Suggest you get a copy of "A genealogy of Moses and Susanna Coates..." by
Truman Coates. There is a gentleman on the list that is very familiar with
this line; unfortunately, I've misplaced his email address. Hopefully he'll
see this message.
Good Luck...

Federal Lawsuit Seeks Reparations for Slavery
The Associated Press
March 27, 2002
A federal lawsuit seeking unspecified reparations for the 35 million descendants of African slaves was filed Tuesday against the Aetna insurance company, the FleetBoston financial services group and railroad giant CSX.
The lawsuit also claims that as many as 1,000 unidentified corporations may have profited from slavery and sometimes helped it continue in the United States between 1619 and 1865.
"The practice of slavery constituted an immoral and inhumane depravation of Africans' life, liberty, African citizenship rights, cultural heritage and it further deprived them of the fruits of their own labor," the lawsuit said.
In a statement, Aetna, based in Hartford, Conn., said: "We do not believe a court would permit a lawsuit over events which -- however regrettable -- occurred hundreds of years ago. These issues in no way reflect Aetna today."
CSX said the suit had no merit and should be dismissed.
"Slavery was a tragic chapter in our nation's history," the company said in a statement. "It is a history shared by every American, and its impacts cannot be attributed to any single company or industry."
Officials at FleetBoston did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
Lawyer Roger S. Wareham said the lawsuit sought damages that would be put into a fund to improve the health, education and housing opportunities for blacks.
"This is not about individuals receiving checks in their mailbox," he said.
The plaintiff in the lawsuit was identified as Deadria Farmer-Paellmann, who said that she went to law school with the goal of eventually suing for damages as a result of slavery.
She said as many as 60 companies had cooperated with her five years of research and provided documents showing how they had assisted the institution of slavery.
Lawyer Ed Fagan said that a series of Holocaust lawsuits settled for $8 billion had blazed the legal trail for the slavery action. Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
Nicole,
Just wondering if you know about where in VA that Wm Coates was settled?
And while I am not of this line, I do know that there is a Dr. Edward
Coates(Ph.D.)who lives in Abilene, TX, who is a descendant of these
"Defeated Creek Coateses"; I haven't heard from either him or his wife in
some time, however, I think he is now retired from Abilene Christian
University and may have some information.

Larry

I had sent this E-mail to the Coates -L(a)rootsweb.com back May of 2000. (I was

I believe this Sion could be a brother to my Austin Marion Coates,
as well as Joseph Coates in Barnwell area.

The Indiana State Library Genealogy Division has a link to an On-Line
Searchable Database for Indiana Marriages Through 1850.
Gives Spouse, date of marriage and County. There are 55 for the Coats
selling and 9 for Coates spelling.
After pulling up the site, you will see a bunch of little boxes, just
below the boxes you will see "Genealogy Internet Links"
When you click on that, the Marriage Database is the first one listed.

Hi Sue and Coates Crowd,
As a fellow descendent of Moses Coates, I've fished out some family records
in the handwriting of Ann Lucretia Coates (daughter of Caleb Coates and
Elizabeth Giltert) who married John Alexander Rogers. (The information on
this old yellowed paper says Family Recordes, Feb 23rd 1845, Ann L. Roger's
Recordes. There are some fancy flourishes, so I'm not sure about the e's and
s's endings.)
Sue, if you send me your address (I must have it somewhere, but where?), I'll
send you a copy of the document. Meanwhile, I'll send the information I have
about your questions to the whole list:
>From Ann L. Roger's records:
Caleb Coates, son of Moses and Mary Coates, was born, 30th of 4th m near the
5th hour in the evening on the 3rd Day of the Week in the year of our Lord,
1781.
Elizabeth Coates, Wife of Caleb C. and Daughter of John & Ann Gilbert was
born 9th of the 2nd m. in the year 1790.
(The method of indicating days and months has the nd or rd on top of the m,
for month.)
This small, one page document goes on to list other offspirng and the dates
of the "departure" of some Stackhouses. I hope it sheds some light on your
questions, although I am aware that misinformation was spread in the past as
it is today.
Warm regards,
Albie Muldavin Davis (gggg grandaughter of Moses Coates & Mary Knight
Vickers.)

This is very useful. Rebecca would be the correct age to be one and name
to be the daughter of Sion and Sarah Coates. Sarah is often listed as a
Perry, but this has been clearly disproven by James Fort. Her maiden name
was not known, so you just gave us a great hint on a long time
problem. Her name could be Baye. They have the rest correct except for
the Simeon spelling when it was Sion. Sion, John, Gideon and Josiah, all
sons of Sion and Sarah moved to that area of Alabama. Coooolll.

Fellow Coats researchers,
I have been following the discussion of Sion Coat(e)s over the last few
days...well, actually off and again for the last few years. Although I do
not have a direct link to this branch of the Coats family, I do share a
historical interest in the Cherokee County AL group (Sion and Gideon). These
Perry sisters that keep coming up...can anyone tell me their given names? In
the 1850 (and/or 60) Cherokee Co. AL Census, an elderly women of age to be
Sion and Gideon's mother can be found living with Gideon. I do not have it
right here in front of me, but it seems that her name was Sarah. I imagine
that she is buried in the same cemetery as Sion. It was on the grounds of
the Coats Plantation and is all but gone now. I will also share this...in a
book that was written in the late 1950's or 60's concerning the history of
Cherokee Co. AL, the following information is given: "The Coats', Simeon
Coats as the progenitor, settled in Coate's Bend in 1829 along with the
Harbours. They were from Kershaw Co. SC." This section also mentions the
marriage of a Rebecca Coats to a Pleasant Harbour in 1842. If I am not
mistaken, this Rebecca Coats was born about 1823 in SC. Was she a sister to
Sion and Gideon---or maybe a cousin? I tend to believe a sister. The
aforementioned "History of Cherokee Co. AL" includes this concerning the
ancestors of a descendant of this Coats/Harbour marriage: "...grandson of
Pleasant Wesley and Rebecca (Coats) Harbour, ...the great grandson of Simeon
and Sarah (Baye) Coats." Personally, I believe that the information naming
the ancestor as Simeon (should be Sion) is flawed, but I was wondering about
the Sarah Baye Coats. On second thought, could this Simeon Coats have been
an older brother to Sion and Gideon (instead of father)---making the Rebecca
Coats indeed a to cousin to Sion and Gideon instead of their sister?
I will run for now before I confuse myself, along with the rest of us,
any further!!

it tried on him personally." Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865
