New Jersey Court Records
Civil court records exist for both county and state levels of
government. They can provide information concerning heirs to estates,
debts, divisions of estates, divorces, loyalist in the revolutionary
period, and many other matters. But, often lacking comprehensive
indexes, the court records can be difficult and time-consuming to use.
(Bring them on-<g>)
The State Archives has the following state court records, most of which
are indexed by complainant/plaintiff only, not by defendant:
Chancery Court, 1743-1850
Court of Errors and Appeals, incomplete files for prior to 1869
Court of Errors and Appeals, dockets: 1869-1949
Prerogative Court, administrative bonds, 1716-75
Prerogative court, case files and bound volumes, ca. pre-1900
Supreme court, case files and index: prior to 1844
Supreme Court, minute books 1681-1873
Supreme court, judgemnt books: 1681-1866
county courts of common please. 1700s-1800s (selected)
State court records for later time periods are available directly from
the courts contact:
Superior Court of New Jersey
Records Management Center
171 Jersey St., CN 967
Trenton, NJ 08625
Due to a serious fire in the State House Annex in 1980, gaps exist in
several series of nineteenth-century court records.

New Jersey State Library
Along with using the records at the State Archives, researchers should
contact the New Jersey State Library for printed or published sources
relating to New Jersey local and family history...
The library maintains sources on all aspects of New Jersey: history,
culture, people, geography, politics, etc. Local and county histories
often include historical lists of elected officials and biographical
sketches of prominent citizens. Published church records for the
eighteenth and nineteenth century contain useful baptismal, marriage and
death references. City directories help locate family residences and
businesses and may provide clues to occupations. Nineteenth-century
maps often name property owners and delineate municipal ward boundaries.
The library also has all available federal and state census records for
New Jersey, including the 1920 federal census which is not available at
the State Archives.
The library has an extensive collection of published genealogies of
families orginating in New Jersey, or families from other states with
New Jersey branches. An alphabetical "family name index"
cross-references major surnames mentioned in these histories. The
library also holds genealogical reference works, including published
ships passenger lists, and heraldry and peerage books relating to the
British Isles. Rounding out the library's family history collection are
genealogical how-to-do-it books and bibliographies.
For more specific information concerning their collections, hours and
research services, researchers should contact the New Jersey State
Libary, Bureau of Law adn Reference & Services at: 185 W. State Street,
CN 520, Trenton, NJ 08625; 609.292.6220

source: Guide to Family History sources in the New Jersey State

There is a nice map in here of NJ and when the counties were
formed...will try to get that into the Coats Archive with the other maps

Vital Records prior to May 1, 1848
General: There are no state vital statistics records prior to May 1,
1848. However, other sources of information do exist. Church and
cemetery records will often provide baptismal, marriage and burial
information. Many of these records have been collected by local
historical societies or have been published in book or article form.
The State Archives prsently does not collect these types of records.
See the holdings of the New Jersey State Library, as described elsewhere
in this guide. (later post)
County Marriages: Between 1795 and 1848, county clerks recorded local
marriages. These records list:
marriage date, names of parties, name of church (occasionally), name of
minister or justice of the peace.
Unfortunately, county marriage records rarely name parents.
These records can often still be found in county clerks' offices.
Exceptions are Middlesex County, whose records are held by the
Department of Special Collections and Archives, Alexander Library,
Rutgers University; and Somerset and Atlantic counties, found in the
State Archives.
Many county marriage records have been published as follows: here it
lists about 12 to 15 books...if you'd like me to list them let me
know...
The state arhcives also has a microfilm copy of the county marriage
records for the following counties:
Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hunterdon,
Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth (1795-1848), Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Salem,
Sussex, Warren
Colonial marriage bonds:
The State Archives has colonial marriage bonds, 1711-95. In this
period, all prospective marital partners were required to file a bond
with the governor, swearing that they had no "impediment of precontract,
affinity or consanguinity to hinder their being joined in the holy band
of matrimony." In actuality only a minority of all marriages were so
recorded. The bonds record the names of the parties married, the county
of residence, and the date of the marriage bond. Parents are named in
marriage bonds on occasions when one of the parties was a minor, in
which case parental consent was required. The names of the bride and
groom, county of residence, and date of bond have been transcribed and
indexed in New Jersey Archive, 1st series, vol. 22, which was reprinted
as William Nelson, New Jersey Marriage Records, 1665-1800 (Baltimore:
Genealogical Publishing Co., 1967)

