Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hello List Members,
Rootsweb is NOT removing all mail lists, only those that were in a
section called communities. They were lists that did not deal with
genealogy and not all of those lists were discontinued only those that
had not been active.
I don't think we need to worry about the loss of the lists that are
pure genealogy, they generate a great deal of traffic for
MyFamily.com/Ancestry.com/Rootsweb.com and traffic means dollars for
them. I administer several boards, all genealogy related, and some have
very little traffic, but since they are surname lists, they will not be
dropped. They want everyone who does a search for a surname to find
theirs, this keeps them in the MyFamily system. There are list for
different spellings of the same surname, we were all new at one time
and thought the only people we were related to were the ones who
spelled their name the same as we. This list is a good example of the
fallacy of that myth with Cote, Coates and Coats, and any other
spellings we find along the way, being the connected to the same
family.
While I am writing, I will mention my stone wall, seems to stronger
than brick. Elisha Coats said to have been born in Virginia and died in
Garrard Co., Kentucky about 1809. He was married twice, the wife of the
first marriage is unknown, but there are at least 2 children Balis and
Delilah, his second marriage was to Celia Furr, the widow of John
Hinds, there are 2 children of this marriage Joseph and Agnes. Joseph
is my ancestor. Joseph and Agnes settled and died in Fountain Co.,
Indiana.
Regards,
Tom Hesler

Subject: SS Numbers
FYI...
The first three digits of a person's Social Security Number indicate the
state that the person was living in at the time the number was assigned
(see > table). The exceptions to this rule are numbers in the 700-729
range, which were issued by the Railroad Retirement agency, the only such
retirement plan to have its own block of SSNs.
The fourth and fifth digits indicate the group number. The sequence is
reported to be odd numbers from 01-09, then even numbers from 10-98, then
even numbers 02-08, and finally odd numbers 11-99. All numbers issued
before 1965 are either odd numbers between 01 and 09, or even numbers
between 10 and 98. The last four digits are the "serial number," and run
from 0001 to 9999...
