Subject: Coats Family
Hi,
My name is Denise Fletcher, I am a descentant of Edith Mae Coats. She had married Earl Wallace Scholl in Kansas. My mother was born in Bennidick KS. I believe the town no longer exits. At any rate, I was wondering if your Eugene Coats was related to any of my relatives. Ediths father was Eli Inman Coats, he married Hannah Jordan, they had 15 children. 3 sets of twins. His siblings were: Elizabeth A, Samuel, James J, David R, Mark V, Abraham. At some time they moved from Ohio to Iowa to Kansas.
I have more information on the children but not who they married and where they went. I haven't found any with the name of Eugene.
If you have any information I would appreciate hearing from you. fletchercamp(a)msn.com
Thank you
Denise

Gloria just a note in reference to the posting about the Walmart
Veteran Wall--yes you can get the photos for sure--I am asst.
Manager of one of the Walmart Photo Labs -as a matter of fact I
worked at setting the display today-This is a great Free project,
the customer takes in a photo and you will get a free 5x7 and can
give permission and the other copy will be displayed. I might add
at this time the machine used to make these photos are the same one
that great black and white photos (that you do not have a negative
of ) can be copied on reg. photo quality
paper. Many folks make those copies, sharing memories, and are
very in-expensive. Just a added comment. Mary

I just received word today that all Wal-Mart's nation wide are
sponsoring a
National Veteran's Wall to be built in Washington D C. To promote
this wall
they are offering a free 5x7 copy of your veteran's pictures. They
will make
2 copies of the photograph, give you one and keep the other to
display in an
in-store collage. After that, Wal-Mart will send their photographs to
Washington D C where it will be placed on a star on the National
Veteran's
wall.
The picture must be a veteran IN UNIFORM and you will need to
supply the
following information:
Name of Veteran
Rank
Branch of Service
Dates of Service
Unit
This information will be included on the star that contains the
photograph.
I
think this is a great idea and hope that all of you veteran's out
there will
take advantage of this offer and take your place of honor on this
wall.
Also,
they are including pictures of Civil War veterans so start digging
in those
closets and boxes for your family veteran's.
Please don't send me questions but check with your local Wal-Mart
if you
need
more details. I did call my local Wal-Mart to verify this promotion
amd
received confirmation. I asked if this was being done nation wide
and they
said as long as they have a photo-lab at the store this offer is
vaild. The
deadline is Nov 11 so don't wait too long.

Oh, and I also found what I think was a record for the James Coats in Jefferson County GA...it was in an estate book...transcribed of course...anyway, it say there was a James Coats in Jefferson County GA that died intestate in 1783...so not sure this is the same James Coats wife Mary, that was on the tax list...hmmmm, maybe not that list was for 1799 and this is a death date or probate date of 1783....say...this is interesting....Char
Well, I finally got the Kershaw County SC Records up that I got yesterday....there is a page for the KY records I got but can't seem to get them uploaded...my program sticks for some reason...anyway the page is there for KY but the links don't work yet...I believe these are two Cotes records a Henry and Peter or Teter...not Coate, Coates or Coats in the KY records even though I found that Petition with Wm Coats in it...sooo, since we haven't seen the original document for the petition, that may not be correct or it is correct and Wm Coats land records didn't survive...
I'll let you know as soon as I figure out those KY records and get them up...