**Dear Charlotte: Thanks so much for printing this excerpt from the History
of Callaway County. As it mentions several of my ancestors, I would LOVE to
review it in its entirety. The John Gibson and Edward Walker it mentions are
both in my direct lines. Where did you get access to it? Is it in the LDS
FHC collection?
As to the reference to the Marshall name in the Coats family...My gg-grandpa
was William MARSHALL Coats...He was the son of Hiram Coats, son of our Rev.
William and Nancy Baker Coats.

<<Can someone tell me just where in Berkeley County was St. John's
Parish
during the early 1700s? What was the name of the church(s) in the area
at
that time? >>
St John's, est. 1706, was bounded on the southeast by St. Thomas & St.
Denis,
on the southwest by St. James Goose Creek, eventually on the northwest
by St.
Matthew's (est. 1768), and on the northeast by St. Stephen's (est.
1754).
This sounds very confusing, but if you were looking at a map, I'd say it
was
north & slightly west of Charleston, maybe 30 miles inland.
There is a fairly decent map showing early SC parishes in the opening
pages of
the SC census books if you have access to those. If not, I could make a
copy &
snail mail it to you. It's not real detailed-- just like a pencil
outline map.
The parish church of St. John's was Biggin Church, located on SC 402,
approx.
1 mile south of US 52. It was founded in 1706, erected in 1712 & burned
three
times.
Strawberry Chapel, a Chapel of Ease to Biggin Church was built c1725 at
Childbury,on land bequeathed by James Child, founder of Childbury. It
was
located on Road 44, approx. 7 miles from SC 402.
The nearest present day town to these locations is Moncks Corner, SC.
Hope
this helps.

I am searching for the place of birth and parents for my ggg-grandfather,
WILLIAM COAT(E)S, b. ca. 1800, possibly NC or SC, m. "Tempy" (last name
unknown). His son was Frederick aka "Phelps" aka "Felton" COAT(E)S, b. ca.
1826 (possibly TN? SC?), m. Frances Boswell, b. (?), possibly Tipton County,
TN. Their children: 1. John Hillary Coats, b. January 12, 1847,TN,d. Apr. 10,
1900, New Madrid County, MO, m. Anna Elizabeth Roe (who was b. Sept. 4, 1854,
Humboldt, TN,d. Oct. 24, Orange, CA), 2. Rosa Adeline COATS, b. ? ? d. Tipton
County, TN, m. #1 Ed Murphy, #2 Robert Knight.
Does anyone have any clues on where to begin my search? There were some
other COATS people living in the Tipton County area between the years 1920-
1940 because my dad (now deceased) remembered a "Gid" (Gideon?) COATS, who was
related, but he wasn't sure how.
One of Hillary's descendants, Roy Allen Sands, gave me most of my
information. Roy would be over a hundred years old if he is still living. I
last visited him in Florida in the 80s and he seemed to have disappeared
without a trace within six months of that visit.
I have been reading the COATES list for some time, hoping that a miracle
would just drop into my computer and it hasn't. Have also been checking
census lists for SC, TN, and MO. Where else should I be looking?
Any help would be appreciated.

