A Story To Live By
by Ann Wells (Los Angeles Times)
My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer
of my sister's bureau and lifted out a tissue-
wrapped package. "This," he said, "is not a slip.
This is lingerie." He discarded the tissue
and handed me the slip. It was exquisite;
silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb
of lace. The price tag with an astronomical
figure on it was still attached. "Jan bought
this the first time we went to New York,
at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it.
She was saving it for a special occasion.
Well, I guess this is the occasion." He took
the slip from me and put it on the bed with
the other clothes we were taking to the mortician.
His hands lingered on the soft material for a
moment, then he slammed the drawer shut
and turned to me. "Don't ever save anything for a
special occasion. Every day you're alive is a
special occasion.
I remembered those words through the funeral
and the days that followed when I helped him
and my niece attend to all the sad chores that
follow an unexpected death. I thought about
them on the plane returning to California from
the Midwestern town where my sister's family
lives. I thought about all the things that she
hadn't seen or heard or done. I thought about
the things that she had done without realizing
that they were special.
I'm still thinking about his words, and they've
changed my life. I'm reading more and
dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and
admiring the view without fussing about
the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more
time with my family and friends and less time
in committee meetings.
Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of
experience to savor, not endure. I'm trying
to recognize these moments now and cherish
them. I'm not "saving" anything; we use
our good china and crystal for every special
event-such as losing a pound, getting the
sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom.
I wear my good blazer to the market if I like
it. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can
shell out $28.49 for one small bag of
groceries without wincing. I'm not saving
my good perfume for special parties;
clerks in hardware stores and tellers in
banks have noses that function as well
as my party-going friends. "Someday"
and "one of these days" are losing their grip
on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing
or hearing or doing, I want to see and
hear and do it now.
I'm not sure what my sister would've done
had she known that she wouldn't be here
for the tomorrow we all take for granted.
I think she would have called family
members and a few close friends. She might
have called a few former friends to apologize
and mend fences for past squabbles. I like
to think she would have gone out for a Chinese
dinner, her favorite food. I'm guessing -I'll
never know.
It's those little things left undone that would
make me angry if I knew that my hours were
limited. Angry because I put off seeing good
friends whom I was going to get in touch with
- someday. Angry because I hadn't written
certain letters that I intended to write - one of
these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't
tell my husband often enough
how much I truly love him. I'm trying very
hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything
that would add laughter and luster to our lives.
And every morning when I open my eyes, I
tell myself that it is special. Every day, every
minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.
You've got to dance like nobody's watching, and
love like it's never going to hurt....
"People say true friends must always hold hands,
but true friends don't need to hold hands
because they know the other hand will always be
there."
If you've received this it is because someone
cares for you. If you're too busy to take
the few minutes that it would take right now
to forward this to ten people, would it be
the first time you didn't do that little thing
that would make a difference in your
relationships? I can tell you it certainly
won't be the last. Take a few minutes to
send this to a few people you care about,
just to let them know that you're thinking
of them.
Enjoy the moment

Hi Char
I have been unable to respond to Rhonda so I am forwarding this message in hopes that it will find its way to her. My server will not sent her address...?? It did before.
Hi Rhonda
That Amos in 1810 census may be Allan's son , but my records have Amos Coats born June 24, 1818, died 14 Sep 1903. That birth date was from a letter his daughter Davie Della Coats wrote. I have found no better documentation yet.

Robbie, I'd keep my eyes open to see if your William ends up
going back through the Charles Coates family that came from England
into Massachusetts in the late 1600's. I say this because both
Charles and Simeon were common names in this branch of the
family. Looking quickly I only know of descendants that moved to
Canada, and VT but I thought you might want to check it more
thoroughly. The Simeon Coates of this line was born in 1759 and
settled in Deerfield, NY. Had I previously mentioned this to you?

Hello People,
I noticed most of you looking for Southen Coates, and Canadian Coates.
Well it's gettin' cold here in Michigan too and I need a Coate...sorry
poor joke..
Her name is Eva Belle Coates. Ok let me have it that's all I know for
certain.
I have reaons to believe:
she was born around the 1860's
that she died in Terre Haute, Indiana sometime after 1906.
She probably died prior to 1947, as according to Samuel Sr.s obit she is
not listed as a survivor. I would imagine she died in the are because the
older sons and husband lived most if not all their lives within 30 miles
of Terre Haute(according to my late Grandfather).
She was maried to Samuel Mclellen Rea (1860-1947)
She had at least 8 children:
Fern,Samuel Clifton,Myrtle, Maudetta,Gertrude.Malcolm, and Guy.
Like I said most of this is speculation. The only concrete evidence I
have of Her existance is a mention of her on Fern Reas SS# application.
So if any of you might have anything I would appreciate the help.
Thanks. Tim B.
John, I tried to send this to you, but it gave me a fatal error
on your address. Maybe traffic was too busy.

Subject: Twas the Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas,
He lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of
Plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney
With presents to give,
And to see just who
In this home did live.
I looked all about,
A strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents,
Not even a tree.
No stocking by mantle,
Just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures
Of far distant lands.
With medals and badges,
Awards of all kinds,
A sober thought
Came through my mind.
For this house was different
It was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier,
once I could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping,
Silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor
In this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle,
The room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured
A United States Soldier.
Was this the hero
Of whom I'd just read?
Curled up on a poncho,
The floor for a bed?
I realized the families
That I saw this night,
Owed their lives to these soldiers
Who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world,
The children would play,
And grownups would celebrate
A bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom
Each month of the year,
Because of the soldiers,
Like the one lying here.
I couldn't help wonder
How many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve
In a land far from home.
The very thought
Brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees
And started to cry.
The soldier awakened
And I heard a rough voice,
"Santa don't cry,
This life is my choice;
I fight for freedom,
I don't ask for more,
My life is my God,
My country, my corps."
The soldier rolled over
And drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it,
I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours,
So silent and still
And we both shivered
From the cold night's chill.
I didn't want to leave
On that cold, dark, night,
This guardian of honor
So willing to fight.
Then the soldier rolled over,
With a voice soft and pure,
Whispered, "carry on Santa,
It's Christmas day, all is secure."
One look at my watch,
And I knew he was right
"Merry Christmas my friend,
And to all a good night."
This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The
following is his request. I think it is reasonable...
Please. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many
people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to
our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these
festivities.
Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make
people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed
themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.

Interesting. I estimated the children's birthdates from 1783 to
1790 because Henry and Susannah did not marry until 1783 and Henry
died in 1790. Allin had to have been born early in this marriage
with an 1801 marriage for him, but what about John. When and whom
did he marry?

Linda-
I "suggest" that family of that makeup is quite possible. The
suggestion is based mostly on gedcoms from Hunt researchers
that have Henry and Susannah being the parents of the Coats
girls marrying Hunts. There is another gedcom that has John
Pomery Coats as the son of Henry. To add to this I believe
they all, with the exception of John, show up in the same area
of Kentucky. As usual, I haven't seen any hard evidence to
support them being the daughters of Henry. What we can be sure
of is that Henry and Susannah lived in close proximity to
William, Solomon, Thomas and Wylie. They were all in the Potts
Creek area of the Jersey Settlement along with the HUNTS,
MERRELS, BATEMANS, WILLIAMS, and many other families from
Hopewell Township, Hunterdon County, NJ.
You mention that all the children would have been born
between 1783 and 1790. I "think" both Allin and John were born
earlier. Will have to check my records on that. For Henry, the
"possible" son of Henry, we only have a brief mention in the
Rowan records of the early 1800s to prove his existence.
Lots of speculation.