Anyone have any information on the following:
Benjamin Coats m. Harriett Wilder 1856
Franklin J.Coats m. Virginia Bouva 1879
William Coats m. Lavina Reed 1858
Eliza Coats m. James Atherton 1862
Harriett Coats m. Reese Gattliff 1863
Martha Coats m. Sandervane Ballou 1864
Mary Coats m. Jacob Snell 1860
Sarah Coats m. Timothy Walcott 1851
I believe there is a chance that some (maybe all) are siblings of my
Alexander Coats m. Julia Hodge
Well I snuck over to the FHC for awhile today...got three microfilm in...boy, loaded...one is the Kershaw County SC judgments...Sion Coats is on that one.
One is the Kershaw County deeds, found Joseph, David, John, Sion on these as well...Joseph deeded some land to John Coats making me think John might be the son of Joseph...seems it was in the 1790s...but I'll get the records tomorrow....there is also a bill of sale for Slaves from James Perry to someone and Sion witnesses it...a lot of slaves as in 24 or 25 it seems...
The last microfilm is the old Lincoln County KY land deeds...now this is the deeds for KY land when it was still VA...so some of the deeds say Lincoln County state of VA...anyway, not sure I'm going to find anything on this roll of film...I think any record of that William Coats in Lincoln County KY is going to be from a military grant out of somewhere...but gotta turn every stone looking here....
Will get copies of the Kershaw info tomorrow and start the KY film....

The Scottish records are available directly by computer at www.origins.net
which
is fantastic. Hopefully the English Record Office will get on with the
transfer to this system before too long.

Well, this is interesting...I was going to tell you, if you had someone that would transcribe any of the documents you are free to put them in the SC Archive...we do have some researchers that prefer the transcribed documents with the original as a reference...so do feel free to transcribe them and put them in the USGW Archive....maybe instead of my name as the contributor you could put the Coates, Coate, Coats Digital Archive? Hmmmm, guess if there are others than me listed...I should get the consent of the one who contributed to the Coats archive...just let me know which ones and I'll ask them...I'm sure they won't mind the transcriptions....but I should ask....and I don't mind the link on your family pages as well.....thank you for the compliment but I really do want to find my ancestors....<g>.....Char
I'm ccing this to our list and just want them to know that you (Tracie) are the new county coordinator for the Newberry County, SC GenWeb pages....Tracie is asking if we would be willing to let her (or someone she knows) transcribe the scanned documents and put the transcriptions in the SC Archive at USGW...I do not have a problem with this...however, there are others that have documents in the Coats Archive as well....so if you do not wish to have this done please let me know....I know some would like the transcriptions, they're easier to read...<g>....and this is a nice offer....
Tracie also has a Coats connection, see the other post, a James Coats wife Mary in GA!!!!!

That is so funny, I read the other email first and got all excited about more COATS information for me. Would you consider donating the scanned documents to the SC USGenWeb archives? This info remains yours but its a way to share it and make sure it doesnt get lost.(and it remains free to the public) I do have someone who will transcribe the documents and I have one I will send to you. I also would like to link your site up to the Newberry site under our family links page if you wouldnt mind. I found several names on there that people were researching and this is a remarkable page you have.
Do you host any GenWeb Pages?

The only Elizabeth in SC was Henry Coats and Hannah Pitt's daughter..but I don't see any Jane's....1776 in Rowan County NC???hmmm, I thought most of the Coats had left there by then?? Char
Found this on the Coats Query page....
Name: Roger Walker
From: Fort Thomas, KY
Home: http://
Charlotte - this is a great web site! My Coats line starts with Elizabeth "Betsy" Coats, b. 25 Feb 1776, NC d. 25 Sep 1845 Warrick Co., IN m. 10 May 1798 Rowan Co., NC Daniel Hunt b. 25 Feb 1776 Rowan Co., NC d. 19 July 1849 Warrick Co., IN. Betsy's parents may have been Henry Coats and Susan Elliot, but not sure. Elizabeth had a sister, Jane Coats, who married John Hunt, brother of Betsy's husband. Both Jane and Betsy's families lived in Muhlenburg Co., KY in the early 1800s. Jane and John eventually moved to Utah, as they were mormans.
Isn't this William Coats m Mary who we think was on the land of 1766? Elizabeth and Jane?? Oh, I'll have to look at his kids again....but here is a Hunt intermarriage and there is a William who had land near Michael Hunt north of the Bush River Baptist Church...
