I am very interested in learning more about this George Coates, born in
PA
in 1822. I am searching for parents of Isaac Coates born in Allegheny
City,
PA in Feb of 1831. He named a son George and I am wondering.........
Isaac listed his father as John Coates of Massachusetts but I lose the
trail
there.

Subject: New Coats info
Char;
Just recieved the following:
From: katnkin(a)teknetwork.com (Hortense Wilkinson)
To: RCass6425(a)aol.com
Dear Bob,
I had the census for this family but not the information from the
History
of Trumbull County. This could be the missing George, the son of
Rufus.
Or this George could be the son of Noyes Coats.
I copied this as George W. Coates, age 28, b Pa. AGe 23 and 28 could
look
much the same. I copied him as being in Greene twp., not Mecca....
Otherwise what I have from the census is the same.
The affidavit of Jennie Huffman gave George's middle initial as "D." but
she may have been wrong.
There are unidentified Coats/Coates in Trumbull county. The ones in
Mecca
are most likely to be Noyes Coats' family. But...who is Cynthia Coates
2nd living with a Williams family, and james and Alonzo, just for a
start!
I found an old letter here from the historian of Mecca twp. in Trumbull
county, written in 1978. He had seena query I had placed regarding
Coats.
He (Thomas Kachur) wrote to me and gave me information as well as asking
for information about the Coats in Trumbull county.
I quote: "Noyes(Noyce) died in Mecca Feb 22, 1855 and is buried in the
Mecca cemetery. He was 71 yrs. of age. Cynthia Coats joined the
Freewill
Baptist Church of Mecca May 25, 1833. Noyce joined June 4 1833. Other
members of the Coats family joined the same church as follows: Lucina
Coats
- Mar 22, 1834, Sarah A. Coats Feb 22, 1840, Gilbert Coats - Feb 22,
1834,
J. W. Coats - Nov 12, 1840, Alvin Coats - Nov. 12 1842, Cynthia Coats
Nov
12, 1842.
The J. W. Coats in the church record above could possibly be the James
Coates, age 27, b. Ohio who is in the William Rice household in 1850.
He'd
have been only 17 at the time of joining the church.
Now, according to the 1850 census the Cynthia who joined in 1842 was the
one living with the Williams family. She joined the same day as Alvin
Coats. I have no idea who Alvin Coats was. I read her age in the
census
as 67; Another person read her age as 61, b. Pa. A 1 and a 7 can look
much
alike.
I made a note regarding her birthplace, as follows: "Conn. or Penn.
Appears that the census taker started to write N.Y.,; then wrote over
it,
and smudged the ink. Think it is Conn., but might be Penn. I noted that
the census taker wrote Pennsylvania as Pa. on other listings."
I don't recall ever finding an Alvin Coats in an 1840 census, but,
then, I
haven't really looked. He must be either the husband or son of Cynthia
living with the Williams family.
Billings Coats had a dau. Cynthia, m. Garlick, then Moffat(lived in Mich
or
Wisc.), Noyes had a wife Cynthia, Rufus, Noyes & Ransom had a sister
Cynthia. And there is the unidentified Cynthia in the Trumbull CO.
census.
Alden Coats, b about 1775, brother of Rufus b. 1777, was living in
Otsego
CO.,NY in the 1810 census, with three males children in his household.
Alden's probate record is 1816, and no children are named. I do not
know
the names of any of his children. His wife was Jerusha.
Jbgrigsby(a)aol.com
Looks like this fam may need an archive of its own. Wonder if Alden's
wife,
isn't Jerusha Palmer of Stonington,, CT

Subject: BANKSTON/COATES!!
Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 14:31:46 -0700
I'm back!!
Bankston Intermarried Family, COATES,COAT,COATE
Henrietta COATES wife of John BANKSTON Sr. was born in Ga. abt. 1760,and
died in Washington Parish La. She was the daughter of Lesley and
Drucella
COATES,who were descendants of Thomas and Burlah Jaques Coates of
Philadelphia,Pa.; The Bankston's and Lesley, Henry, and Nathaniel Coates
migrated to Georgia before and during the Revalutionary War where they
enlisted, and their services were in that state. They were prominent and
influential citizens of Georgia,at that time, and many of their
descendants
are still in Georgia. This is Referenced by what I already sent in the
Ref.
Early records of Georgia.
The first person by the name of Coates on American soil with whom we
have
positive
knowledge was Thomas Coates emigrant from Leicestershire,England 1683,he
was born: 9/24/1659,son of Henry and Elizabeth Coates,Leicestershire and
DARBY families
and were members of the Episcopal Church. Thomas Coates became a
successful
merchant in Philadelphia.Pa. and owned several lots at the corner of 2nd
and Market Streets where he resided. Two remain GG grandchildren yet
(104)
possese one of the lots but reside at Arab St. Thomas married Buelah
Jaques
of Philadelphia,Pa. and became a member of the Society of Friends and
was a
valued member of the Society and citizens of Philadelphia,Pa. (
Ref.Henry
T. Coates,Pub. of the Genealogy of the Coates Family.)
There are two derivations offered for the surname of Coates or
Coats,both
local in form. The first derives the name from "at the cote of Cotes" in
other words cottage. The 2nd obtains it from resident at Cotes a
community
in the parish of Eccleshall Co. Stafford, and also a hamlet in the parish
of
Prestwold Co. Leicestershire. (Bardsley's Dict. of English names.
Coat of Arms: Or (gold),a cross (blue) border of a field, Begantee (
Burke's General Armory).
The 6th generation consists of John Bankston Sr. and Henrietta Coates
Bankston descendants down to present day generations ,most of them
living
in Florida Parishes Louisiana.
This is all out of the book The Genealogy of the Bankston ( Benkestok )
Family Compiled by Edna Robertson Vascher Copyright 1947.
My basic Bankston family line connects to Henrietta's family.
Which connects many surnames. RAMBO's, ROBERTSON'S, HENDRICKS,
COX, COATES, and LAWS , with many extras.Dyson's also.
John Bankston and Henrietta had land deals in Washington Parish,La.
Amite,
La.
John and Henrietta and their family members are buried in the
Dyson/Bankston Cemetery in La.
There's alot more data on Henrietta and John's married life and their
children..
Hope this helps!!!! Let me know what you think!! Nancy

