Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Please understand that what you have is a HOAX VIRUS:
1. HOAX VIRUS: Similar to the "boy who cried wolf", a virus hoax is an e-mail
chain letter that warns a user of a virus. In reality, the virus it mentions
does not exist. The only true purpose of the e-mail is to spread
disinformation in the web community. If you receive a hoax e-mail, you
should delete it and inform the sender that the virus does not exist.
2. JOKE VIRUS: A Joke virus is actually a program that causes benign
activities to occur on your monitor. These activities cause no real damage,
and are only meant as a joke.

Gene; You are correct. Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not
after you. I am not being flip when I say this. I have been in the health care
business for 33 years and can witness what has occurred. Keep on being vigilant
and alert. There is much more to come.

At this time, I'm having no problems w/my computer after having deleted
the file. What threw me was the Japanese type symbol in front of the
description. Memorial Day? Beginning of WWII? Whatever.

I for one would not want DNA typing for genealogical use to be rejected out
of hand. I would like for people to consider in a knowledgeable way what
the potential consequences of submitting their and their families DNA are.
I'm sure it is supposed to be kept private and secure. However private and
secure only last until one or more of the following happen:
1- Some trusted person with access and insufficient integrity has a serious
money or morals problem
2- Someone makes a plausible case to a judge and gets a court order
3- One or more persons successfully hack into the computer system where the
data is kept
4- The company or organization fails and their physical property and data
assets are purchased
5- The company or organization merges with another (whose purpose may be to
gain access to the data)
I'll quit after five, but there are others, probably more than I can think
of.
When we make decisions that affect others, we should try to make them as
responsibly as we can. Ignorance rarely results in responsible action.
Thank you for your time.

Let's be reasonable about this. Everything can be mis-used.
That does not mean that we need to reject everything.
Just imagine what might have happened if Hitler had access to
cell phones, or DVD movies, or 1998 Buicks?
DNA technology can be a great asset to genealogists, as well
as other users. Let's make use of it where it is appropriate.

The list administrator can be reached at john(a)coates.net.
I think it would be inappropriate for me try to educate anyone on the use or
misuse of DNA data.
The following link is to a site that provides a look at several aspects of
DNA use. Both positive and negative aspects are discussed. The information
appears to be designed for a "lay person" audience, so most people should be
able to understand the concepts discussed. Anyone could "begin" their
education here.

I hope all of the folks contributing their and their families DNA for
genealogical use are fully aware of the other uses/abuses that can be made
of a DNA sample/record. I know that there are many trusting and trustworthy
people out there. However there are many who are not, worse yet there are
few laws protecting individual or group privacy, and the ones there are,
often aren't taken seriously.
If you think this is not a serious issue, you are extremely under informed.
I urge you to research the privacy issues, uses, and abuses (both actual and
potential) relating to DNA.
Research can begin at any Internet search engine or at your local library.
This will not be as much fun as genealogical research, and it will take more
than 30 minutes, BUT the issues and DANGERS as well as the potential
positives are truly awe inspiring.

If you read all of the info at "SARC" you find that the Symantec folks are
treating it as a HOAX! The SULFNBK.EXE file can be infected with a virus,
BUT it (SULFNBK.EXE) is a legitimate Microsoft file. Its mere presence
signifies nothing. If you delete it you most likely will have only deleted
a seldom used utility that was provided by Microsoft.
One of the purposes of HOAXes is to frighten people into damaging their PC
or its functionality while they try to remove the non-existent virus or
Trojan. The people who initiate HOAXes are just as much vandals as the one
who write viruses. They expect that in fear/ignorance/panic or some
combination thereof people can be induced to damage themselves.
Unfortunately they often succeed.
Please people, when you receive these e-mails that try to rush you into
deleting something from your PC, don't just blindly go and do it! Check it
out first, even if the person who sent it to you is sincere and well
meaning, it still is quite possibly a HOAX. The Symantec site referenced
below is a reputable resource, as is www.mcafeee.com. After all, if someone
you didn't know (or someone you did) called you up and told you that a
criminal working at your bank was about to steal your money. That you could
only prevent it by withdrawing the money and placing it for safekeeping with
the woman in the green dress standing on the corner one block down the
street from the bank. Would you question this before or after you found the
woman in the green dress?

I thought you'd like to read about SULFNBK.EXE Warning at the following URL:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html
This service is brought to you by the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center
(SARC).
It has been pretty well established that this virus warning is a hoax.
Could we please move on?
