Yesterday, I noted that, according to the Barnwell Co, SC deed of Elijah
and Eleanor Coates to William Bars, Eleanor had recieved a land grant in
1787 under the name Eleanor Hickman. I checked the index today and found
the following grants recorded:
Hickman, Eleanor, p255, vol 18, 1787
Hickman, Eleanor, p86, vol 17, 1787
John Hickman, the grandfather of Pollard and Emilia Coates also received
land grants (perhaps for his Revolutionary War service):
Hickman, John, p243, vol 10, 1786
Hickman, John, p167, vol 12, 1786
The South Carolina state archives is going to put their big index of state
records online in 2002-- I can hardly wait.

This 1860 census should make your day! I'm excited! In the 1850 census
there was a child "Lan" which I think was probably "Dan" misread. If George
D. is the son of Rufus and Mercy Coats, and I feel sure he is, then if he
had a son Dan and one Sylvester, they were named after his brothers, and
Rufus after his father!
Let me know what you think of this! A good person in Mercer County looked
it up for me.

Hmmm. This one was interesting. William Coates could be the William who
was the son of John and lived his adult life in Halfax Co., VA/NC, b. in
Sep of 1749 who is the progenitor of many family members of Halifax Co., VA.

Robbie was kind enough to provide me with a copy of the deed of Elijah and
Elenor Coates to William Barr, from Barnwell Co, SC, 1801, which we have
mentioned a few times. The text is interesting and I will post a
transcript of it when I finish it. I'll summarize what appears to me to
be an important fact--
The deed transfers land that Elenor was granted in her own right in 1787
as Elenor Hickman. It would be very interesting to check SC land grants
to see if, indeed, there is a grant to Elenor Hickman. Assuming that the
the land was granted to Elenor Hickman in 1787, I'm inclined to think she
is a widow of some as-yet unknown Hickman. In my limited experience with
SC land grants, the only grants to females that I've seen were to widows.
After some discussion with Robbie, I'm inclined now to think that Elenor
Hickman is *not* the daughter Helena of John Hickman. We know of 4
children of Elijah and Elenor (Austin Coates and his sisters), but none of
them are mentioned in John Hickman's will. While Pollard and Emilia
Coates are mentioned in John Hickman's will, they are not listed in the
Austin Coates family tradition as children of Elijah and Elenor. If
Elenor is the widow of another Hickman, then neither she nor her children
would be heirs of John and that would nicely account for their absence in
John Hickman's will.
As for the father of Pollard and Emilia Coates-- there are two
possibilities: Joseph Coates and one of the Sion Coates. Joseph Coates is
in the 1790 Census of Orangeburgh SC next to John Hickman, so that lends
him a plus. If memory serves, Joseph doesn't show up in census records
after 1790, so he may have died after the birth of the 2 children, Pollard
and Emilia. If the father of Pollard and Emilia Coates was dead when John
Hickman made out his will, that may account for why they were specifically
given bequests-- he was taking care of the fatherless grandchildren.

Eleanor (or Helena) Hickman Coates' father was John Hickman-- who left a
will in Barnwell Co, SC which mentioned his daughter Helena Coates and two
grandchildren, Pollard Coates and Emilia Coats. He mentions three
sons: Charles, Thomas, and John. The testator, John Hickman, signed by
mark, so the exact spelling of Helena's name is open to some
variation. Another daughter of John Hickman was Elizabeth Tyler.
Elijah and wife Elenor Coates made a deed in Barnwell Co a couple of years
previous-- I have only seen the deed index and not the actual deed record,
so I don't know if it, too, is signed by mark. Given the similarity of
the pronunciation of the names Helena and Elenor, it is not too much of a
stretch (in my mind at least) to suppose that the same person is being
referred to in the two documents.
Some other Barnwell folks, like Peter Glover (who witnessed John Hickman's
will), moved to Mississippi about the same time that Pollard H. Coates,
Elijah, and Austin start showing up in Mississippi records.
A passport issued by the Governor of Georgia on 23 Nov 1811 for passage
"through the Indian Nations to the Western Country" mentioned Moses Tyler
and William Hickman with their wives and Abner Glover (another witness of
John Hickman's will) with his wife and seven children "all from Edisto
District South Carolina." I don't know exactly who this William Hickman
is, or if Moses Tyler is the husband of Elizabeth Hickman, but these
little hints sure are tantalizing.

Family story has it that Kersey Coates is the uncle of my gr grandfather and his brothers? One brother was supposed to have gone from Yankton S.D. to K.C. after the civial war and worked with his uncle Kersey at his hotel in KC and then he returned to Yankton and started his own hotel. The hard facts I have are that Kersey did have the Coates hotel and that my gr grandfathers brother did have a Coates hotel in Yankton. I have been in contact with his decendants in Yankton. I have not been able to find any information about my gr gr grandfathers parents in susquehana co. PA or Kersey's parents in Lancaster co. to tie the two ends together?

Not sure this is all of them...but I've got the probate index to the Macon County MO probate files and found these when I looked under the Cs

Rufus Coats - #1488 - Box 64 - Adminor, John Jones

This microfilm is really really dark so some of the info was unreadable...hmmm, and I don't recall seeing any dates on these....it's a pretty simple list of names, number of the file and the box it is in etc...
