Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Don't accept anyones genealogy unless there is cited documentation for
it that you can check...and do check it...sometimes someone else will
pick up a detail that they didn't pick up....that apparently is going to
be one of the main things to watch for on the net...we have access to a
bundle of info...but one must determine whether it is valid info...those
cites and that documentation is paramount...

Hmmmm...that Crews last name caught my eye...could that also be
Crow...??? It was Charles Crow that lived adjoining the John Cole...and
there were probably Coates in that area as well...seems there was a post
that said a John Coats lived near Charles Crow..however, I don't believe
it was someone on our list but someone that had some notes on Coats they
had collected while researching their otherlines...hmmmmm
interesting...there is a seachable archive of this list...might be worth
looking into...

Hi Jan -
I've only been working on this line for a few weeks, and only in the
last
couple of weeks came upon the information that I posted to the list
today.
My only info was Richard Perkins and Margaret Coates, no further back.
Then
I was put in touch with a very nice woman in Bolivar, TN (Martha Coates
Adams) who is descended from one of Margaret's siblings, John (son of
William and Polly Crews Coates). Her research shows Margaret's parents
to
be William Coates and Mary Ann (Polly) Crews, married 1 Oct 1801 in
Halifax, VA. Both this marriage and the marriage of Richard Perkins and
Margaret Coates are supported by available records of VA marriages (CD
229)
She also insists that William's father was NOT William, but John Coates
who
married Sarah Ann Thompson. John served as a Revolutionary War soldier,
and
collected a pension, apparently living until after 1832.
William Coates and Polly Crews Coates also had children named John,
William, Elizabeth, Sarah and others, including Margaret who married
Richard Perkins. One of their sons was named Thompson Crews Coates,
which
lends credence to the assertion that he was named for his mother (Polly
Crews) and his grandmother (Sarah Ann Thompson) wife of John Coates.
There
has been disagreement over whether William's father was William or John
for
several decades apparently.
William Coates (husband of Polly Crews) died in 1846 and is buried in
New
Hope Cemetery in Hardeman Co. Polly Crews Coates lived until 1856, and
is
also buried there. There is no indication, until your message, that
Polly
died first or that William married again. I believe the William who
married
Sarah Moorefield in 1818 may be the SON of William and Polly Crews
Coates,
because Polly was still with William when they moved to Hardeman Co., TN
in
the early 1830s.
Some of Martha Coates Adams research is published in "Hardeman County
Historical Sketches" page 100. But there is nothing in this article that
goes back before William and Polly arrived in Hardeman County except to
note that they arrived there from VA in early 1830s
By the way, the same CD 229 of Halifax, VA Marriages 1701-1850, shows a
Peyton Coats marrying a Mary Richardson 20 Nov 1816.
Having re-read the above, I'm not sure its even clear to me, so if
nobody
else understands it, I'll forgive you.

Not sure how many of you get Eastman's newletter...but this sure looks
interesting and is about a company that we had info on as
well...Heritage Quest...
This digitized microfilm is going to be the up and coming thing...

Subject: OFFICERS: Complete Census on CD
>From Eastman's Newsletter
- Heritage Quest to Computerize the Entire U.S. Federal Census
One of the major announcements coming out of GENTECH99 was from
Heritage Quest. Heritage Quest announced a project that uses
digital imaging to capture the entire U.S. Federal Census
Schedules, 1790-1920. Quoting from the information supplied by
Heritage Quest:
Digital Microfilm is a relatively new concept to genealogy.
One that has provided great interest to Heritage Quest, with
its collection of 250,000 titles of genealogy-rich microfilm.
Now the company is announcing the beginning of a new era--one
of convenience, speed and highly-improved document viewing.
Heritage Quest has now imaged the complete 1790, 1900, and
1920 federal census schedules with remaining census years
projected to completion by September 1999.
This new product line--Family Quest Archives(tm) Digital
Microfilm-will be produced on CD-ROM on a roll-by-roll basis
(one CD-ROM equivalent to one roll of microfilm) with all the
familiar NARA microfilm numbers you've been accustomed to
using. Heritage Quest has taken National Archives silver
master census films and digitized each and every image. The
process has taken time, highly-skilled human resources and the
best digital imaging equipment on the market today. But,
looking at the features and benefits, the wait and enormous
startup expenditures have been worth it.
Heritage Quest was showing late beta test versions of their first
such CD-ROM disks at the GENTECH99 conference. The software was
fun to use. The images could quickly and easily be enlarged,
switched to negative or enhanced in a number of ways. I suspect
that some pages that are difficult to read on a standard microfilm
reader will be easier to view and understand on a computer that is
running this new software. The software also allows any page from
the census to be printed locally on a laser or inkjet printer.
Heritage Quest expects to start shipping the first CD-ROM disks to
customers within a very few weeks. Project completion is expected
around September 1999. For details, look at:
http://www.heritagequest.com/genealogy/CD-ROM/

Hi David,
Any idea why a power of attorney was issued by William C.
COATES of Hardeman County, TN in Davie County, NC?. He gave
the power of attorney in matters concerning his guardianship
of the heirs of Isaac N. OAKES to Branston BAILEY, his
attorney. Bailey was from Davie County, NC and the instrument
was recorded there on 9 March, 1852. Davie County was part of
Rowan County until 1842? and is next door to Davidson County.
Wylie COATS lived in Davie
County during 1830s.