...The first settlements on the Boone's Lick road were those of Aaron
Watson, in the spring of 1816, and John Ward, in the summer of 1817. In
the fall of the latter year, Rev William Coats and James Coats, Robert
Read, Thomas Kitching, William Pratt, John Gibson, John Logan and Joseph
Callaway settled on Coats' Prairie, in the southeastern part of the
county. All of them, except Mr. Kitching, have left numberous
descendants, who still reside in Callaway County. During 1816 and 1817
Joseph Evans and Colonel Nathan Boone surveyed and sectionized most of
the county. Evans surveyed the west side of the county, Colonel Boone
taking the east side. Located in the territory of the former were four
Spanish grants and twenty-seven New Madrid claims, which had been
located in the county. The four Spanish grants embraced an area of
11,760 acres. All of these claims were near the river, except one of
640 acres, near Concord, in the northern part of the county, which was
purchased by James Leeper, and upon which he settled his two sons....
(Charlotte's note: Linda, this is my reference for believing Rev
William had a brother named James...they both came together...now it is
possible they could have been a first cousin as well...but since they
came together, I'm more incline to think they were brothers, see more
below....)
p. 144
Edward Walker located his claim on the tract of land now owned by John
R. Gilman. James Coats located on the land now owned and occupied by
M.S. Coats, who is a son of James Coats. William Callaway located on
the land now owned by Robert Berry. Robert Read settled the place where
George W. Stucker now resides...etc...etc....
(Charlotte's note: M.S. Coats is Marshall Smith Coats...also in the
Coats Family Archive there is a Henry Coats out of SC who has a son
named Marshall....just too coincidental for there not to be some
relationship...here...cousins etc....)
Please, any thoughts on this....Charlotte

They were living in Tipton Co., TN on the 1850 census. Living with them

Polina's mother, Milly (Emily) Boswell who was born in NC.
In 1860, they were in Yell Co., AR and living next door to Berry Coats.

You didn't dream it. The Dallas Public Library has such an index on
microfilm. It is for land grants and does not index subsequent
conveyances.
It is indexed by surname and by waterway. The index includes names
mentioned in a land grant such as persons owning the adjacent property.
It
is quite helpful but can be very large. I don't remember how many rolls
of
microfilm are involved. I copied all of the WILSON/WILLSON entrees.
That
is a stack of paper 3/8 inch high. The index gives the roll or book
number
and page number. Incidentally, there may be more than one King's Creek
and
more than one spelling. You have to check them all.

It was to Monck's Corner that Lord Rawdon fell back after he abandoned
Camden and from whence he advanced to relieve the siege of Ninety Six.
Lt. Col. Coates was posted at Monck's Corner in July 1781, when
threatened by Sumter's advance, and from Monck's Corner he retreated to
Biggin Church and thence down the East side of the Cooper river with the
Americnas in hot pursuit. General Stewart, in command of the British
Army fell back on Monck's Corner, after the battle of Eutaw Springs, and
with the retreat from Monck's Corner to Charleston in November, 1781,
the British occupation of the State, outside of Charleston and its
environs, terminated.
After the revolutionary war Monck's Corner seems to have reapidly
decayed. The opening up of the back country, the Santee Canal and other
routes of trad edestoryed any commerical position it had. With the
construction of the Northeatern railroad....old Fairlawn Barony, to
which the name of Monck's Corner was transferred and which is now the

This is really interesting...it is a two vol publication...included are
the old maps for each of these baronies...

The Barony lay in the track of the contending forces in 1781 and 1782.
It was on the road through the Barony and over Wadboo bridge that Lt.
Col. Coates retreated, on the 17th July 1781, after setting fire to the
Church on Tipicop Haw hill, so as ot destroy his stores, with Sumter,
Lee and Marion hot-foot in pursuit.

There is a map that goes with this...will put those in the Coats

p. 154
Moncks Corner
To the North East Quenby bounded on a creek first called "Ashbys" creek,
but later known as Quinby creek, and the bridge on which the public road
crosses the creek was and is known as Quinby bridge. It was at this
bridge that the encounter took place on the 17 July 1781 between the
British forces under Col: Coates retreating from Moncks Corner, and the
pursuing Americnas under General Sumter. After the destruction of the
bridge, and teh prevention of the crossing of the Americnas, Col: Coates
fell back upon the plantation settlement of Quenby plantation, and took
shelter under cover of the buildings, with the protection of which he
administered a severe repulse to the attack against him the same
afternoon. A Full account of the two actions will be found in McCrady's
South Carolina in the Revolution, vol: for 1780-1783, pp. 332-341. By
some misapprehension col: McCrady in his account speaks of Quinby
bridge as a bridge across Cooper river when the bridge was really across
Quinby creek but not far above the ocnfluence of the creek with the
river.

