I have recently come across information from A Genealogy of the Bankston
Family that states:
Henrietta Coates wife of John Bankston (in Wilkes Co. GA).... descendant
of
Thomas and Beulah Jaques Coates, Philladelphia, PA. Other descendants
of
Thomas... Henry, Lesley and Nathaniel migrated to GA before and during
the
Revolution. My line is Nathaniel Coates (father was Henry) who married
Martha
Lucinda Lamar and also lived in wilkes co. GA. I have not been able to
get
past Nathaniel's father, Henry, until I saw this. I saw your post on
the

thanks.

COATES, Moses, produced a certificate to Haverford Monthly
Meeting from Carlow, Ireland, dated 3, 8, 1717, which stated that he had
been brought up there from a child, and had taken his wife from among
Friends in the province of Munster. In 1731 he purchased land at the
site of Phoenixville, in Charlestown, and settled there, The name of
his wife was Susanna, and among his children were Samuel, Moses, Jr.,
Benjamin, Jonathan, Aaron, and Elizabeth, married to John Mendenhall.
Samuel married, 3, 11, 1743, Elizabeth, daughter of Aaron
Mendenhall, of East Caln, where he also settled and left three children,
viz.: Aaron, b. 4, 6, 1744; Moses, b. 12, 4, 1745-46; Isaac, b. 2, 1,
1748, d. 4, 3, 1809.
Isaac married Hannah Stalker, daughter of Thomas and Grace, and had
children, - Beulah, Grace, Lydia, Rebecca, Seymour, Amy, Zillah, Israel,
and Lindley. The descendants are largely represented in the
neighborhood of West Grove.
Moses Coates married, 4, 26, 1770, Hannah, daughter of Thomas
Musgrave, of Lancaster County, who died 4, 5, 1775, leaving two
children. Moses was married again, 5, 6, 1777, to Mary, daughter of
Peter Vickers, of Plumstead, Bucks Co. His children were Elizabeth, m.
to Jesse Kersey; Hannah; Isaac, m. to Mary Gilbert, 1801; Ann, Caleb,
Esther, Elisha, Sarah, Mary, Moses, Aquilla, Amos, and Jesse.
Moses Coates possessed considerable inventive genius, and towards
the close of the last century he contrived and constructed a curious
apple-paring machine, which was at once simple, convenient, and highly
useful in domestic economy. With some slight modifications the
instrument is still in popular use. He also invented a self-setting
saw-mill, which attracted much notice at the time, but of its practical
importance at the present day we are unable to speak. He likewise
claimed the invention of a horse-rake, among other ingenious
implements. That instrument, however, was afterwards greatly improved
and brought nearly to perfection in the intellectual community of Kennet
Square and vicinity, where agricultural machinery of various kinds is
produced on an extensive scale; but as the inventors and machinists are
yet living and flourishing, their memoirs must await the historic
efforts of some future county Plutarch.
Dr. Jesse Coates, the youngest son of Moses, was born 3, 4, 1796,
and died 8, 3, 1868. The village of Coatesville was named for his
father, but became a town in the son's time. Owning a great portion of
the land, he sold much of it to enterprising men, and assisted in other
ways in advancing the interests of the place. He was a highly-esteemed
citizen.
Newton Township
Formed January 1810
Newton Township borders Darke County on the west. It is crossed by both the
Stillwater River and Panther Creek. The township contains 42 sections.
Quakers were among the earliest settlers of Newton Township. Michael Williams
and family from North Carolina settled in section 19 sometime between 1797 and
1800. Marmaduke Coate, age 68 of South Carolina and his extended family
settled in section 32 in 1805.
The township is crossed by numerous roadways, the oldest being the Newton-
Covington Pike (Rt. 48). Pleasant Hill is the only village located within the
township.