Charlotte, I just found a E-mail I've had awhile. It states Lesley had
at
least 4 brothers, Nathaniel, Henry, John, and James.

Now...we have the deed showing that the Coats and Watsons were in
Newberry SC and GA...the PA land records show a Thomas, James and
William in PA, Philly County...and now a source that says some of
Thomas' family went to GA...the Philly Coats at this point we believe to
be Thomas Coats m Beulah Jaques, James Coates who married Mary Watson
and William Coats...well we're not sure where he comes from...and at
this point I'm not sure how he is related to this group but Thomas was a
merchant in PA and in his books show up this James and
William....sooooooo
More as we find it....Charlotte

Charlotte, I'm not sure Henry was a brother, but it states in the book,
that
The Bankston's, and Lesley, Henry, and Nathaniel Coates migrated to
Georgia
before, and during the Revalutionary War,where they enlisted, and their
services were in that state.

Hi Charlotte!! I don't know if you've seen the BANKSTON Vasher book or
not, but it has some info on Henrietta Coates and her family. She stated
in
her book that Thomas and Buelah Jaques were descendants of Henrietta and
her family, also there was one of her Bankston children named John
Jaques
Bankston. This is listed in the book. There is a couple of pages listed
that
are just on the Coates family.I believe this Thomas and Beulah must be a
grandfather and grandmother or someone fairly close to Henrietta, for
her
to name her childs middle name Jaques.. I'd sure like to solve this
one!!!
I sure appreciate your time and help!!! Nancy

Hi,
I just looked at census records I copied a *long* time ago. The George
W.
Coates, age 28, (b ca 1822) in PA, in the 1850 census of Trumbull CO.,
OH,
has a wife written as Azribia, 22, b. Ohio, as nearly as I could make
out
her name in the census. I think this George W. Coates is probably a
son
of Noyes Coats, but am not sure... He might be George D. Coats, son
of
Rufus, with the initial being incorrect one place or the other. Since
this is a "George" Coats, thought I'd send you the wife's name as it
appears in the 1850 census. The given name George is used in this line.
Hort
Thanks. In reply, Anstes is probably Antrase or Antress or Antrace.
There seem to be many spellings. I have a photocopy of a record from
Connecticut and the given name has been copied in handwriting into a
record
book and is written as Ausbias. In looking at the handwriting, by
crossing
the "b" and reading the u as an n, the name is clearly Antras. Part of
the
small letter b in script and the i make an r.
So in the record it appears to be Ausbias, but is Antras. Antrase Grey
married William Coats, and if I remember correctly they did name a
daughter
Antrase, also.
GenFOrum was where I found your name. I am not very far into genealogy
by
computer but am going to subscribe to the COATS List. I may be able to
help others, and I'd like to find more about the descendants of William
and
Zipporah (Palmer) Coats; also the descendants of Rufus and Mercy Coats.
The
maiden name of Mercy continues to be elusive both to me and others who
were
researching this line years ago.
>I found 2 additions, Anstes, dau of William, father of w & Zipp, and
Hezekiah,
>possible son of H.
> There is also a few inquiries into "Coates Mills Canada", which
give a
>Robert, born in Cleaves Farms, Thirlby,Yorkshire, West Riding, England
w/son
>Thomas, w/son Thomas.
> Thought you might want tcheck it out
>
>Bob
Enough already, if you want the rest, let me know

I jsut found a note I made way back in 1979, that I thought that a James
Coats, Genesee county, NY,(now Wyoming Co.) 1810 census age 26-45 was
part
of this Coats line, but I did not know how he connected. I had thought
that he could possibly be a son of William & Zipporah (Palmer) Coats, so
made a note about him. Some of this family were in Onondaga Co., NY
in
1810.
There is a head of household in the census of Trumbull Co., OH, named
George W. Coats, and I must have picked this up from the 1850 census, as
I
show born 1822, in Pennsylvania. I think both Rufus Coats and Noyes
Coats (brothers) were in Allegheny county, PA in 1822. Noyes died in
Trumbull county in 1855; Rufus died about 1853 in DeKalb co., IN. There
is
also a James Coats, b. 1823 in Ohio, living with a Rice family in the
1850
Trumbull Co., OH census. (perhaps working for them as a hired man??)

Dear Bob,
If you should be so lucky as to uncover any new information about this
line
of Coats, I'd sure appreciate it if you'd share it with me. I hope you
find that George belongs. It seems strange that I have found no record
of
what happened to him or where he went. Incidentally, Joseph A. Coats,
the
son of Rufus, went to Mower county, MN. Some of Billings Coats
descendants
were in Michigan and Wisconsin around 1860. They probably went there
directly from NY. Just a guess.
