Char; As to your previous post that James of Edgefield was the son of
William? What do you have to document this, or is it just speculation.
Kathleen Woodrow, Linda and I have an original copy of John Gent's
will, and a copy of the deed where James of Edgefield sold his inherited
property to his brother William, and it is the same piece of property.

No, all I did was post what Neva has in her book...there is no documentation
for any of the connections from this group up...the only record is the Will
of William on Kings Creek...
Other than that there is no documentation for any of it...

Would be nice if someone would eventually claim this David as theirs; I
would almost be willing to put up the money for their dna test<g>.
IF this David in Rowan could ever be connected to Kershaw Co. SC, that would
be helpful. But as noted earlier, the facts to make the connection are not
there(yet).

David does show up in Kershaw County SC records...but as the DNA test show,
just because they're in the same county, doesn't necessarily mean they're
related...and the visa versa, just because their in a different county
doesn't mean they are not related...

In 1814 residents on both sides of the Yadkin River where it separates
Davidson County from Rowan County petitioned the state to build a bridge
across the river. Accompanying the petition was a survey map of the area.
The surveyor was W. Moore and the chain bearers were John Adams and Wiley
Coats.
Names mentioned on the map include William Smith, Fredrick Thomson, Beard,
Moore, Jas. Long, Beard, John Long, A. Long, and Merrill. Locations include
the homes of Obadiah Smith, Wylie Coats, Benjamin Simpson, Fredrick
Thompson, Philip Beck, William Chapman, James Atkinson, W. Moore, and
Alexander Long. Locations include the Pine Meeting House, Longs Ferry, Lewis
Beard's and Jonathan Merrill's ferry, Grants Creek and John Longs Road
House. There were about 100 signers of the petition including Wylie Coats,
John Coats and David Coates.

I seem to recall awhile back that someone was looking for a David Coats in
Rowan County, NC. I think it was in relation to a Kershaw, SC connection.
Well I found a David. In 1814 a David Coats signed a petition to build a
bridge across the Yadkin River near Potts Creek. Wiley and a John Coats also
signed. I can post more details if interested.

I have a far fetched theory based upon the fact that you haven't found
Rachel's husband's name and there is no unexplained Rachel in the first
hand documents of Newberry, SC that I can find. I'm taking a really big
guess here, but I think there is a possibility that this is the Rachel
married to William Cole in the Newberry, SC records. The Coates and Coles
have multiple documents that have either confused the two families together
or they are actually one and the same family because the t is not crossed
in some Coate doucments and the L is crossed in some Cole documents. They
also lived near each other and witnessed some of each other's deeds or
wills. William Cole had a wife named Rachel of unknown surname of similar
age. I keep hoping we find a Cole male to be tested to see if he in
particular matches the Thomas Coate/Marmaduke Coate line or Gabriel Coate's
line. I think there is a chance that this Cole branch was originally a
Cotes branch. They haven't been able to trace back beyond William Cole's
father and Thomas Coate lived near several Coles. Gabriel on the other
hand has a lot of data attributed to him that is also attributed to
William's Cole's nephew, Gabriel Cole.

Ahhhhh. Now the last piece of information is the most interesting. How
do you know that Rachel Oneal married a Coates?
That's exactly the generation I would have expected to marry a Coates from
some of the land dealings.

Yes, there is another William married to Elizabeth Miles in the area until
1805 when he moved to Ohio. He did not sell any land before he moved to
Ohio and is in no deed purchases that can be discerned from the deed
records previous to that time. William is my Marmaduke's son. It just
occurred to me that most of Marmaduke's sons had not purchased land in SC
before they moved to Ohio. Most were in their 20's when they moved with
Marmaduke up north.

This is neat. I'd be even happier if you knew of one of the older Oneals
marrying a female Coate. I've been on the lookout for that to explain
some of the land exchanges. Oh well. They were in the same areas more
than I knew. THANKS.

When did all the other Gallbreaths and John B. Oneal and Clement Nance get
William's land that they do name in their deeds of sale when they sell
it? Their deeds obtaining that land aren't in the deed records either...
and they are selling it off as early as 1800.