Just which one is it that you are looking for?
Stupid question? Not at all!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE ONLY MIAMI SERVED BY THIS WEB SITE
IS Miami COUNTY, Ohio
You would not believe just how many queries are received here in Miami COUNTY,
Ohio from persons looking for some ancestor who was married in MiamiSBURG or
Miami TOWNSHIP, etc. Frankly, neither of those are in Miami COUNTY, Ohio.
Miami is a very common name in southwest Ohio because of the Miami INDIANS who
once inhabited the area.
REMEMBER, THE ONLY MIAMI SERVED BY THIS WEB SITE
IS Miami COUNTY, Ohio
And guess what, Miami COUNTY, Ohio is partly located between the two Miami
RIVERS. Several miles southeast of Miami COUNTY, Ohio is The Little Miami
RIVER. It does not make contact with Miami COUNTY Ohio. And then there is The
Great Miami RIVER (two separate rivers) whose waters flow from north to south
right through Miami COUNTY. Just because a family settled on the Miami RIVER
does not mean that they settled in on near Miami COUNTY Ohio. The Great Miami
RIVER flows through several Ohio counties, including Miami COUNTY !
There is a Miami VALLEY Genealogy Index that you can link to from the Miami
COUNTY Genealogical Researchers web site. It is another (and separate) project
of The Computerized Heritage Association . Miami COUNTY, Ohio is in Ohio's
Miami VALLEY but then so are fifteen other counties of western Ohio. The Miami
VALLEY is the drainage area that feeds the two Miami RIVERS as they flow
southward toward the Ohio River. All of the counties that have tributaries
feeding the two Miami RIVERS are considered to be a part of the Miami VALLEY.
The mouth of the Great Miami RIVER empties into the Ohio River at the exact
spot where the border line between Ohio and Indiana starts its northern trek.
That place is west of Cincinnati. The Little Miami RIVER flows into the Ohio
River east (upstream) of Cincinnati.

Another place name that sometimes leads researchers astray is the City of
*Piqua* in Miami COUNTY Ohio. Sometimes researchers look in Miami COUNTY 's
Piqua, Ohio for their ancestors who lived in *Pickaway* County, Ohio. Both
sound very much alike when pronounced. Pickaway County is the third county
east-south-east of Miami COUNTY, Ohio and, in early times, there was very
little interface between the two locations as far as early population/families
were concerned.

