Hi,
My gr gr gr grandfather was George Coats. He was born in Newberry SC on Oct
9, 1806. I have his family Bible and know about all 4 of his marriages and
all of his children. I know that he moved to Miami County OH and then to
Indiana until his 1st wife died and then back to Miami County OH until 1854
when he moved to IA with his 4th wife and he died there in 1883. I have
never been able to find out anything about his parents or siblings. From
census reports I know he live next door to Marmaduke Coates in Miami County.
His oldest daughter, Mary married David Patty, and they, with their 1st
son, moved with him to IA. I have corresponded with a man researching the
Pearson Family, and he emailed me a family line stating William, (Big) John,
(Little) John, George. He had been told this line by an elderly lady and
does not know what documentation she had or used. I have not been able to
back it up. Have you seen any records that show any George Coat(e)s born at
this time? I got your name and email address from the Newberry County SC
genweb page. Any help you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

I called Joe today, and ask why he hasn't been answering my E-mail. Joe
said his computer had been down since December. He asked me to pass a-
long the mailing cost for his books.
1 Volume $2.10
2 Volumes $3.75
3 Volumes $4.00
4 Volumes $4.80.
Joe was going to call probably sometime today, concerning an anurisium
(and I am sure I really misspelled that word). He will, he thinks, be
undergoing surgery. He said it was life threatening. So we need to keep
Joe in our prayers. I will check back with him a little later. I should
have
gotten his daughter's phone number who lives about 30 miles from him.
Joe said his skin disease was a lot better.
Just thought I would pass along this information.
Thanks,
Barbara

I wonder if this could be 'my' Henry (AKA of Goosepond). His first wife (at

"Woman fights to save 1800s cemetery
Researcher says her ancestors could be buried in plot DOT wants to use

By Preston Sparks and Melissa Hall
Columbia County Bureau
Jean Atilano of Waxhaw, N.C., has been digging through the historical
records
of Columbia County in search of her family lineage for nearly four
years.
Today, though, she's simply hoping Columbia County officials will keep
what
she's found buried.
Mrs. Atilano is fighting to save a circa-1800s cemetery in Evans,
which could
contain as many as 18 of her relatives. The graves are in a grassy
plot
sandwiched between new Plymouth Neons and brightly colored soft-topped
Jeeps
at the Milton Ruben Chevrolet dealership on Washington Road.
The county needs this land to widen Washington Road and construct
another
turn lane at Baston Road, one of the county's most dangerous
intersections.
They passed a condemnation hearing March 8 and are now ready for
another
hearing March 29: this one to get the OK to move the graves.
``It's too early at this point to say where they will go or how it
will be
done,'' said Natalie Dopson, an attorney representing the county in
the
matter.
Public hearing
When: March 29 at 10 a.m.
Where: Columbia County Courthouse, Appling
So it's the county vs. Mrs. Atilano.
``I guess why it's so sensitive to me is because I lived with my
grandfather
a lot, and he was a Tomkins,'' Mrs. Atilano said of the Tomkins Family
Cemetery. ``It reminds me of something someone once told me: If you
don't
know where you came from, how do you know where you're going?''
But officials know where they're going: it's a road plan referred to
as the
River Watch Parkway/Washington Road/Baston Road widening project, said
Rusty
Merritt, Georgia Department of Transportation area engineer.
DOT work on the project -- which calls for expanding River Watch
Parkway and
widening Baston Road and Washington Road -- should begin this summer
and take
two years to complete. The project also will add two left- turn lanes
from
Washington Road onto Baston Road.
Though the project will be funded by the DOT, the county is
responsible for
acquiring right of way. The cemetery was discovered as deeds were
researched.
``At first we thought it was a pet cemetery,'' Mr. Merritt said.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
--
The marker is the only indication that there is a cemetery near Milton
Ruben Chevrolet. The land has been targeted for a road-widening
project.
JIM BLAYLOCK/STAFF
----------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
--
Mrs. Atilano said she began researching her family's past in 1996,
knowing
only that a great-great-grandfather was from Augusta. After narrowing
the
search to Columbia County Courthouse deeds and contacting local grave
hunter
Jean Blackard, she found her family's graveyard.
There's no way of knowing for sure who's buried in the Tomkins Family
Cemetery, though, because tombstones were removed many years ago.
There are
now only four white flags poking out of the grass and a granite grave
marker
hidden between overgrown holly bushes. The headstone -- for Frank
Kauffman,
who died in World War II -- mentions pine trees that were planted as a
memorial to him. But they too are long gone.
Mrs. Atilano hopes to use state cemetery laws -- which would protect
sites
where someone of historical significance is buried -- to save the
plots. The
Tomkins Family Cemetery may hold a dozen or more slaves.
If the county and Mrs. Atilano can't agree on the relocation of the
graves,
the road project will be delayed, but it won't be stopped, County
Attorney
Doug Batchelor said.
``We've clearly got to get this resolved, one way or another,'' he
said. "
TOMPKINS FAMILY HISTORY & CEMETERY
by Jean A. Guillen-Atilano, Waxhaw, N.C.
My great X5 grandparent, Thomas Tomkins arrived 1740 in Virginia. In
1749
Thomas and his wife Mary are residents of Bladen County, N. C. Deeds
of
Anson County, N. C., which was formed from Bladen County document
Thomas and
Mary as residents. Thomas's estate is settled in 1777 and his son
Stephen
Tomkins is listed. I am a descendant of Stephen Tomkins Sr. Stephen
has
been documented as a Captain in the N. C. Militia during the
Revolutinary War
and C5 Commissioner in Anson County. Stephen married "Puggy" Franklin,
written to be a cousin of Benjamin Franklin, the politician and
inventor.
The name of Franklin is still given to present day descendants.
Stephen and Puggy moved circa 1795 to Olde Edgefield County, S. C.
near Plum
Branch, now in present day McCormick County, S. C. I have located the
family
cemetery which is located in Sumter National Park and is still
sheltered by
majestic oak trees.
Stephen Tomkins, Jr. married Elizabeth Brooks, the daughter of James
Brooks
and Margaret Thomason. James Brooks was the son of John Brooks and
wife
Susan who arrived in Virginia in 1700 and lived near the mouth of the
James
River until they moved to Chathem Co., N. C. James has also been
documented
as being in S. C. Militia during the Revolutionary War.
Stephen, Jr. and Elizabeth's daughter Sarah Tomkins (1800-1881)
married her
cousin Francis Tomkins.
Francis (circa 1788-1837) was the son of Stephen Sr., and Puggy
Tomkins. I a
descendant of Francis and Sarah Tomkins.
Francis and Sarah moved from Edgefield County, S. C. to Quaker
Springs,
Columbia County, Ga.in 1836. I have a copy of deed where Francis
purchased
land from James Lyons, who formerly lived near the Tomkins in Plum
Branch, S.
C. Francis and Sarah were the parents of Virginia Pocahontas, Samuel
Powhatten, Elizabeth C., Louisa R., Mary B. and Stephen Franklin.
Francis
died on a trip to the southwestern part of Georgia and was brought
back to
Quaker Springs. He was taken back to Plum Branch and buried in the
family
cemetery. Sarah married circa 1839 to her first cousin Francis H.
Tomkins of
Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tenn. Their children were Susan C., Turner
Clanton and
Augustus.
Stephen Franklin married Mary Emma Johnson. They were my great, great
grandparents.
Sarah deeded land in Quaker Springs to each of her children. I have
copies
of deeds, obtained from Columbia County Courthouse, Appling, Ga.
Augustus died 1854-1860, Louisa died after 1870 census and before 1880
census, probably before August 1871, Mary Emma died 1871-1880, Sarah
died
1881-1882, Pocahontas died 1883-1885, Powhatten died circa 1884,
Matthew H.
Hunter, Sr. the husband of Susan died 1902, Ranson Evans, the husband
of
Elizabeth died 1900-1910, Elizabeth died circa 1913, Turner died 1916,
Susan
died 1916-1917, Mary died 1917. Matthew Henry Hunter, Jr., the of
Matthew
and Susan died 1940 and his wife Annie Mae Jones died 1941. Family
members
lived in Quaker Springs. Obits from the Augusta Chronicle and
information
from Elliott Funeral Home, Augusta, Ga. document Turner and Mary
burial at
the Tompkins family cemetery.
Matthew Jr. death certificate lists his burial at Hunter family
cemetery,
which is the Tompkins cemetery.
Mr. James Kauffman, the great grandson of Turner Clanton and Elizabeth
Autry
has stated there are 30 to 40 graves at the Tomkins family cemetery.
James
was told by his mother, Clara LeSuer Kauffman Pou Bonistat the
cemetery is
the burial location of white and black persons, some were slaves.
The estates of Francis, Sarah F. and S.(tephen) F.(franklin), Turner
C., Mary
B. Tomkins and Elizabeth C Tomkins Evans are in Georgia archives,
Atlanta,
Ga.

