Well...nothing new...Benjamin Coats in NC is indeed in Iredell County, so
will have to look there for his will...
I ordered the next two equity record microfilms for Newberry County, a
microfilm of GA land plats and some NC land records...early, not sure I
anticipate finding anything on the NC microfilm but started with the
earliest date and will work down...
Also the CoatsTimeLine...is updated I got all the SC records in there except
the Charleston records...the file is also uploading in small letters and the
link is in a different case...so will have to correct that before you can
access the update...also fixed a file jwestate.pdf in the archive...the file
apparently was not opening properly...but it should work now...this is a
Wright Coate document..
And indeed, the 1763 plat for Michael Hunt is not the plat I was thinking
of, this plat is for land that he owned on the Saluda River and does not
show William Coate as adjoining land owner...sorry, it is the 1771 plat of
his that shows William Coate as the adjoining land owner...AND, this plat
very clearly shows that his land had the Bush River as a boundary...so
unless he owned other land where the Union County Historical Society map
shows his plat, that would not be his 1771 plat and could very well be
wrong...it appears they have used another plat in that map which must show
Michael Hunt as an adjoining land owner, since Michael's plat is not shown,
just his name is penciled in...
So it appears the earlies Coats we show is 1766 as William Coate on the Bush
River...not 1763
I also got some info on the Callaways in KY, this in hopes of adding to our
info on Daniel Boone...it appears there is as much confusion in this family
as the Coates...anyway, the tie in between the Callaways and Boone family is
there...these are records from the Filson Club in KY...anyway, there are no
Coats listed in any of the three vols this club put out on early KY
families...
Will try to get them all scanned etc...so you can take a look at them...the
NC Wills are for 1665-1900...the only early Coats listed in here is Benjamin
and it shows he died in 1803...there are others but Benjamin is the
earliest...will take a look at Iredell county as well for records...

grandmother. I found them in the census 1900, but everyone disappeared in
1910. My grandmother was married by 1920. Are any of the above related to
you? I am interested in finding out more information on them. Could you

Charlotte, This is all excellent - but it's still entirely possible that
both pieces of property were purchased by the same William Coate. All we
can tell for sure is that they were two different pieces of property.

Yes, quite true...I keep forgetting that...hmmm, as I was going over the
documents in the archive, I also noticed you had sent me some deeds, that I
didn't find in the microfilms I was using...so this also leads me to
believe, there are some other records somewhere...just have to keep
looking....

Well I have updated the Coats Time Line and it should include all the Coats
documents from SC that I have...
Very interesting this time line...
First of all: I think the William Coats with land adjoining Hunt and the
William with the 1766 plat are two different Williams.
Reasons: The Hunt plat is dated 1763 and that plat shows that a William
Coate had land there at least by 1763 the date of the Hunt Plat...this
couldn't be the same land as the William with the 1766 plat...because 1) the
1766 plat doesn't show a Hunt as an adjoining land owner and 2) that plat is
dated 1766 which is after the 1763 Hunt plat...
We have no other documents or at least we don't know of any other documents
for this William Coate adjoining Hunts land...this is the only record that
shows a Coate was in Newberry prior to 1763, which is what the Old Newberry
County Histories have said...
This would at least reconcil why the Union County Historical map shows
Hunt's land north of the Bush River, but the land discription shows it is on
the Bush River, that just means that was the identifing body of water, or
that's what I've gathered from my readings....and the William Coate plat of
1766 which is on the Bush River literally...
That time line also seems to indicate that we are missing documents between
the years of 1774 and 1783...big gap there for records...this is just about
the time of the Revolution...so I'm not sure what might have been going
on...but it could also mean the records are located somewhere else, another
county or NC or something...but there just seems to be a lot of records
missing for that time period or else the Coats' weren't doing anything, i.e.
dying or selling land etc or witnessing anyone elses documents etc...
This I think is why we are having some much trouble finding all the
connections...we just haven't located the records yet...<g>....
I also think there are two other Williams in the area...don't have the
particulars on those yet...but it just appears from that time line there
might be two Williams selling land at about the same time period....

