy type of pioneers, fearless, self reliant
and resourceful, and a sample of the type of men who blazed the way for
civilization. From the heavy virgin timber he hewed himself a farm, and
what had been a deep and almost impenetrable forest became under his hand a
prosperous and productive farming country. He passed the remainder of his
life on this farm, and died in 1874,
having reached the remarkable age of ninety-two years. Among his children
was the grandfather of Simon Coats, Isaac Coats, who was born in the
wilderness of Indiana in 1806, and there passed his entire life in
agricultural pursuits. He grew up to the hard life of the frontier,
developed into an industrious and substantial farmer, and a citizen who
assisted his community in many ways. He died in Randolph County in 1876.
Daniel Coats the father of Simon Coats, was born September 1836, in Randolph
County, Indiana, and grew up in the locality in which his father and
grandfather had passed their lives. As a young man he engaged in
agricultural pursuits, but the Civil War came on to interrupt his
activities, and in 1862 he enlisted in the Seventh Regiment, Indiana
Volunteer Cavalry, with which organization he served bravely in the Union
army until the close of the struggle. When he returned from the war, Mr.
Coats again engaged in farming in Indiana, but in 1873 brought his family to
Wilson County, Kansas and became a pioneer of the prairies. He purchased a
farm of eighty acres, but after two years removed to Greenwood County,
Kansas, then went to Burlington, Coffey County, and finally returned to
Wilson County, where his death occurred in January 1905. Throughout his
life Mr. Coats was a devout and consistent member of the New Light Christian
Church, and for many years traveled all over the
southeastern part of Kansas as a minister, or circuit rider, of that
faith. A short time prior to his death, he joined the Masonic fraternity,
at Chanute, and was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic at
Burlington. Mr. Coats married Miss Mary Ann Snyder, who was born in Preble
County, Ohio in 1837, and died in 1862, in Randolph County, Indiana. They
became parents of the following children: Simpson, who was engaged in
farming near Akin, Minnesota at the time of his death in 1912; Jasper, who
is engaged in farming in Wilson County; Simon, of this notice; Rawson, who
is engaged in farming in Wilson County. Daniel Coats was married to second
to Mary Ann Hiatt, who was born in Indiana and died in Wilson Count, Kansas
in 1913, and they had three children: Ella who married Andrew Hull, a
resident of Thayer, Kansas; Martha who is the wife of John Babcock a farmer
of Rocky Ford, Colorado; and Roscoe who is a farmer of Wilson County.
Simon Coats attended the public schools of Union City, Indiana until he was
eleven years of age, and was reared on the farm of his uncle, Silas Coats,
his mother having died when he was two years of age. In 1871, he came with
his uncle to Kansas and located in Wilson County, where Silas Coats engaged
in farming on an eighty acre tract of land, a claim of Osage Indian land, on
which he filed and which he deeded. While residing on this farm, which he
still owns, Simon Coats finished his education in the rural schools of
Wilson County, and when the elder man died in 1884, took charge of the
property and conducted it until 1907. In that year he removed to the town
of Rest, in Wilson County, and there began shipping stock, a business in
which he was connected for four years, his cattle going to Kansas City
markets. In November 1911, Mr. Coats was appointed under sheriff of Wilson
County, under Sheriff J. E. Whiteside, and remained in that position until
succeeding the later in that
office in January 1915, an office to which he had been elected in the fall
of 1914. As has been stated Mr. Coats record has been an excellent one and
he has proven himself possessed of marked courage as well as high ability.
He was elected to the office in 1916 by a majority of 2,297 votes. Sheriff
Coats maintains offices in the Court House at Fredonia and in the new jail
building on Seventh Street, between Madison and Monroe streets, where he has
his residence. He is the owner of a dwelling on South Central Avenue, and
rents the old homestead place in Wilson County. Sheriff Coats is a stanch
republican, and was formerly township trustee of Pleasant Valley Township,
where the home farm is located from 1901 to 1905. He belongs to the
Methodist Episcopal Church. Fraternally, he is affiliated with Fredonia
Lodge No. 75, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was a charter member of
Altoona Lodge of this fraternity.
In 1898, at Fredonia, Sheriff Coats was united in marriage with Miss Mary E.
York, who was born in Wilson County, Kansas in 1871.

I haven't done any extensive search of the LCT court or probate records so I
can't really comment on that part. In the Rowan records we can tie 4 minor
children to Solomon and Tempy. When Solomon COATS died in 1806 John ADAMS
was given guardianship of his minor children; Sally, Tempy, Solomon and
James. Andrew MERREL gave bond of 70 pounds. Benjamin SIMPSON, George
WILLIS, Fredrick MILLER and one name
I cannot decipher laid out a years provision for his family. In the past we
have drawn the conclusion that since no Thomas was mentioned that he wasn't
one of the children. Are we reading too much into the guardianship record
above? Maybe 4 kids were all John Adams could handle. If Thomas was born in
1802 he would have been 4 years old when Solomon died. Is it possible that
Thomas's guardianship was given to someone else? Maybe John wasn't able to
handle such a young kid. Of course, we have no records to support this. Just
thinking out loud.

John may know more about this than I do, but as far as I know, the existing
probate records for LCT do not throw any light on this case as Solomon d.
back in Rowan Co. NC. And John has already ransacked the Rowan Co. records
repeatedly and thoroughly.

Don't know. LCT was trying to reorganize/inventory some of its records some
years ago; loose court papers might be in this category. John, do you have
any insight here?

