Quite a bit of info on these...
Also I noticed on this page that I have John William Coats earlier listed as
the son of James E. Coats, James was John William Coats' brother, not his
father, Huff D. Coats was his father...

Charlotte ,
This is Nell Coats. My nephew Larry Burl Coats married Elizabeth Catherine
Coates of New Orleans La. Austin Coats is part of the names of males they
have
repeated in that particular Coates family from generation to generation. The
family as far back as they have traced began in Mississippi. On site for
different parishes in Louisiana is a phelora of Coates that descend or
appear to
descend from Austin Coates and that Miss. family . I have not pursued them
since
they are not our direct line. Rather I have been searching for my particular
brick walls and we have several.
Nell Coats
Suggestion maybe we could post some of our collateral lines and the areas
we
are searching for to this web site . Often we run across information that
benefits someone else that is also looking for needles in haystacks.

I'm not a member of COATES-L, but I monitor all RootsWeb messages for
SULLENS and SULLINS. The message above I found particularly interesting
since my wife's ancestor Lavinia (WITT) SULLINS (d. c.1775, Halifax Co.,
VA) was the daughter of Charles & Lamina (HARBOUR) WITT.
I appreciate receiving the new information about the children of Gideon
Edwards and Sarah (PENN) COATS.
According to the book, _The HARBOURs in America_, by Louis J. WILLIAMS,
1982, pp. 115, Rebecca Tillman (COATS) HARBOUR was the daughter of Simeon
COATS. On 25 Nov 1842 Rebecca married Pleasant Wesley HARBOUR, (born 30
October 1813, died circa 1900), son of John (Franklin) HARBOUR and Jane (or
Jean or Jennie) (MOORE) HARBOUR.
Following is a list of the children of Pleasant & Rebecca (COAT[E]S)
HARBOUR:
1 Permilia HARBOUR was born on 9 Jan 1844.
She married Jerry WILSON at Piedmont,
Alabama.
2 Aramanta C. HARBOUR was born on 8 Jan
1846. She probably died young.
3 John Augustus HARBOUR was born on 15 Oct
1849. He probably died young.
4 Adolphus Rolen HARBOUR was born on 29 Aug
1853 at Goshen Valley (now Piedmont),
Alabama. He married Philo Brown THOMPSON on 6
Oct 1875. He died on 23 Aug 1934 at Rome,
Georgia, at age 80.
5 James Wesley HARBOUR was born on 28 Aug
1855. He married Tallulah Kathleen BYRD on 3
Jul 1884. He died on 13 Dec 1935 at age 80.
6 Ellen HARBOUR married Charles Norton
THOMPSON.
7 Sarah Jane (Sally) HARBOUR married Thomas
Chesterfield COWAN.

Just a few comments this evening, before wishing everyone a wonderful
Memorial Day...
I was at the cemetery here in Orange County, CA, looking for another
ancestor...not Coats, but was rather surprised when the Cemetery personnel
asked me if I was looking for a marked grave...apparently there are quite a
few unmarked graves...now, that doesn't mean they don't know who's there, it
just means it has no head stone...so when doing reseach and you can't find a
marker make sure it's not an unmarked grave but the cemetery has the
records...
I also contacted a cemetery in KS and was surprised they had records back to
1883...someone somewhere takes care of the records...in my case it was one
person in the town that had the records...needless to say everyone knew
him...<g>...all they had on record was the death date...I was so amazed they
even had records back to that date I don't recall if they had the birth date
as well...I was looking for parent names...but that they didn't have...
I also contacted a funeral home last week I was busy...<g>...I was amazed at
the information they have, apparently they need to keep a lot of info...I
was also amazed that they will send that info to you and in my case at no
charge...isn't that a pleasant change...<g>... one of the records I was
looking for was a parents name for the deceased and they had it...right
there in their records...a lot of funeral homes didn't start til the early
1900s but some people born in the late or mid 1800s didn't die till the
1900s...so this is another good source for info...there is a web sit...
www.funeralnet.com I think it is...that will give you the address and phone
number of both funeral homes and cemeteries by state, county or city....
At least in OK and KS they were most helpful....
Now, have a wonderful Memorial Day and remember this is a hobby...<g>...

Yes, that is the impression I'm getting that there are two Austins...or
several as it appears here...<g>...but the Austin in TN is a different one
it seems...
I'm wondering if with some of these there might also be a *cousin*
connection...where brothers have named their kids after each other etc...

If I understand the situation correctly, the Austin Coates of Wilkinson
Co, MS must be another Austin (i.e. *not* the son of William and Susannah)
because William and Susannah's Austin was living in Tennessee in the
1830's and married another Dismuke. The Wilkinson Co, MS Austin died in
the late 1820's (if memory serves) and married a Margaret Kuhn (Coon).
So just as there are lots of Sions floating around, there seems to be a
surplus of Austins too.
I might point out that there is a Sion L. Coates from SC who died in
Cherokee AL and had a son named Austin. There is a Sion L. Coates in
Barnwell/Orangeburg Co, SC at the same time that Elijah (and son Pollard)
are there, so there might be some connection there.

Here are some notes which show a connection between Elijah and Austin
Coates of Wilkinson MS. If Elijah is the same as the one in Barnwell, SC,
then a possibility is that Austin is Elijah's son by a first wife and that
Pollard Hickman Coates is Elijah's son by 2nd wife Elenor (Helena)
Hickman-- that would account for why Austin was not mentioned as a
grandson in John Hickman's will.
The 1819 tax roll is the latest reference I've found so far to Elijah--
whether he died, or simply moved away, isn't obvious (except that there
isn't a probate record for him). As can be seen from the land records,
Elijah was not able to follow through to purchase any of the 3 tracts that
he entered-- one was forfeited, one was assigned to William Anderson, and
one was assigned to Austin. So Elijah may have simply moved on to greener
pastures leaving his partially-paid-for Mississippi lands behind.