Hello. I found your post regarding the Christopher Coats family in
the TN-Sullivan-L archives.
I am researching the Civil War regiment 4th Tennessee Cavalry
(Union), and in that regiment there were several COATS soldiers,
one of them (Henderson) was the son of Christopher, and I believe
that another one (James) may have been the son of Christopher's
brother.
1) Henderson COATS. enlisted in Co B Nov 26, 1862 at Harlin,
KY. At that time he was described as 27 years old, 5' 6" ht; dark
complexion, blue eyes; black hair; born Sullivan Co., TN;
occupation farmer. He was killed in action Sept 28, 1864 at
Pulaski, TN. His widow Sarah was enumerated in the 1890
Veteran's census, living at Horace, Sullivan Co.
2) David COATS. Enlisted in Co C August 18, 1862. I have very
little info on him, because he was apparently killed at Cumberland
Gap Aug 22, 1862.
3) James S. COATES. Enlisted in Co K April 29, 1864 at
Knoxville, at which time he was described as: age 37; 5' 11" ht;
dark complexion; grey eyes; black hair; born Sullivan Co., TN;
occupation merchant. He was promoted to Corporal May 21, 1864.
He survived the War, and was enumerated in the 1890 Veteran's
census living in Sullivan Co. He did apply for a veteran's pension,
and I have ordered those papers from the National Archives (but will
probably not receive them for several months yet).
If you have any additional information on these soldiers and their
families I would be grateful for it, especially concerning JAMES, as
I am writing a book about the men of Co K.
Thank you
Jessie Blalock

I've also added a page for Time Lines...
The first is not complete and only includes the documents from the first
Newberry County page and the other county pages for SC...
As I go through the achive...I'm going to do these for each state and then
when I'm done...I might make one great big one...<g>..or just keep
accumulating them...anyway, the date that it was done and the arears and
dates it covers will be listed likewise...it might get to big if I try to
put them all together...so it might be a combination of states etc...
The first one is at:

Well, finally got all the documents I have scanned and up..the Newberry
Pages are getting so large I had to start a new one...<g>...
The Equity Records are at:
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/newberry1.htm
There is a new page also for North Carolina records at:
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/north.htm
This is the Thomas Coats in Rowan County NC that witnesses the will of a
Smart....
The 1828, hmm, that could be 1838, I might have that date wrong but from
what I can gather the Cherokee Lottery was held twice and these are records
from the second lottery...they are at:
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/resgeorgia.html
There are some Bakers in there as well....these are not the actual records
but are a reference book showing the number and includes a map of each
section where I found a Coats etc...
Enjoy...Char

Read down to Feb. 20, 1886 for a mention of Mr. Boles. I=20
don't know which Mr. Boles the author means. But Uvalde is a tiny=20

Received letter from Minnie and Mary Pearce and John and large lot or

February 18, 1886.
Clear and cool this morning. Ice =87 inch thick this morning. How =
cool
it gets here after night compared with the day. Fred is about home today.
South wind and some clouds south. It hasn't rained here for 6 months yet=
I
find some moisture 2 or 3 inches below the surface. It rises from below,
stands droughts well. Heavy dews and fogs in Summer helps. I rode about
two miles south of Fred's through a good deal of bushes and trees. some
good land but very difficult to clear. So much grubbing necessary. Cost
$20.00 an acre to get it into cultivation. Some beautiful view. Tonight=
we
attended the Sunday School prayer meeting at the school house. Fred
conducts it, praying, singing and explanation of the lesson: - rebuilding
the Temple by order of Cyrus. Fred speaks well. We have everything read=

February 19, 1886.
Clear and pleasant. We all arose early to get off - but disappointe=

The hack did not get back and the spring wagon had no harness, none to be

My wife, Shirley and I concluded to go to the top of a mountain about a m=

valley. The Frio River, groves of live oak and cedars, stretches of open
prairies and all surrounded by mountains. How wonderful are works of God=

nature. These mountains and valleys show signs that at some time or peri=
od
in dim past, some gulf or ocean covered them. Fred has been about home
several days. Mr. Hughes called and took supper. He keeps Fred's goats.
They went to the Temperance Council. We expect a hack tomorrow to take u=

to Uvalde.
February 20, 1886.
Little cloudy this morning, early. We left Leakey this morning earl=

an open spring wagon with Mr. Boles and his wife. The seats had no backs
and we were crowded and in an unpleasant east wind blowing in our faces.
We enjoyed the scenery and returning over the same road we came. The sce=

She made us a pot of coffee and they were very kind. Fred practiced in
their family. The cloudiness increased as the day advanced. We reached
Uvalde before eight o'clock very tired. Stopped at a boarding house near
the depot. We gets no sleep, had headache. Went to the depot at two

