Gorham-MacBane Public Library
Betty Dailey - Librarian
The Gorham-MacBane Public Library is located at 405 White Street, Springfield, TN 37172. The Library has an extensive Genealogy Research Section with access to a photocopier, microfilm readers and printer, and microfiche reader. This is a great place for researchers to begin in Robertson County. (See Robertson County Records below for more information about specific records available.) If you had family which lived near the state or county lines, don't despair. The library has a rich collection which includes surrounding counties in Tennessee and Kentucky. In addition, there are many books, microfilm, and microfiche from Virginia, North Carolina, and other states. Printed census indexes for Tennessee are available for 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870. There is also an LDS International Genealogical Index on microfiche. Many genealogical journals and periodicals are available as well. This library also holds the Joseph W. Byrns collection.(Read his bio from the main page.!
) Jean Durrett's papers are also housed here. (They are filled with many finds from her years of genealogical research). The staff is very helpful, although they do not have personnel to provide research or provide full-time assistance. There are always many "local" genealogists who are willing to answer a question or help you with a problem. The Library does have a "Friends" group and is eager to accept memorials or genealogical books that you would like to donate - Contact Mrs. Dailey for more information. Check back soon for the library E-mail address.

Tennessee is a Cherokee word, meaning "A Curved Spoon," or "A Bend in the River." It was derived from Tanasse, the chief village of the Cherokee tribe, which stood on the shore of the river. The name was applied upon motion of Andrew Jackson, although it had previously been given to the country by popular usage. The pet name of Tennessee is The Volunteer State, on account of the military spirit of the people. The corn and pork product of Tennessee reached such great proportions between 1800 and 1840, that the land received the designation (now obsolete) of The Hog and Hominy State. Tennessee has been called The Mother of Southwestern Statesmen, having given the Republic three Presidents, Jackson, Polk, and Johnson, besides Thomas H. Benton, Hugh L. White, John Bell, Felix Grundy, David Crockett, Admiral Farragut, Houston of Texas, Gwin of California, Watterson of Kentucky, Sevier and Garland of Arkansas, Claiborne of Louisiana, Regan of Texas, and Morgan of Alabama.
First of all Andrew Jackson was not a great friend of the Cherokees and their major town was Chota not Tanase...it was a peace town....A bend in the River I've heard of, but not a Curved Spoon...what you have to remember is that generally the Indian view of history and the white view were considerably different....

Towns. Knoxville, the capital and seat of government, was established by William Blount, esq. the first governor of this territory; is situate in a beautiful spot on the north bank of Holston river, a few miles below the mouth of Frenchbroad. This town is remarkable for the treaty held by governor Blount in 1791, with the chiefs and head warriors of the Cherokee nation. It is the residence of the public officers of government. A printing office is established here, and the inhabitants enjoy the advantage of communicating to every part of the United States by post.
The Superior Court of law, the court of equity for Hamilton district, and the court of pleas and quarter sessions for Knox County, are held in this town, which is in a very flourishing situation.
Nashville, on the south bank of Cumberland river, is the district town of Mero: the courts of the district are held here. The Davidson academy, which is richly endowed, is in this town. Jonesborough, the capital of Washington district, is the seat of the courts of the district.
There are several other small towns that bid fair to increase in consequence.
hmmmm...guess I'm thinking Nashville in Davidson County...says Nashvill was the district town of Mero????

This book comes to us courtesy of Deane Coats and is:
Some relatives of the children of Dorothy and Wallace Coats compiled by Wallace James Coats
I have only put up that information on the Coats line and have listed the other family lines in this book...there seems to be a Frost/Boone connection in this book as well...some of the info is not accurate and I've noted that also...
This line was from MO to CA...and ties into Rev William Coats
It is almost 200 pages in length...
It is at:

I was making some corrections to the Newberry County SC probate index and noticed some other documents we don't have namely:
1827 Coate, Reuben & Jesse, minors J.B. O'Neal Gdn 64 9
1830 Coate, William Jr. Samuel Caldwell 61 6
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar/probateix.htm
I'm assuming Reuben and Jesse are the minor children of William Coats wife Mary, but don't recall the son Jesse in his papers whose will was probated in 1823...
William Coate, Jr., died 1830....could this be his son or one of the other William's in SC...hmmmmmm....I don't think we have any other William/William combos except these and maybe the William Coate who was down by Big John and bought the land from the Wright....will have to check this out....

I have found alot of very good information on your web site. Thank you. But I have more information that isn't there. I also have a picture taken in 1895 of my grandmothers family in Newell Iowa. She was one of 17. Her father was Eli Inman Coate. From your site and the Morman site I have connected back to Peter Coate 1514 England.
Eli Inman is the son of John Coate and Fanny Rudy, One of 7 children. I am still searching for more information on the other children.
James Coate and Mary West
Marmaduke Coate Mary Ann Mathews,
Marmaduke and Mary Coppock.
Henry Coate and Ester Wilson,
Samuel Coate and Mary Saunders,
John Coate and Elizabeth Humphrey,
Marmaduke Coate and Edith Satterthwait,
John Peter Coate and Emily Jane Buckingham,
Peter Coate and Martha Rebecca Maxwelton,
Peter Coate and Susan Metcalf.
And there I end.
My question is how do I contribute to the site?
Sincerely,
Denise C Fletcher

Has there been any definitive evidence of a brother/sister or cousin
relationship
between Thomas Coates of Nappan, NS, Canada and Susannah Coates Dixon. Both
arrived on the Duke of York from England to Halifax, NS in 1772.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Charlotte, NC, USA
Also the John Coats in Kershaw County was connected with an estate along with William Stark...now Stark was the married name for Ann, daughter of William Coats on Kings Creek if you recall....I think the estate was for a Scott...so I also got the Will of at least one Scott there William but it didn't name his wife...the other estate for the Scott shows I believe his wife's name as Elizabeth....
Now seems to me there are some Scott and Coats connections then in Kershaw County...wasn't there a couple of Scotts involved with the Coats'?
These microfilm are really small, all three would probably make up one microfilm...anyway, I just gathered the most obvious info today....spotted these names while scanning...there is no index and sometimes the page numbers are so dark you can't see them...but at any rate note sure I got all the cites either...but will be looking more at these records in the near future...
Sorry for all the emails, but I just get so excited when I find this stuff .... <g>...

One other bit of info....Randy Hall obtained a copy of James and Rebekah Coats, James' estate papers directly from the Newberry County Court in Newberry County SC...I want to thank him very very much for this...he has sent me copies of those records and I received them today as well....I will also get these up ASAP....
The reason I wanted to see these papers was because, in the Newberry County Probate Index that I had gotten from Newberry County Court some years back, they have his wife listed as Mary...now either I transcribed it wrong or they have it listed wrong...but at any rate, the cite for the James and Mary in their probate index is the same cite that Randy retrieved and it shows Rebekah as his wife....so one more little thing we got cleared up....
There isn't a James and Mary Coats in Newberry County SC with a will but James and Rebekah Coats....I will make a note of that on the probate index as well...