You might have a point. I have many Cole(s)/Watkins notes from early
times and a few Coats notes/Watkins for later times.
I am desc. from Wm. Watkins b 1805 who m Knox CO, TN, 1827 Margaret
Byerley, dau of Mary MOORE b ca 1767 and Jasper Byerley, Jr, of SC. Wm.
and Margaret had son Wm Douglas Watkins who married Nancy Brown
Hart...and who settled after 1852 in Loudon, TN.
A Coats family appears connected to Wm. Watkins' brother Benjamin...I'm
assuming that is their relationship. In 1839 Benj. Watkins of Knox CO,

The courthouse that was so damaged in the tornado was in Montgomery Co
not Robertson Co. I have not heard about the records that were
destroyed.
I'm sure that there were plenty. They have a FHC in Montgomery Co,TN.
I do know that all records aren't kept in the courthouse. In Robertson
Co, they
are kept in different places. We have a very good archives that holds
many
records. The library has a lot of good records. When you are passing
through
Springfield sometime, stop and visit the archives. Yolanda Reid is a
very
knowledgeable person who is over the archives. She will help you with
the data there and tell you where you can obtain whatever you're
searching
for.

Hi Linda...well, lets see...I have I believe in the Coats Family Archive
at:
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar
the Rev Service record of a John Coats, I believe it is on the Charles
Town document page in South Carolina...
But you are quite correct...we don't know which John it was...also in
the Archive is information for joining our Coates-L Research List and we
would love to have you join us...I am cc'ing this message to the list as
well.....
I am also a member of DAR...and apparently there are several Coats
Revolutionary Ancestors that have never been connected to and are not in
the DAR Patriot indexes...
In particular a Joseph Coats in Kershaw County,SC, a Col. William Coats
in Philadephia, PA and a Thomas Coats I believe in SC...sooooo
I think we do have someone in the Coats line however, that has applied
for membership to DAR under John Coats in SC believing him to be Big
John Coats...not sure but I'm sure there will be others on our list that
can tell you more about that than myself...
There is also the Will of a William Coats m Mary in the Coats Family
Archive...I believe died about the time of your William...might be the
same one...
At any rate, hope you join our research list...

Dear Charlotte,
I am researching the Coates Line and have found the John Coates
born 1740 SC, died ot-1803 Newberry SC, married to Mary? Do you have
proof of Revolutionary Service? I am currently Regent of my DAR
Chapter, and am in the process of trying to prove service for John,
however there were so many different John Coates in Newberry, it is
difficult to seperate them. My John had a son named James Robert who
had a daughter Cynthia who married Rufus Duke in Ms. Please let me
know.
Kindest regards,

Hi!
I checked in a book I have that is titled, Laurens and Newberry
Counties,
SC: Saluda and Little River Settments, 1749-1775 by Jesse Hogan Motes
III
and Margaret Peckham Motes.
I found a survey for a Peter Hakins that states that a JOHN COLE's land
was
SE of Peter Hawkins land. Although, I could not find his name showing
land
he owned. I did find Issac Cook, George Heaworth and Peter Hakins that
they spoke of. Surprisingly, a JOHN COATES had 150a and bought it around
1766.
Could they have been neighbors? I would say that they were. I don't
think
they are the same, unless they married into the others family. Now,
just
south of the Beaverdan land, right on Goose Pond Creek, a Henry Coats
owned
350a in 1771 and sold it to Joseph Freeman.
I know this is not much, but perhaps it will help you locate documents
that
will lead to your Coles.
Hope this helps.
Barbara
Virginia
P.S. My John Page Sr. had land just a little way from them on Pages
Creek.
If you ever see anything let me know. Thanks...

Guys, Wouldn't it be wonderful if each of us took the wills or
deeds on Charlotte's page that interest us and transcribe them.
Many of them are very hard to read, and it would be so much easier
to put two and two together if more of them were also typed up in
plain English. Even as I say that, however, I am currently
trying to transcribe William Cole's adminstration in 1802 and
finding it extremely difficult. When I get that sent to Charlotte,
sure would appreciate any improved readings of it. Thanks.