Hello Melanie - I am glad you found us. We just may be able to help each
other.
I think your Thomas is the son of a William COATS. William COATS was living
in and around Potts Creek in Rowan County, NC from at least 1778 to
about 1815. My direct line, Wylie, and Betsy ( a daughter of William's who
married Elijah NUNNELLY) stayed in the area while William, along with sons
Thomas and John, and daughter-in-law Temperance, the widow of son Solomon
migrated to Lincoln County, TN..
As you have probably already noted, some of my information is in conflict
with yours. I have looked extensively at the very legible microfilm of the
1820 Rowan County Census and can find no Thomas. There is a published index
that indicates that there is a Thomas but gives no page numbers. Another
index does not have an entry for a Thomas. The only COATS I have found is my
2nd Great-grandfather Wylie. I do find Thomas on the 1810 Rowan Census
living next to William, Wylie, John and Tempy. The entry for Thomas has I
male 26-45, 1 female 26-45 and 3 males under 10. On the 1820 census for
Lincoln County, TN we have Thomas living amongst William, John and
Temperance as well as many of their neighbors from Rowan County. His census
record looks like this. 1 male 26-45, 2 males 10-16, 2 males under 10, 1
female 26-45 and 2 females under 10. This matches up nicely to the 1810
Rowan census.
If you have found Thomas on the 1820 Rowan census I would very much like to
get a copy or the page number and I can look it up at the archives. This
would blow my theory right out of the water! BTW, I am familiar with the
Tucker book.
Following is an overview of my take on the Rowan County line of William
Coats.
This is the way I have pieced together a family headed by a William COATS
living in and around Potts Creek in Rowan County, NC from at least 1778 to
about 1815. My direct line, Wylie, and a daughter of William's, stayed in
the area while William, along with sons Thomas and John, and Temperance, the
widow of son Solomon migrated to Lincoln County, TN.
William Coats is shown on the 1778 Tax List for Rowan County owning a 100
acres in the area that became Davidson County where Potts Creek is. A Welty
Coats is also listed in the same area as delinquent. The author's note
indicates that this most likely meant that the person had left the area.
Have not seen anything else on this person.
On the 1800 census of Rowan we find William, Wylie and Solomon living in the
Potts Creek area. Solomon died in 1806 leaving a widow and the children
Sally, Tempe, Solomon and James.
The 1810 NC census for Rowan list William, Wylie, Thomas, John and a female
head of household named Temperance. Temperance is the widow of Solomon.
A 1815 Tax List for the area list Wylie and John.
The 1820 census for Rowan lists only Wylie.
We now to move to Lincoln County, TN and the 1820 census. Here we find a
William, Thomas, John and Temperance with households that match very nicely
with the 1810 census of Rowan County. In 1830 the Lincoln County census list
Thomas, James and John. Thomas and John match nicely with the earlier census
while James is most likely the son of Solomon. In addition, William BATEMAN
and his wife Tildy COATS and a couple of other of what I believe are married
daughters are living near by. This, along with the reoccurrence of surnames
such as ADAMS, MERRILL, SMITH and WILLIS in the records of this group of
COATS is what I base my hypotheses on.
This is what the family would look like if I am correct.
William COATS b. bef 1755, d. between 1820-1830
wife the same life span
Sons:
Solomon b., between 1755-1774, d. 1806, married Temperance
Wylie b. 1774-1776, d. between 1842-1850, married Sarah ADAMS 1795
Thomas b. 1775-1780, married Gilly COATS 1804
John b. between 1784-94
Betsy, married Elijah NUNNELY
There are other COATS in the area, mostly females, that are connected, but I
am not sure just how. Sion Coats married Lucy SIMPSON in 1802. When Lucy
died Sion gave his rights of administration to Wylie. He most likely is part
of William's family also.