well. Now at noon it is still pouring down rain, a great blessing for th=
e
country as it hasn't rained for six months. We are quite unwell. I have
some headache today and my wife has a sick headache. The rough ride
yesterday and loss of sleep was too much for us. We received a letter fr=
om
Mrs. Durfee and a postal from Mr. Howison Friday night at Leakey. I
suffered a good deal all the afternoon and evening from headache and a so=
re
throat from cold. Took a pill.
February 22, 1886.
Cloudy and warm. I feel very well this morning after a good night's
sleep. It is very muddy. We moved over to Lizzie's this morning. I wal=
ked
down to the lumber yard before noon. Met Dr. Percy Johns on street.
Shirley got a letter from his grandma. The sun shone some this afternoon=
,
warm. The religious meetings preparatory to Moody's visit are going on
every night, led by Mr. Brown. I went with Henry to the meeting tonight.
He discussed the tests of discipleship, cross bearing, unwillingness to g=
ive
up the dearest friends, property and pleasures for Christ.
February 23, 1886.
Cloudy and warm. Wrote to Fred. Walked to the office in the foreno=
on.
It commenced raining about 11:00 a.m. I has continued to rain, heavily m=
ost
of the day. These rains give joy to these Texas people as they insure go=
od
pastures and good crops.
February 24. San Antonio.
Cloudy and rain this forenoon. My wife was troubled with sick stoma=
ch
yesterday evening and during the night and this morning. Wrote to J. E.
Stonebraker, and my wife to Mattie today. Walked down to the office in t=
he
afternoon and to Post Office.
February 25, 1886.
Cloudy still. It shows some signs of clearing in forenoon. Wind in=
the
west and a little cooler. No fire today. Don't feel very well today, he=
ad
out of sorts. Walked down to the office with Shirley. In afternoon, clo=
udy
but little cooler and signs of clearing. Shirley received an account of =
the
persons who joined the church since we left home. most of them children =
of
the Sabbath School. The Lord is mindful of his covenant. Though very
little, the wind dried the streets a good deal. I walked over to Arthur'=
s
in the afternoon and had a romp with Warren. Received a letter from Matt=
ie
this evening. Mr. Borden going to Florida. We went to the meeting tonig=
ht.
Mr. Brown spoke on the several passages in the 2d and 3d chapters in
revelations on whosoever overcometh shall have great rewards.
February 26, 1886.
Cloudy and cooler. Soon began to rain. It makes it very disagreeab=
le
walking on the streets but rain is a great blessing to this country.
Continued to drizzle all day and warm. Jane wrote her mother and I wrote=
to
Mary Johns. I saw by the papers that Dr. Coates killed old Mr. Keith in =
St.
Louis yesterday. A bad sort.
February 27, 1886.
Cloudy this morning and some rain last night but by 10:00 this foren=
oon,
clear and springlike, warm and beautiful. It feels like June with us. I
wrote to Mr. J. E. Stonebraker today and sent a letter to be read to the
Childrens Missionary Society 1st sabbath in next month. I am reading a
history of the Mexican war in 1845 and 1846 by E. D. Mansfield of
Cincinnati, Ohio. The war was evidently forced on Mexico by United State=
s
on very slight pretexts. It was not only to get Texas but the large
territory of California, New Mexico and others on Pacific Coast. It read=
s
like a romance. The achievement of Taylor and Scott with very small armi=
es,
moving with such rapidity and conquering and taking every important city =
and
stronghold in Mexico. The result was that the United States wrested from
Mexico nearly as much territory as all the other United States together.
what tremendous results have followed since, large states organized,
millions of gold and silver dug out of the mines and two railroads from
ocean to ocean. Another story of conquest and ambition. The Lord over
rules all for the advancement of his cause. A railroad is now pushing to
city of Mexico and poor Catholic, ignorant Mexico is open to American
Protestant enterprised evangelization.
February 28, 1886. Sunday.
Partly clear, mild. We went to Presbyterian Church at 8:00 to hear =
Mr.
Moody, for Christians only - house full. Mr. Moody and Sanky have a good
deal in their personel to recommend them. Large strong honest looking me=
n
and great earnestness of manner. Sanky's singing is most impressive and
touching. He sings the gospel with power. Every word is sounded with
unction and sweetness. Mr. Moody is a great burly man full of earnestnes=
s
and power. He took a few verses in the 25th chapter of Exodus - where th=
e
people were to bring gold, silver and every other thing they had to give =
to
build the Tabernacle - the subject: everybody has a work to do for Chris=
t,
and even the very weakest can do a great deal of work by God's help. ful=
ly
illustrated by Bible facts and facts in the history of the church. The
effects of the sermon was to stimulate Christian people to work for Chris=
t.
At 11:00 a.m., the Rev. Mr. Howard of Austin preached in Presbyterian Chu=
rch
on the Angels in Heaven rejoice over the sinner that repenteth. Fine
sermon, many good illustrations. At 3:00 p.m. Mr. Moody preached to wome=
n
in Presbyterian Church and at night he preached to men in the same place.
Great crowd and a powerful sermon on "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall=
he
also reap". All forms of sins bring a harvest of sorrow even to the
Christian in this world-instance, David and Jacob, a Divine Law. Forty-t=
wo
persons stood up to be prayed for. In after meeting he explained the pla=
n
of salvation. Pressed a decision on the sinners with great earnestness a=
nd
four persons stood up and said they had determined to confess Christ. We
took dinner and supper at Arthur's today. Had some headache this evening
and night.