Well...found today a couple of interesting plats
Robert Levil 300 acres on Bush Creek and adjoining land owners are, a
Williams, Charles Crow and John Cole...not doubt it's a Cole and the
plat is dated 1768...
Charles Crow 150 acres on Little River...vacant land all around...dated
1765...
So that could mean that John Cole lived somewhere between the Bush River
and Little River...???
No sign of a William Cole yet...

I was just looking over some of these documents last night and that
Timothy Clark may be Thomas Clark...but there is a John Cole, jr in
there and a William Cots...but the next word after the Cots is to, so
the cross on the To may have just continued over to the L in Cole...John
Abernathy is in this estate as well....I thought there was a John Coat
in there but I think it's Clark instead...
In the Thomas Gary estate...there is John Cole jr and a David
Mayson....let's see Davis Mayson was involved in William Cole's estate
as well....
Also in the Robert Leavell will, he talks about land on the Bush River
and says it adjoins John Coles land...hmmmmm....there is a James Cole as
witness as well....
In John Riley's estate...Georgia John Coate signs as an administrator or
appraiser...there is a Jesse Coate in there as well...

Had an opportunity to stop by the FHC and take a closer look
at the Henry COATS and Susannah ELLIOT information on the
Ancestral File. The GEDCOM is much more extensive than I had
first thought. In addition to the Coats lineage they follow
back the ELLIOT line to Charleston and Beaufort, SC. They also
follow the HUNT line into Mulenberg County, KY. According to
this file a daughter of Henry and Susannah, Elizabeth, married
a Daniel HUNT in Rowan County. They also have 2 other
daughters, Jane and another Elizabeth?, who married HUNTs. I
know that there are Hunts living by the Coate in SC. Ever hear
of a Daniel? His father may be John. There was also a
reference to an Allen COATS in Mulenberg County also.
I have the GEDCOM if anyone would like it. It is large, 318K
before compression - 56K after. Just let me know how you would
like it.
On another GEDCOM there is a Mary (Polly) COATS born in 1804
in Rowan, as daughter of Henry and Susan. Henry died in 1790
so we know there is a problem here. But what is interesting is
that she marries a Gersham LYNN in Mulenberg County. Lynn is
a very well known Rowan name. Most of the references I use for
Rowan are courtesy of Ms. Jo LYNN White.
Somewhere in here there must be some nuggets of fact.

It appears that IE, don't know about Netscape, is clipping the
image. What you need to do is save it and use any imaging
program to view and print. I used ACDCEE (shareware available
on net) and it worked fine. MS Paint should work also.

I've gotten the last of the documents I gathered last week up...if it is
a non Coats, Coate or Coates name that is because there is a Coats,
Coate, Coates mentioned in the document...as well as the Cole name...
I found an interesting document that shows a John Cole admisistering an
estate of Susana Smith...
In some instances only the estate sale or the inventory was in the
records...in some instances the letters of administration were issued
quite a bit prior to the inventory and sale...
I included Robert Leavell's will because it refers to land on Bush
River....and that it borders Charles Crow's land...these are both names
associated with Coats...
I didn't not find any references to any Coats in other estate documents
in the sense that they were daughter in laws or grandchildren....
There is also one microfilm of Wills that I am still waiting for...it
hasn't come into the library yet...it's the film between books A-C and
L-? I suspect that is the microfilm that will contain the most Coats
into i.e. James Coates, wife Rebekah...

My appologies but I sent private email to one of Notley's decendants
this morning without keeping the email and wanted to add some
information about Jane Coats that shows up on Notley's will...
Notley's son William did have a wife named Jane Huey ....however, I
don't think she was the one that witnessed the will...James Coats was
also a witness and his wife's name was Jane Coats as well....William I
believe was a minor ....I could be wrong about that...but as a daughter
in law and potential heir to the estate I'm not sure William's wife
would have been the signer, laws today do not allow beneficiaries to
witness wills...conflict of interest sorta....at any rate I don't think
probably we know exactly which Jane it was that signed the will but we
certainly would be interested in any information that might clear that
up....
And remember we have lots of theories floating around...and they remain
theories until we find sufficient documentation to clarify them so that
goes for the Sion's and William's in SC as well as the Cole's etc....I
get excited about the Cole info in the Baptist Church records because it
all fits so well...but then I have to remember there are probably plenty
of Pitts and Williams and others that would fit just as nicely as the
Cole's....but our theories do provide us with additional clues to check
out...we'll find them all it's just a matter of time...<g>
We do have it from on Coats researcher that Garbriel G. Coats was
definitely not a son of Sion in SC or at least he has not been able to
document that....
So the search goes on....Char
