Hi there,
I am looking for a photo of Mary A. Rose Gelfillan Coates, b. 1847 in PA, m. 1870 to Cullen Wister Coates in Cleveland, OH. She is my gr-gr-grandmother. Those of you related to this part of the Coates family probably know who she was. I found a photo of her in my grandmother's things, but it is poor quality and half her face is in a shadow, so I thought I would see if anyone else has a photo that might be of better quality. Also, I would be interested in knowing the date of her death.
Thanks so much,
Patty Walker

The interesting thing about this deed is...Ben is living in Wilson County TN at this time...
These have to be Wilson's kids...this land is for one of the Shelbyville lots ....

I have just added two more deeds from Bedford County TN into this album...both James Coats/Coates, showing as grantor...this land showing as having been formerly Wilson Coates' land...
Both on the Duck River, 1824/25...
Now this is making me think the William Coats deed has been mis-transcribed as William, if you take a closer look at that deed it could be Wilson Coats spelled with two *l*s Willson...
All these deeds are on the north side of the Duck River...

I finally got to info on a site about Rachel Wright whom I believe would be
the future wife of Big John Coate or her mother. I say this because it was
her family that were founders of the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in NC. In
this history written in the early 1800's, Rachel Wright was disowned in the
Cane Creek MM for some indiscretion not named. She apologized in writing
as was the custom and was accepted back into the church. However, in 1763
when she requested a certificate of removal to go to the Fredericksburg MM
in SC, she was accused of insincerity in her former apology and the
certificate was refused... this caused a quarrel amongst the members and it
was appealed to the Quarterly and then yearly meetings, where in 1764,
Rachel was given the certificate of removal and others were reinstated for
siding with her. Does anyone know of any other Wright family in the Cane
Creek Monthly Meeting area in the early 1760's? This would put the Wright
family in Cane Creek just a bit longer than suspected and could account for
why Rachel Wright and Big John Coate's marriage was never found. That was
in Orange Co, NC at the time but is now Alamance Co., NC. The site was

File #61 in this same album is a map of the Clinch River area in TN...this is from the Draper Manuscripts...I have finished going through the Draper Papers for TN and there is no mention of Coats in any variation...it appears to deal with a lot of military records and bios...Joseph Martin who was the son-in-law of Nancy Ward, Cherokee is in there, she is also mentioned etc...Joseph was a Brig Gen and Indian Agent to the Cherokee...lots of Indian wars during this early period...i.e. 1750s to 1800s....quite a bit of Indian info in them...Indian treaties etc...I didn't find any listings of people in forts but did find quite a few listings of military men who were under Joseph Martin, Andrew Jackson etc...also shows listings of some of the forts and settlements and who the men were that were stationed there....

In this album file #62 is the deed showing that William Coats formerly owned this land...and it borders Widow Coats dower interest...
Clearly there is another William Coats/Coates in Bedford County TN that we don't have any info on...

I am searching for descendents of my gggrandmother Hannah Barney Whitney. Her first marriage produced a daughter, Martha, who married Charlie Coates. Hannah was born in 1830. She lived with her daughter in her later years in Providence, RI. I am descended from her son, Fred Whitney.
Any response would be appreciated. Ronna