John may know more about this than I do, but as far as I know, the existing
probate records for LCT do not throw any light on this case as Solomon d.
back in Rowan Co. NC. And John has already ransacked the Rowan Co. records
repeatedly and thoroughly.

Hi John,
To the best of my knowledge, this article is the ONLY source, outside of the
census records, that mentions the woman, who I take to be the
step-mother/aunt of Thomas Coates. Things would have been oh so much easier
had Goodspeed just added a bit more about her.
I am certain that the "widowed mother" has to be Tempy, widow of Solomon; no
one else fits, either in terms of age or status.

Oh, that explains it...but it says *sons of*...that sure sounds like
brothers...but the age difference is more like father and son...no wonder we
can't figure these out...:)

Not brothers...father and son. Lewis Coats was the father of Dr. J.C. Coats.

Subject: JUDGE ORDERS INTERIOR COMPUTERS CUT FROM INTERNET; CITES LACK OF
COOPERATION WITH COURT
Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 11:21:39 -0400 (EDT)
WASHINGTON, July 29 -- U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth has directed
the Interior Department to disconnect most of its computer systems from the
Internet, saying government officials have refused to provide the court with
assurances that hundreds of thousands of Indian Trust accounts are safe from
hackers.
The judge issued a preliminary injunction late Monday after a government
lawyer told him that the Interior Department was no longer willing to allow
a special master Lamberth appointed to continue to run "penetration" tests
of Interior's computers.
The judge's 35-page opinion and 5-page injunction expressly found that
the Indian plaintiffs in a lawsuit over the accounts are substantially
likely to prevail on the merits.
He also held that Interior Secretary Gale Norton should not do what she
did after he ordered a previous disconnection in December 2001. Norton then
failed to make payments to thousands of Indians who depend on trust payments
for their livelihood and shut off a popular public reservation system used
by the National Park Service.
In his order, the judge directed that all information systems controlled
by the department and its contractors which access individual Indian trust
data must be disconnected immediately. He exempted systems needed for
protection against fires and other threats to property from the cutoff.
"Under no circumstances, however, shall the Interior defendants exploit
or otherwise manipulate these circumstances and conditions to delay unduly
the prompt distribution to plaintiffs of their desperately-needed trust
funds," the judge added. "This court will view any such delay as a willful
breach of the fiduciary duty that the United States government owes to
individual Indian trust beneficiaries."
The judge's decision to issue the order came after a hearing at which he
was clearly exasperated over the government's unwillingness to cooperate
with continued testing of computer systems. The systems have been shown to
be largely devoid of firewalls and other security devices needed to protect
the security of the trust accounts from intruders. With the court's
approval, a computer expert was able to hack into the system about two years
ago and create an entirely new trust account without being detected.
"You tell me why I shouldn't shut down the entire Department of
Interior
computer system," the judge told government lawyers at the Monday morning
hearing.
The judge ruled that the Internet connection "constitutes further and
continuing irreparable injury" to the Indian plaintiffs. It also "provides
an opportunity for undetectable, unauthorized persons to access, alter or
destroy individual Indian trust data via an Internet connection," Lamberth
said. "The alteration or destruction of any of the trust data would further
prevent the beneficiaries of the individual Indian money trust from
receiving the payments to which they are entitled, in the correct amount."
Lawyers for a group of American Indians who have won orders for a
full
and complete accounting of funds the government holds in trust accounts had
asked for an order to allow testing of Interior's computer system's
continued vulnerability to hackers.
"It is business as usual for Secretary Norton, a trustee delegate
who
has been found unfit by the courts," said Dennis M. Gingold, the lead
attorney for the Indians. "The secretary has had 20 months to protect
critical trust information and segregate it from national parks, fish and
wildlife and homeland security information in Interior computers systems.
"But the secretary has done nothing but further expose the Individual Indian
Trust to further losses and corruption at the same time she has wasted tens
of millions of tax dollars."
"As a result of the secretary's incompetence, there is no integrity
in the entire trust program," he said. "We would have hoped this is the
least
that Secretary Norton would have done for the 500,000 Indians who depend on
her for the security of their trust funds."
"What is unconscionable is that the Justice Department in court
openly threatened to retaliate against many of the poorest people in this
country by withholding trust payments from the 500,000 individual Indian
trust beneficiaries. Justice also threatened to impair campground
reservations this summer for Americans on vacation if the court entered the
preliminary injunction against Secretary Norton. It is obvious that the
government is out of control."
After John Warshawsky, a Justice Department lawyer, told Lamberth
that the government believed it could no longer work cooperatively with the
court master, Alan Balaran, Lamberth said it will have to work directly with
him in the future.
"If you won't work with a special master, then you're going to have
to work with the court," Lamberth said, indicating he personally would take
direct charge of the issue.
At another point, Lamberth reminded the government lawyers, he had
offered them many opportunities to resolve the issue of Interior computer
security out of the courtroom, but they had rebuffed his efforts.
Warshawsky said they would appeal the judge's order to the court of
appeals.

This is actually before they show up in Halifax, VA. The first indication I
have that they are in Halifax, Va is in 1789.

These looks to be current land transfers. It says, " The information
contained in this database was produced from real estate records maintained
by the Commissioner of the Revenue of Lancaster County and reflects all
transfers through June 2002."
If it encompasses the beginning of Lancaster county to 2002, then this
Lewis would be in the right area that I have Revolutionary War pay warrents
and release papers. I need to check that. Thanks Char, Gup