enough to scan.
Ed
Information copied from an article in the Havesnville Review, Havensville,
Pottawatomie, County, Kansas, Thursday,
September 2, 1909
NINETY YEARS OLD, August 30, 1909
(A picture of Elder M. C. Coates, old man, bald head, long white beard)
Moses Coates, son of Amos and Jane Coates, was born August 31,
1819, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and in an early day went with his parents
to Stark County, Ohio. While in his teens went to Phildelphia, where he
learned the carpenter and joiner trade, On the 9th of Mar. 1843, he married
Miss Mary Ann Palmer, of Camden, Del. To this union four children were
born, William C. Coates, of Havensville, Mary Amelia Rinebarger, of
Clements, Kansas, Z. H. Coston Coates, of Newkirk, Oklahoma, and George
S. Coates of Wharton, Ohio, who died in 1882. Father Coates has three
living children and one dead, William C. Coates, his first born, has eight
living children and three dead; Mrs. Rinebarger has six living and two dead;
Z. H. Coston Coates has four living and one dead; and of the four children of
George Coates, two are living, making twenty-six grandchildren of M. C.
Coates, twenty of them living. William Coates has twenty-six grandchildren
living and one dead, and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Rinebarger has
twenty-eight living grandchildren and six dead and one great-grandchild; Z.
H. Coston Coates has six living grandchildren and one dead, and there are
four living grandchildren of George Coates, in all making sixty-four
great-grandchildren living and eight dead, and two great-great-grandchildren,
Isabelle, daughter of Redford Inslee, and Montell, son of Winnifred Miles.
Father Coates moved to Paris, Ohio, in about 1845, there following his
trade and while in Paris was ordained a minister in the M. E. Church and later
minister in the Church of God and preached for that denomination for over
twenty-five years. Traveled for the American Bible Society seven years, and
in 1875 came to Kansas settling near Havensville, uniting with the Baptist
Church and has been an earnest worker and one of the main ones in building
and maintaining the Baptist Church at this place. He has been a menber of
the A. F. & M. order many years. Mr. Coates is the oldest of a family of
twelve children, all being dead but two, the oldest and the youngest. R. W.
Coates, of Kansas City being the youngest and he is sixty-eight years old.
Mary Ann Coates, his first wife, and mother of his children, died May
4, 1890. He married Mrs. Emma Rainsberger March 24, 1897, and she
departed this life March 1, 1907. He married his present wife, Mrs. M. J.
Henderson September 28.1907.
To properly celebrate this unusual event William C. Coates and other
resident relatives have been planning and working for some little time that
there might be a family reunion and a gathering that would bring together the
many descendents of this aged but yet active father. The beautiful home of
Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Witham, was used for the occasion and there they
assembled, and a jollier, better crowd of people would be hard to find.
Dinner was announced shortly before twelve and the elderly portion of the
gathering were seated first, Elder Coates and wife at the head of the table.
Elder Coates returned thanks to the Father for his blessings to this great
family, and then all the good things to eat imaginable were passed and
repassed until all were satisfied. Those present and partaking of the birthday
dinner were as follows: M. C. Coates and wife, William C. Coates and wife,
Alpha Coates, Verra Lozuaway, H. A. Witham, Dollie Coates Witham,
Ernest Eddy, Ella Coates Eddy, Isla, Pearl, Hobart, Luther, Cecil, Avery,
Galen, and Rosamond Eddy, W. E. Cain, Bertie Coates Cain, Wallace R.
Coates and wife, and R. C. Coverdale, Havensville, Kansas; Henry
Rinebarger, Mary A. Coates Rinebarger, George R. Rinebarger and wife,
Hattie, Letha, Harold and Carl Rinebarger, Alva A. Rinebarger and wife, and
Bertha Rinebarger, Clements, Kansas; Ellen Parsons, Elmdale, Kansas; T. D.
Inslee, Emma Rinebarger Inslee, and Clifford Inslee, Isabel, Kansas; J. R.
Inslee and wife, and Isabel Inslee, Nashville, Kansas; Z. H. Coston Coates,
A. G. Coates, Lyle Palmer Coates, New Kirk, Oklahoma; Elvira Coates
Hollike, Wichita, Kansas; Jesse L. Coates, Chanute, Kansas; J. P. Coates and
wife and Harry Coates, Clifton, Kansas; E. M. Coates and wife, Lanore and
Cheslie Coates, George W. Michaels and wife, Raymond Michaels, and J. D.
Yambert, Soldier, Kansas; Maude Coates Kuhlman, Iva and Arnold Coates
Kuhlman, and Iva Dell Coates Stoutt, Chicago, Illinois; Robert A. Bell,
Cornelia Coates Ball, Florence, Roberta, Giltner, Emma and May Bell, Alvah
A. Miles, Winnifred Bell Miles, Montell Miles, Charles Koentz, and William
Wasson, Onaga, Kansas; Mary Durland, Centralia, Kansas.
Mr. Coates received several valuable presents and is very proud of
them.
Mrs. Sholty, Mrs. Rinebarger and Grace Harries had charge of the
kitchen and prepared the dinner for the guests.
This was one of the most notable gatherings ever held in Havensville.
Few men reach such an age and few, very few, retain the strength to that age
that Mr. Coates does. He has over a hundred living descendents, they are of
"Thee" Quaker stock, all good citizens, sober, industrious and stand for the
right in all things, and as one of the remarked, none bearing the name was
ever in prison, the asylum, or ever attempted suicide. The Review wishes
each member of this large family long life, happiness and prosperity.
My earlier message about Moses Clark Coates led to an inquiry about a
George Coates from Ohio. Here was my response:
I was sent a transcription from the Truman Coates "A Genealogy of Moses and
Susanna Coates Who Settled in Pennsylvania in 1717, and Their Descendants
Compiled by Truman Coates, MD 1906, 319 pp." book by a cousin, Gay Hewitt,
who is a descendant from Mary Amelia Coates, daughter of Moses Clark
Coates, and Henry Rinebarger. I haven't checked this information with the
original source, but the source may also have errors.
This transcription is as follows:
Amos Coates m. Jane Brinton, b. March 23, 1800
Their Children:
1. Moses Clark Coates b. 8-30-1819 m. Mary A. Young (I think this is an
error. It is either Palmer or Parmer from several sources I have)
2. Norris B. b. 10-25-1820, m. A Rudolph
3. Hannah b. 9-15-1823 m. Joseph Arnold who d. April 1861
4. Harriett b. 6-5-1824 died at 10 months
5. Hayes Clark b. 6-9-1826 m. Amelia Ware
6. Jesse Kersey b. 4-25-1828 m. Virginia Brown
7. George b. 8-23-1829 m. Mary Black
8. Oliver Ridgeway b. 12-8-1831 m. Catharine Lane
9. Amos b. 3-4-1835 m. Ada F. Frees
10. Mary Ann b. 6-1-1826 m. Joseph C. Warren
11. Howard Hill b. 1838 m. Cordelia Hall
12. Ridgeway b. 1840 unmarried
My account also gives the names of the children for most of these families.

I have not been able to locate much information about the descendents of
Moses Clark Coates (b. August 30, 1819 in Coatesville, PA, d. November 19,

interested in information about the Yamberts and Newmans.
