Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
You know it just doesn't appear to me that too many people are concerned
about reporting their results...
Here's a Walker group that has posted even the names with an indication as
to where they are...that area designation might be helpful...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fabercove/test_results.htm
Same with the Baker group, they ship those names and numbers around via
email without hesitation...

Yes, My Marmaduke's wife was a childhood friend who got captured, probably
in the Rowan Co. Raids. When he was of age, he went from tribe to tribe
till he found her and bought her for a horse, bridle and saddle or so
tradition goes.

I've been studying the results of the DNA tests at
http://members.aol.com/stricklandquery/dnaproject.htm and noticed the
following conclusions in their data.
It stated that up to 3 mutations in what looks like 24 point tests was
considered within range to have a common ancestor. Does anyone know how
many mutations give the same likelihood for a 12 point test?
I personally think it's fascinating that we are getting so many variations
to start with. It will help persons that decide to join us have a better
chance of finding a cousin, because of the range we are getting. At the
same time, no wonder we've had so much trouble sorting these Coates.......:)

Charlotte, Since you said that one of the tests is in from John Coats (b.
1788) of SC who was married to Sarah Wright, wouldn't this be the John
Coats who was the grandson of Big John Coats through his son William? You
can find him on my site at www.ancestree.com if that helps.

This sounds good, but do include oldest ancestor on a seperate chart on the
page where you post the dna markers and kit number. Then we'd have a
better way to think about it and request correspondence via this discussion

I have absolutely no clue...
I think we need to confirm some of these lines as the last documented
ancestor...the reason for this is not to determine who your ancestor is, but
DNA will only determine who is cousins at this point with showing you have a
common ancestor if they match...
So anything beyond that which is not documented is useless at this point for
DNA purposes...
So for those test kits which we have received...please if the information I
sent through is not not correct, let me know...
I have several problems matching ancestors etc...email address you used to
order the kit didn't match the email you used in ordering the kit...you sent
me what you think is your line but didn't tell me which was your last
documented ancestor...or I didn't recognize your FULL names from names on
email messages...<g>...that's different...<g>..
So if you'll just look over that post as to the kit # and the ancestor I
posted for it, if it is incorrect please let me know...

This John is the son of Samuel Coat and Mary Saunders. Luckily, they also

If you mean my Marmaduke's son went to Ohio, yes, that's correct. He had
3 wives. The Henry that stayed in SC was married to Polly Long. Some
sources conjecture that he was the son of Henry and brother to my
Marmaduke, but I currently don't favor this theory due to Henry (Jr.'s)
age. I didn't realize that your William was a generation younger than my
Marm.... hmmmmm.

A distance of 7 or 10 mutations shows there is definetly no relation,
irrespective of whether you tested for 12 or for 15 markers. That some of
the markers match, in this context, is of no relevance...you should aim to
see at least 10 out of 12 markers match.
Wait for other participants results to draw any further conclusions.
In the meantime, study in more detail the FTDNA help pages.

Well, we just got some of our first kits back...
No matches, but when I do the Distance ?
One kit shows a distance to another of 7 and two others of 10...
These are not exact matches but some of the markers match...
So are these mutations?
Or does this mean that in 1 A.D. these three people have a common
ancestor?

While Rowan is blessed with an abundance of extant and often transcribed
records, the early Rowan deeds have some big gaps. Between 1745 to 1753 it
was very difficult to file deeds. You will find a few in the Anson County
records but for the most part folks didn't bother. Later during the French
and Indian War (1756-60 for Rowan settlers) Indian raids forced a fairly
large exodus from the frontier. Many never returned to their homes.

And then the deed records for Rowan don't show them selling or buying land
there..... NC Carolina records are really tough.

Thanks John. Even better. Note, Charlotte, though John wasn't in Hinshaw

lists. Does it give the date the taxlists were made in 1759?

This John is the son of Samuel Coat and Mary Saunders. Luckily, they also
left a family bible record of all of their children. Children included
Jacob, Henry, John, Amie, Samuel, Daniel and William... so James isn't one
of the unnamed sons here either.

Right...that's the one...
John, also looking over some old emails, those Coots in Guilford County NC,
from a history of some type...they were from Ireland and married into the
McQuestion family right?
So there may not be a Coats connection with them or we don't know at this
time...John Coots was the Sheriff I believe it was but the James Coots had
been there earlier...

Well, I don't mind doing that...but I'll have to have an ok from everyone
who is testing...
Anyone object to this...if it is ok to post your test kit number and values
let me know...I was a bit hesitant to do this, since the web is an extremely
public forum...but I'll handle it anyway, anyone choses...this is just all
extremely interesting...
Otherwise we're going to have to go with test kit # and earliest
ancestor...if you have an interest in a particular ancestor maybe posting
the request for further info to the list for the kit # and ancestor ... then
the person that has that kit could respond to you privately or via the list
if they like...

Would you mind presenting the information this way?
Thanks

Just from the description it looks like
7407 is a 12 step mutation from 7430
In this particular analysis 0 is the perfect match...
Whereas in the DNA 12 Marker comparision of kits, a 12/12 would be a perfect
or exact match...that is 12 markers in one kit matched exactly with 12
markers of the second kit...we don't have any like that...
I think these mutation steps mean thousands of years, but I'm not sure, that
Haplo type is where your ethnic origin comes in...

Does this mean that
7407(John Coats m Sarah Wright - SC)
and
7430 (Allen Coats, Rowan County NC)
are an exact match?
