Hi
I came across this website which is pretty awesome with the pictures
and wondered if you had heard of a Jane Coates who had married a
Garrett/Jarrett either in VA or SC or GA.
I think it was VA. Their daughter Rebecca Jarrett married my gggg
granfather Anderson Durham in Wilkes Co GA and started my father's
Durham line.

Hello,
I live in St. Louis, Missouri and saw on the local news tonight that there
is a BRIDGETON MEMORIAL PARK - 1843 - 1963 ( North St. Louis) that is
looking
for persons with family buried there. The airport is being expanded and
they
are going to move the CEMETERY.
Is there a way to get this message to as many listers as possible in a
short amount of time?
Can you help!

Those GA Jefferson County are rather interesting...seems to me Charles, James and William were on early tax lists...which could indicate they were brothers...then Charles and James are both dead by 1804...that seems a bit strange, I'm thinking maybe an Indian attack or something...but William who is appointed the guardian of Charles' kids could be either an older son or a brother William...but then William still appears in the jury records down to 1812, which seems to indicate this later William is the son of one of these early Coates....which might mean there are two different Williams in this group...
no mention of James' kids...and now there are at least one wife, Charles', who probably remarried, if James was married and had kids, he has a wife who probably remarried as well...Charles' wife in SC was Ann, so will be interesting to learn more about this group of Coates....also Charles' son is named Thomas...that second name Bu looks like just part of the name with blank space..so I'm not sure what the whole name is...and Melly maybe Milly...
Just some thoughts....

Subject: CUSTODIANS OF GREEN COUNTY KENTUCKY 1898
Taken from The ADAIR COUNTY NEWS, COLUMBIA KENTUCKY
JANUARY 19, 1898 EDITION
Typed as published and submitted
By Laura Frost Wright
CUSTODIANS
A list of Representatives Men who will manage Green County
Short Biographies gotten up by our regular correspondent
The following persons will be custodians of green county affairs for the
next four years.
D.T. TOWLES
Judge TOWLES is in his seventies, and has taken part in two wars. The
war with Mexico and the civil war. He has served as clerk of the Green
County Court, Judge of the Green County court, and was Master
Commissioner of the Green Circuit Court for the last five years. He was
elected by a safe majority at the last election for County Court Judge
over a very popular nominee for the republican party.
W.G. HOWELL
Mr. HOWELL was reared on a farm in a section of our county known as
Brush Creek, and began life about fifty years ago. He has served our
county in the capacity of County Court Judge for four years, and has
been a praticing lawyer for 12 years. More votes were counted for him on
the 2nd of November than for any other man on either ticket. He is an
original free silverite.
E. M. BLAKEMAN
Mr. BLAKEMAN is a farmer"s boy, and soon worked himself to the front as
a school teacher. He has been a lover of polotics since childhood, and
was Democratic committeeman from his voting precinct when at the age of
twenty-one. He was elected Clerk of the Green Circuit Court in 1892 on a
fusion ticket, and was re-elected in 1897 on the Democratic ticket with
a majority of 167.
PERRY F. MARSHALL
PERRY F. MARSHALL is one of those unfortunate hard working honest men,
who never thinks of politics only to perform his duty to his party.
Unconsciously he has planted himself in the hearts of his neighbors and
friends without a dream of political reward. Such a man can win over the
strongest opponent. Mr. MARSHALL has lost two houses by fire, and now
has an elegant little home in the western portion of this city. He is a
good business man and will make a good county clerk.
B.K. PULLIAM
Mr. PULLIAM is a teacher of standing and character, and has been taking
an interest in polotics for some years. The hand of affliction rested
heavily upon him a few years ago, and he is now traveling on terra firma
with two crutches. Last summer all eyes turned to him as the Democratic
candidate for the position to which he was elected. After a thorough
canvass of the county, although a strong man against him, he won with
over two hundred to spare. He is qualified and will make a good school
superintendent.
G.B. SCOTT
Mr. SCOTT is a farmer on Brush Creek. He is a hustler in the field and
will make a pleasant assessor.
T.S. COFFEY
Mr. COFFEY was a blacksmith by trade intil he turned his attention
toward the jail in 1893. He was re-elected in "97" Although Mr. COFFEY
was on a losing ticket his personal popularity won the election for him
byover one hundred.
GEORGE CLARK is our new surveyor, while Dr. CARTER will hold inquests
over the dead.
FISCAL COURT
J.M. MITCHELL was re-elected in his district. Mr. MITCHELL is a life
long Democrat and wins easily in his district.
J.J. COATS was elected in the greensburg District without Democratic
opposition.
J.J. RUSSELL was elected in the district composed of brentwood and
Donansburg. Mr. RUSSELL has never been an officer but he is a good
business man and we beleive the county"s welfare is safe in his hands.
AYLETT GRAHAM was elected in the Brush Creek district. Mr. GRAHAM has
served his people before in this capacity.

Well, I haven't gotten any of the microfilm index lists from the GA state archive yet...but found this on some microfilm I had ordered sometime ago at the FHC but it just now came in...
There are Jefferson County GA Court records:
Charles Coats - appointed commissioner - July 11, 1796
W. Coats - October 6, 1796 jury list
Charles Coats, esq appointed to run a road from Fenn Bridge to Louisville - July 15, 1797
James Coats appointed overseer of the second district - July 22, 1801
Thomas Coates, Bu (looks like some blank space here, so this may not be the full name) Coates and Melly Coates minors and orphans of Charles Coates and chose William Coates as their guardian - January 17, 1804
Daniel Cole appointed overseer of the road in the place of James Coates dec'd - January 30, 1804 - above this entry is also an entry that appoints Elisha Gore as constable in Capt McNair's company...wasn't it Elisha Gore that witnessed William Coats of Kings Creek will?
Estate of Charles Coats, deceased to sell 200 acres of land - January 23, 1805
William Coats juror at July 7th 1806 term

Subject: Coats Island, Hudson's Bay
The Coats name was given geographical importance by
Captain William H. Coats. Captain Coats had been the
master of a whaling vessel for some years but then
joined the service of the King. He made several
voyages of exploration into Hudson's Bay between 1727
and 1751. In honor of his exploration, his name was
given to COATS ISLAND in Hudson's Bay.
The only record of Captain Coats' voyages is an
account of his last voyage when he commanded the ship,
"King George" in 1751. In the account, Capt. Coats
comments that on two occasions his ship was sunk. Once
"in 1727 near the meridian of Cape Farwell when
running through the ice with a small sail when two
pieces of ice shutt (sic) upon us, by the tides (for
it was dead calm) and crushed our sides in, and sunk
her in twenty minutes".
The manuscript was published by the Hakluyt Society
of England and received by our Hoyt Library in
Saginaw, MI in 1889. Capt. Coats addresses some
remarks that this account has "been drawn up for the
use of his sons". The Hakluyt Society was unable to
trace the identity of his sons nor their descendants.
The only information that I have of Coats Land in
Antartica is that it was named for the sponsor of the
expedition of exploration and no Coats was present on
the trip. - Freeman Coats