Hi listers,
My name is Barry Wilmot and I have been tracing my Wilmot family on and off for a couple of years. Thanks to the wonders of the internet I have discovered a new family in the USA and Canada as well as cousins spread all over the UK.
We are now working together to find more of our lost relatives.
My great grandmother was Sophia Margaret Coates and she was born on 20th September 1849 at 28, Railway Street, Bishopwearmouth,Sunderland. Her father was Thomas Coates, a mariner and her mother was Anne Coates, late Young, formally Marsh.
She married Joseph Fleck Wilmot on 24th February 1868 at the parish church of St Thomas, Bishopwearmouth.
They went on to have 13 children.
If there is anyone with a link I would love to hear from you
Best Wishes

Charlotte...I got a reply from the Presbyterian Archives. They have a
book on the Cannon's Creek & King's Creek churches which they said
contains mostly tombstone inscriptions. They don't loan or copy books.
You have to go to their library. They did say however, that this book is
in the Newberry Library. I may write to them & see if I can find out how
big the book is & if, for a price, they would be willing to copy it. I
imagine the tombstone inscriptions are in the Newberry Cememetry Book.
They didn't say what the other information is. Their letter was very
brief...Don

Hopewell Friends Meeting House
This Quaker meeting house located west of Clearbrook in Frederick County Va.
on Hopewell Road off of US 11 is one of the oldest buildings in Frederick
County and is the parent (or Monthly) meeting for a number of smaller
meetings that developed over time like Crooked Run, Winchester Centre, Back
Creek, Upper Ridge and others. Many of Robert Mackay's descendants were
married under the care of Hopewell Friends and some attended meetings there.
In addition to that many of Isaac Steer and Hattill Varman's descendants did
also likewise. The Hopewell Friends Cemetery sits right near the meeting
house and contains numerous graves of early Friends who lived in the area.
Among them are graves of Robert Mackay's descendants and the graves of Isaac
Steer's and Hattill Varman's descendants. The meeting is still active and in
fact the author of this website is a regular attender.
