Yeah, but look where five of his kids were born...in GA...so he must have gone from SC to GA then to LA...wonder if this could be the Morgan Coats', in Jackson County GA, son...boy this is interesting...better yet...1850 Census if he was 48, he was born in 1802? The Morgan Coats in GA had a land lottery grant in GA, don't recall if it was the first or second...could be the same Morgan Coats...I don't know anything about the Morgan Coats in GA except that he was in Jackson County, GA...I've been trying to get some of the land records from GA State Archive...but man they are really slow in responding...guess I'll have to give them a call tomorrow or Monday....but there is also a group of Coats in Jefferson County GA...a Charles, James and William Coats...from Court records it looks like both Charles and James died about 1804, both about the same time or year...I thought that a bit strange as in...but maybe not...but I am trying to get some of those records out of GA...
I think you are on to something here....

Morgan Coats age 48 wouldn't have to have my Grandfather Simeon Thomas as a
Witness to him being 21 years of age.
I believe this Morgan must have had a son Morgan Coats that married in 1851
to Sophiah Rawlings
Note: that this Morgan Coats is from SC and he lived in Mississippi in 1836.
There is a possiblity that Morgan is a relation to Austin Coates.
I feel before coming to Mississippi from SC that Austin Coates family
probably went to Georgia as did not that travelled from SC to Mississippi.

Charlotte,
I am a descendant of John W Coats and Fannie Matilda Bogar. He was born about 1873, married in Lafayette County, Missouri 12/24/1895. His ancestry is a complete mystery. I believe that he may have been a grandson of Alfred Alonzo Coats b 1798 in NY. Alfred's sons John, Owen, or Alonzo B Coats would be the most likely father of John W. Have you ran across John W in any of your Coats research? I have been told that he and Fannie "Frances" were married at the Coates House Hotel in Kansas City.
Thanks!

I went to the courthouse in Catahoula Parish, LA last week and found a
marriage license with Morgan Coates marriage to Sophiah Rawlings June10,1857
. Son of Clem Coates.
My grandfather Simeon Thomas was one of the witnesses.
Simeon Thomas' daughter was married to 1st Charles Austin Coates 1846 then,
2nd William E.(Doc) Coates 1859 (after Charles A. Coates death.) Both of
these are sons of Austin Coates.
Simeon Thomas is at all the related Coates marriages as witness.
He is a Justice of the Peace in Catahoula Parish but, I haven't seen where he
married any of the Coates.
Does anyone have any information about Clem Coates and Morgan Coates as far
as relationship to Austin Coates b. 1788 married to Margaret Coon.
Also, Austin Coates , sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Coates was married to
Benjamin Rawlins-Rawlings , Sophiah Rawlings may also, be related.
Thank You
Robbie
I had a large chunk of my places and sources disappear from my database in
UFT about 3 months ago. It forced me to rethink using the program that I'd
loved for all it's versions over 20 years, and in many ways I think I've
found a better program. Check out my homepage at www.ancestrees.com to
tell me what you think about the new layout that was created with a new
program for me called LEGACY.

This is a tremendous site...if they have the records in here, you can actually look at an index of the records via names...I went to Caswell County NC, I'm not familiar with how this works, so I have no idea how I go there...but I found an index for all of Caswell County NC land grants by name...I still haven't figured out where the microfilm number is...but just being able to see and index sure helps...there were no Coate, Coates or Coats lists...I did see a Cates...

These are actually very good clues, but it also depends what religion they
were. In the Quaker religion, the first male was usually the wife's
father, the 2nd male was the husband's father, the 1st daughter was the
husband's mother and the 2nd daughter was the wife's. They usually didn't
name any child after themselves, but the rest were often named after each
of their siblings in order from oldest to youngest. Great clues.

Let's see Rev Will:
First son: James - Rev Will's father
Second son: William - Nancy's father
Third son: was that Wilson? oops wrong father...<g>...
First daughter: Mary - Nancy's mother - that would be right
Second daughter: Rachel - father's mother - I think this could be correct as well...
Boy, the males just don't fall in line though....

OLD NAMING PATTERNS
>The first son was named after the father's father.
>The second son was named after the mother's father.
>The third son was named after the father.
>The fourth son was named after the fathers eldest brother.
>The first daughter was named after the mother's mother.
>The second daughter was named after the father's mother.
>The third daughter was named after the mother.
>The fourth daughter was named after the mothers eldest sister, always.
ALSO:
2nd wife's oldest daughter named after the first wife, using her full
name.
Children after those listed above were usually named after a favorite
relative with some possible exceptions:
If a child died in infancy, a later child might be given the same name.
When a newly ordained minister baptized his first child, if that child
were
a boy, he would be named for the minister, if a girl, she would receive
his
surname as her middle name.
If a child were fostered, usually because of being orphaned, he may be
named for the foster parent.
If you are sure that you have the earliest birth or baptisms and that
they
are in the correct order then, if John's first son is named Charles and
his
second daughter is named Elizabeth then John's parents must be Charles
and
Elizabeth.___________________________________________________________

I just got an email from the NC State Archive...they tell me the original land grants are not available on microfilm for Orange County or Rowan County NC...they are in paper form at the archive...:(
Not sure I can get copies of complete volumns of those like SC...but maybe that might be an option...

Hello,
I am looking for information on Nathaniel and Henry
Coates. This is my husbands line, and I don't have very many particulars
about them. Nathaniel was married to Martha Lamar in Wilkes County, Georgia.
Henry Coates was the father of Nathaniel. The information I was sent, says
Nathaniel was born in Virginia and his mother was Sarah Young. Is this
correct? I would really like to know more about this family, for my
children's interest and my own.

Has anyone done any research in either Orange or Caswell County NC for Coates, Coate or Coats...

Hello to everyone on the Coats List:
I just wanted to tell you that we have just lost one of our oldest family members.
Veda Coats was born near Carmi, Illinois on March 20, 1909 and passed away on November 12, 2000 at Anthony, Kansas. Her parents were Solomon and Rosanna (Taylor) Coats. Her paternal Grandparents were Solomon and Catherine (Trotter)
Coats. Her paternal G-grandparents were Sion and Catherine (Musgrave) Coats. She had one sister, Estella and three brothers, Charles, Everette and William. They all preceeded her in death. Her funeral will be in Anthony, Kansas on

Some observations in reference to the Ben Coats, jr deed I mentioned before in Bedford County TN, the witnesses were: William Coats, William Gore and a McCuistion (sp) - this deed was signed in June of 1817 and recorded in Sept of 1817
Rev William Coats in Smith county moved to MO in 1817 as well, but his deeds are dated January of 1817 and March of 1817 the latter recorded in April of 1817...so he would have been gone from TN before June of 1817....
So this would distinquish Rev William Coats from this William Coats in Bedford County...
Also the fact that the deed says Ben, jr. would indicated his father was a Benjamin as well...
