I have xerox copies of two items that may be of interest to those
looking for Scottish Coats/Coutts connections; they are: GENEALOGICAL
MEMOIRS OF THE FAMILIES OF COLT AND COUTTS by the Rev. Charles Roger,
L.L.D.(pub. 1879 by the Cottonian Society) & a reprint of a MS written
by Robert Porteus, Snowdown Herald, c. 1661 pertaining to COUTTS OF
PITEUCHAR(County Fife).
The first item is indexed and has a large number of names ranging from
the 13th Century to the late 19th. It is far too long to try and send
via email, but if someone has a specific name, I would be glad to check
for it.

This information doesn't relate to my line(that I know of)and I've had
it sitting around in a file for years. Thought I would post it and see
if anyone could use it.
Found some information relating to a Coutts family of Newcastle,
Delaware(c. 1700). This information, to the best of my memory, was sent
to me from the Delaware State Library(I think). Most of the Delaware
info comes from letters and papers found in the "Rodney Papers" in the
H.F. Brown Collection. Summary follows:
a. deed dated 11-18-1746. Coutts, James and Hercules. Merchants in
Newcastle. Wm Burrows died. John French, High Sheriff too(sic)300A to
settle their suit and awared(sic)the 300A to them 5-14-1707. Hercules
died. James was his heir. James conveyed it to his son, Hercules,
Merchant in Philadelphia who 7-9-1739 sold it to Andrew Peterson who d.
intestate. Orphans Court divided it among heirs. Lydia, wife of Thomas
Rothwell received 150A. This by above deed they sold to Wm Moore for
125L.
b. Letter dated 28 Apr 1714, From Robert Reynolds, Phila.PA, to Sarah
Rodney, Kent Co. Delaware. Reference to James Coutts, Speaker of the
Delaware Assembly. Bearer to get bond of Coutts from Mrs. Rodney so
Reynolds can pay what is necessary on it.
c. letter dated 6 May 1712 From James Coutts, Speaker of the Del.
Assembly, to Sarah Rodeney(wife of Wm)of Kent Co. Delaware. She is to
deliver to Robert French papers in her custody belonging to Coutts.
d. Statement of Account(?)dated 1706-7. Made out by James Coutts in
regard to Wm. Rodeney's account. Account and receipt for household
items, signed at Newcastle by Coutts, 4 Aug 1707.
e. letter dated 17 Nov 1710 from James Coutts, Merchant and Speaker of
the Del. Assembly, to Sarah Rodeney of Kent Co. Delaware. Sends
osnaburg; also damask which is dearer than asked for. Will order payment
to her satisfaction for husband's bond.
f. Statement of account(?)dated 1706-7. Made out by James Coutts of New
Castle Co. Delaware, Speaker of the Assembly, on the account of William
Rodeney. Prices of hardware, cloth, grain given; Coutts summarized
account 3 June 1708.
**********
Next item comes from:GOD WITH US: A CONTINUING PRESENCE AND THE VITAL
RECORDS TAKEN FROM THE PARISH REGISTERS OF IMMANUEL CHURCH, NEW CASTLE,
DELAWARE(1986)p. 2: Epitaph(apparently translated from Latin)in re:
Hercules Coutts.
"NOTE: Translation taken from Holcomb.
Traveler what do you inquire
Known our friend
Hercules Coutts
Was born in Montrose in Great Britain
Thence he came to this Colony
at New Castle
In the discharge of his duties
He was indefatigable
in temper forbearing; in manner courteous.
In this country he filled many trusts
Civil as well as military.
He yielded to a premature fate
of fever and running dysentery
The 30th day of September anno Domini 1707."
*************
Lastly, here are some extracts from: CHRONICLES OF PENNSYLVANIA by
Keith., vol. II, p. 471.(summaries, not necessarily exact quotes)
By 1705, the Delaware Assembly had created 6 companies of militia.
Quakers were taxed. They were later exempted from the tax and so, the
militia commander, James Coutts, resigned his Captaincy in protest.
By 1708, James Coutts had himself chosen to the Delaware Assembly. He
served as Speaker of the Assembly.
James Coutts was listed as having given a character testimonial on
behalf of Joseph Browne, Judge of the Vice Admiral's Court, a supporter
of Sir William Keith against the new Governor, Patrick Gordon(c.
1727-1730)
**********
My personal observations: from what I can tell, the James Coutts who was
the Speaker of the Del. Assembly, was likely the son of Alexander
Coutts, Provost of Montrose. It is likely that this James returned to
Scotland, date unk, but left a brother, Robert, who is said to have
"died in America." James' other brother, Hercules, is the one the
epitaph relates to. All we can tell for sure is that this Hercules left
no descendants and that James had at least one son, also named Hercules,
who was at one time, a merchant in Philadelphia. Can't be certain of the
source, but I have another note that says James(the Speaker)had another
son named James(no info on this;only allegation). Whether Robert Coutts,
who "died in America", left descendants is unknown. This line of
Couttses descends, apparently, from a William Coutts, Provost of
Montrose, who marr. a Janet Ochiltree. This family likely descends from
Coutts of Auctercoul, Aberdeenshire.

Folks, I just received a book in the mail that makes me wish that I
had no need for sleep! I could stay up for days thumbing through it,
reading all the names of the members of these old Baptist churches.
This is going to be one of the most important books that any of us
who had ancestors in south central KY or upper TN may ever find. It's
entitled the "Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South-Central Kentucky and
the Upper Cumberland of Tennessee, 1799-1899," by C. P. Cawthorn & N. L.
Warnell. Published in 1985 by Church History Research and Archives, P. O.
Box 38, Dayton, OH 45449. It's $38 including postage and handling. You
can inquire further about it via ph. (937) 866-2895 or e-mail:

It will give us connecting links among many of our VA-KY-TN-MO
families, and probably a lot more families from other places that I haven't
memorized.
This is also a book that has many of the Indian Old Settler
surnames in it that are connected to Chief Bowles, such as Davis and
Downing and Gist or Guess.
I'll volunteer to do limited lookups from it, so send me your
surnames. By limited, I'll give you the page and name of church and then
type the full names of your surnames, if I find them in these pages. But I
won't give you the whole roster that goes with them, or I'll be here doing
nothing else for days and days!
If any of you have ancestors in these regions who you know were
Baptists, this is a book that you won't want to be without. The counties
it covers are: (in KY) Adair, Allen, Barren, Butler, Clinton, Cumberland,
Edmonson, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, Larue, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe,
Muhlenburg, Ohio, Russell, Simpson, Taylor, Warren, Wayne.
In TN the counties are: Clay, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon,
Pickett, Overton, Pickett, Van Buren, Warren and White.
In celebration,
Linne

Brushy Creek, Tn. --- that seems to ring a bell. Wasn't there a prison
there, Brushy Creek Prison where James Earl Ray was an inmate? Maybe I am
wrong.

Greetings from Mississippi!
Hi Sue, My dad had very dark(black hair?), and an olive complexion, as did
his two brothers. However, he had freckles on his back, which I always
thought was strange. I know his Limbaugh, Griffin, and Bozeman ancestors
were almost all dark of hair and complexion. They called my dad "Buck" when
he was young. Also, at work, they called him "the big Indian". He had an
aquiline nose, as in Dick Tracy. In his prime, he was 6'1", and 185 lbs
without an ounce of fat. He was a bricklayer, and could work 12 hrs
straight if he wanted to finish a job, without eating, only drinking water.
He was accused of having "superhuman" strenghth. Of course, he was a little
crazy too, so maybe that accounts for his strenghth. My uncle once said:
"All the Coates are a little crazy, some more than others".
