I am searching for my gggrandmother, Rebecca Coats, b. about 1797 in SC, as was her husband-to-be, Barzilla Harrison. They fetched up in Miami Co, OH, where they were married in 1818. His father may have been John, and his brother, Richard. But I can find no information on Rebecca's family. Anything you would be willing to share would be appreciated. William; Those are all familiar Coats names. However, there are so many Jameses, Johns and Williams, it's hard to keep them straight. That Sleata is possibly Seata, which was the
name of my aunt, Seata Coats. This is close to my ggrandfather, John Alexander Coats, who moved from Lauderdale Co, Ms after the war, to Callahan Co. Tx. They may have stopped at
Coryell Co. on the way for a few years. I think he is buried at Cottonwood Tx, with a new replacement stone marking his grave.

This is my Cherokee line through Huff Demetrius Callaway Coats, this line goes down to Eliza Harlan and Samuel Craig in this book and it was Louisa Jane Craig, daughter of Eliza Harlan and Samuel Craig that married Huff D. Coats...they actually were married twice...once in MO and then again in the Cherokee Nation when they moved there...Char

Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Well, I was requesting a copy of that old Coats genealogy which they had published in one of their journals...but never got a response from them...I'm also finding that PA not sure all entities, really would rather have you physically visit them...but that just isn't possible in all cases...especially now with net etc...it just seems they should make their info more available via the net....

Charlotte; Interesting. When I started research in 1992, I went to PHL and visited. They had seven (7) files on the Coats-Coates
family. I made some copies, some of which I sent to Linda. Some people I've talked to have said some papers have disapeared over the
years. I'm sure any serious Coats researcher would find papers of interest there.

Take a look at the paragraph just before the heading of *Grants & Patents*...this could be an explanation as to why the various spellings within the same documents....most interesting....
It appears the name is spelled in the body of the deed the way it was pronounced but the signature was spelled the way it should be spelled....Coats/Coate/Coates may have been pronouced Cote/Cotes ...not sure I can get a Cole or Coles out of that...but Coots for Coats would work...
Isn't that interesting...not sure I'm real clear on the part about which spelling to always check for...
This just all gets more and more confusing...<g>...