Hello, I have just discovered your website and will share our Coats
connection:
My husband descends from Telitha Coats Smith Poteet, daughter of Thomas
and
Gilly Coats of Rowan County, NC, and her second husband, Larkin Poteet.
Reference: "Coats Kin" by D. A. Tucker, Houston, TX.
On 24 Nov 1804 in Rowan Co., NC, a license was issued for the marriage
of
Thomas Coats and Gilly Coats. Bondsman was Elijah Nannelly, and he and
Moses Locke were witnesses. The names of only three children are known:
Telitha (born about 1818), Cynthia (born about 1820), and Thomas W.
Coats,
Jr. (born about 1821) in Rowan Co, TN. A possible fourth is Alsa (born
1820).
In 1820 in Rowan, NC, Thomas W. and Gilly had in their home 3 males
under
10, one son 16-18, one female under 10 and two females 10-16. They left
NC
after 1821 and next appeared in Tipton Co. in western TN. Telitha Coats
married George A.J. Smith prior to 1840. On 2/19/1838 Alsa Coats sold a
horse to G.A.J. Smith and the bill of sale was recorded in Deed Book D,
pg.
267. On 9/24/1841, G.A.J. Smith sold to Thomas W. Coats, Jr. his crop
of
corn and tobacco. It was recorded in Deed Book F, pg. 62. In 1842,
Cynthia Coats married Bradford (Bradley) Smith, brother of George A.J.
Smith. On 12/26/1843, Alsa Coats married Elizabeth Boswell. Other
members
of the Smith and Coats family were married in Tipton County, TN.
In 1840, Thomas (age 60-65, born 1775-80) and Gilly (born about 1780)
were
living next door to their married daughter Telitha and George A.J.
Smith.
Around 1846, the Thomas W. Coats, Jr., Alsa Coats, and G.A.J. Smith
families moved to AR and settled in Magazine Township of Yell Co.
On the 1850 census of Yell Co., AR, Gilly Coats was 70 and living with
Telitha and George A. J. Smith. It is not known if Thomas Coats, Sr.
died
in TN or AR. Gilly probably died after the 1850 census in Yell Co., AR.
Alsa Coats and wife Elizabeth were listed with sons James T. (born 1846
in
AR), and Newton (born 1848 in AR.)
There was also a Thomas J. Coates, Jr. in Yell County near Telitha and
George A.J. Smith. He was born about 1834 in TN, but the relationship
is
not known. He married Sarah A. Windham (July 29, 1834-Mar 4, 1866), and
he
died June 13, 1864 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, AR. He left the
following orphans: George A. Coates, born 2/28/1854, Martha M. Coates,
born 9/21/1856, Frankie Jane Coates, born 2/18/1858, and Missouri Ann
Coates Howell, born 2/18/1862. It is not known what happened to the two
older children, but Frankie Jane and Missouri Ann were raised by James
S.
Atkins, my husband's GGGgrandfather, and his wife Elizabeth who was the
twin sister of their mother, Sarah Windham.
Other Coats families who were still in Tipton, TN in 1850 who were
probably
related to Thomas and Gilly were:
Coats, James (born 1795), Temperance (born 1796), Berry (born 1825),
Hiliary (born 1831), Daniel (born 1834), James (born 1835), and Gilly
E.
(born 1836).
Note: Berry Coats was in Cooke Co., TX in 1880.
Coats, Charlotte (born 1800), Mary (born 1830), William (born 1833),
Cordelia (born 1834),
Rebecca (born 1835), Temperance (born 1836), Thomas (born 1838),
Tillitha
(born 1838),
Eliza (born 1840), George W. (born 1843).
We have additional information on the children of Telitha Coats Smith
Poteet. After George A.J. Smith died, she married Larkin Poteet, my
husband Rodger's GG grandfather.
We would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows which family
Thomas
came from in Rowan County, NC.
