Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I've ordered the following rolls of microfilm:
4 rolls from TN - 2 from Bedford County, 1 from Lincoln County, 1 from
Robertson County - all land records (deed books)
1 roll from MD = Baltimore County early court records (land) 1600s
4 rolls from MO - 1 roll from Callaway County, a probate case index, not
sure what these are - 1 roll from Jackson County and 1 roll from Howard
County - all land records
3 rolls from KY - all three from Madison County KY early tax lists, and 2
rolls of land records
I have a request in for microfilm indices to KY State Archives also for
Fayette County, Lincoln County and earliest records available i.e. Fincastle
County - also a request in for indicies from NC State Archive for Rowan
County and Guilford Counties
Also ordering 2 rolls of film from PA State Archive - both are indexes to
land records pre and post revolution period...I spoke with them and they
said this will give me an overview of what they have...
NJ State Archive does not have any microfilm other than census records
available for interlibrary loan or purchase...all their records they tell me
are on microfilm through LDS...
I have not received the info from GA on their colonial records yet or from
the SC Archive on those Council Minutes...

Hi,
Is anyone researching the Coates of Dorset?
I am trying to locate the birth/baptism of William Coate in the Hilton area in about 1806. His father was called John but I have no mother's name as yet.
Thanks
Tracy Dunne
Hello,
I was just researching my Thomas line.
I have found that Simeon Thomas b. July29,1803 that married Esther Coates in
Henry Co,S.C. is a cousin to Martha Adeline Thomas
b.1829 married Charles Austin Coates and after his death she married Charles
brother William Elijah (Doc)Coates.
Charles and William Coates are both Austin Marion Coates and Margaret Coons
Sons.
Martha Thomas' father is named Simeon Thomas too.He was born 1800 in
Hickman, Tn. He is the great uncle of Simeon Thomas that married Esther
Coates.

Not too long ago there was a discussion about the name Coot/Coots. What was the consensus? Is it a variant spelling of Coats, or is it a separate and unrelated name?
While trying to find a connection between the names Coats, Holman, and Burnett, I came across the 1807 will of Isaac Holman of Rowan Co., NC. One of the witnesses was John Coot. Any opinions?
Mary C. Sparks
mcsparks(a)yahoo.com
Well, this is just my opinion...but I think to connect Coots and Coats there
needs to be some analysis of the records to see if perhaps the names were
used in the alternative in the same documents or documents dealing with the
same person...
In SC there are records that show Cote or Cotes was used as well as Coate,
Coates and Coats...and we know they are the same person...so I think from
that stand point you could say that Cote/Coate etc are
derivitives...however, there is also a separate Cote/Cotes surname...so you
really have to be careful with these...it might be that the clerk just mixed
up the pronounciation...remember those southern accents...I've got cousins
you'd think were from a foreign country...<g>...
I think in the Archive there is a Coots land record but the signature says
Coats....so just not sure at this point...plus I think there is a Coots
family...so one has to be really careful when making those leaps of faith
across spellings...
On the land record in TN for Coots I would have picked it up as Coats and
figured the clerk mispelled the name as Coots at the top...or that he
spelled it Coots and then discovered the correct spelling when he got to the
signature...I don't recall how the body of the deed looked....
But I think it would take some more info before you could say this was a mix
up and they could have just mixed up one person not necessarily the whole
family etc...
But if you look at enough documents you'll see either a pattern or you'll
find where the mixed up came from etc...
Char
Known for her over analysis of everything...<g>.

Wow, this is even better than Eastman makes it look...they're putting the MD
Archive Series on line...I don't know but that might be like those PA
Archive Series...I know NJ has a series as well...apparently they were
transcribed records done under that WPA thing, but put in bound
vols...anyway, they've started the land records and their going to link from
the series books to the original documents...
Boy, I wonder how long it will take the rest of the State Archives to do
this...

Well, I've decided to try my hand at some record distribution...
I always hate to order microfilm if I don't know what's on it...and have
gotten burned a few times...so I've decided if I order the microfilm and can
help others looking...guess I'd give it a try...
Costs will be nominal...sorta like Strictly by Name except I'm not going to
do transcriptions...takes to long and I hate reading that old
writting...<g>...I'll put index of names up also...so you can see what's
there...boy, is that nice...
Oh, any Coate, Coates, Coats info I find in any of the microfilm I order I'm
going to still scan and put in the Coate, Coates, Coats Archive...this will
just help defray the costs and it's fun...<g>..
Anyway, here's the link:
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/promotio.htm
I don't have anything yet...just testing the waters...I hope to get the SC
Council Minutes and then some Georgia Colonial Records to start and then
maybe some deed records from SC ... Eventually I'd like to put some of the
record groups on CD but that will be some time down the road...those SC
Council minutes are not on microfilm or published, so that might be great
for a CD...
Once again any Coate, Coates, Coats info will be extracted from all the
records and put in the Coate, Coates, Coats Archive just like always...

STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA TITHABLES: Quit Rents, Personal Property Taxes and
related lists and petitions, 1723-1790 John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr.
With an introduction by Michael Burgess. "The records in these books are
certain to provide genealogical breakthroughs for countless researchers
interested in colonial Stafford County....The records in this set are of
such a variety and importance that they bear noting here..." [review, The
Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter, Vol. XVI, No. 2, Mar.-Apr. 1990,
p.4]. 1990, 2v., xi, 612 pages, index, figures, maps. Stafford County was
formed in 1664 from the upper portion of Westmoreland County. As initially
created, it included all of the land from the Potomac River westward to the
dividing ridge of the Potomac Rappahannock watershed. Stafford's lands north
of Chapawamsick Creek were cut off in 1730 to form part of Prince William
County. In 1776 a major boundary alteration between Stafford and King George
so altered the boundary that the ridgeline no longer served as the dividing
line. The lower portion of Stafford became part of King George and the upper
half of King George was transferred to Stafford's jurisdiction. A total of
1,917 different surnames are recorded here, representing several thousand
individual families. More than fifteen thousand entries are included in the
sixty-four pages of triple columned index. [Staf] 2 vol. set $30.00

I called Joe today, and ask why he hasn't been answering my E-mail. Joe
said his computer had been down since December. He asked me to pass a-
long the mailing cost for his books.
1 Volume $2.10
2 Volumes $3.75
3 Volumes $4.00
4 Volumes $4.80.
Joe was going to call probably sometime today, concerning an anurisium
(and I am sure I really misspelled that word). He will, he thinks, be
undergoing surgery. He said it was life threatening. So we need to keep
Joe in our prayers. I will check back with him a little later. I should
have
gotten his daughter's phone number who lives about 30 miles from him.
Joe said his skin disease was a lot better.
Just thought I would pass along this information.
Thanks,
Barbara

I just finished talking to Grampajoec, his word was tel Char "He's alive
and coming back. Still working on recovering his data base of Coats. He
has had a heart attach, a rare skin disease and a replacement for an
artery that threatened his life. To Char he sends his thanks. To Louise
Cole he sends his never ending graditude for helping him by putting his
name on the PRAYER CHAIN which he attributes to his starting to recover
almost immediately.
He is revising some of his books but should have them ready soon. Each
book will be about 250 pages, each is arranged in a different format but
will furnish a world of info about the Cotes, Coats, and Coates.
More on Joe soon. He will not be back on the web until he gets all the
quirks out of his system(computer).
