Hi
I have recently borrowed from a friend a book about inhabitants of North Yorshire who emmigrated to the Mississippi Valley in the 19th century. The book is quite small and is called The Dalesmen of the Mississippi Valley, it was published in 1989 and the ISBN number is 1 85072 062 2
Two families of Coates are mentioned specicically, a young man called William Coates who was aged nine in 1842 who setted with his parents at Dubuque in Iowa. and another family of Coates first names not given who settled in Dubuque a few years after this.
Hope this is of some interest

Hi.Kathleen.
Sorry I havn't got your address so I have to post this message to big wide Coates world
I have to say at the moment, and probably for another twelve months I am not putting in any time on researching my Coates ancestors. The problem is that I am involved as Treasurer and am committed to write two chapters totalling about 20,000 words of a history of the Parish of Chevening, the parish in which I live. I have never done anything like this before and whilst the actual writing is going along o k, it is the research which takes the time. There is no spinoff in the research for my Family History as none of my family, apart from my wife and myself ever lived here.
However to Coates. I have a little tree of Coates, and I must say that I have not been able to tie this particular group into my own Family of Coates, starting with William Coates baptised at Muker on April 1st 1749, and he married Ann Harker on 12th June 1772 again at Muker.
They had five children that I have found starting with Christopher born 5th April 1782, but on looking at these dates as I type this posting, there is a ten year gap between the date of their marriage and Christophers birth, so it is likely that there were earlier children. But this Christopher married Betty Metcalfe on June 5th 1804.
So it seems to me we are talking about a different family, but maybe related a generation further back.
If you send me your postal address I will send you a printed Family tree, both of this group of Coates plus two more groups of Coates I have in the same area.
Cheers
Bill Taylor

I am a relatively new subscriber to this list serve and have not yet seen
anything on Coats/Coates families from New York and/or Iowa -- which is
where my Coats ancestors came from. Do any of you have any information
about Coats families from New York -- I would like to learn who the parents
were of :
My great-great grandfather, Alfred (Alford) Coats (Coates), born about 1809
in New York state, died July 15, 1877 in Delaware County, Iowa. He married
Susan Ann Benson (b. Aug 18, 1820 in New York; d. July 5, 1890 in Delaware
County, Iowa) on July 12, 1836 in New York. She was the daughter of
William Collins Benson and Susan E. Randall.
An "Early Settlers Society" was formed in Delaware County in 1877 for
people who came in 1838 and after. The list of members includes Alfred
Coates,who came from N.Y., October 1854.
Children of Alfred Coats and Susan Benson are:
i. Henry Clay Coats, born December 17, 1837; died October 23, 1867 in
Delaware County, Iowa.
ii. Charles Aaron Coats, born August 08, 1839 in New York; died November
15, 1863 in Mississippi from illness while serving with the Company "B",
Fourth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry as a private.
iii. Emila A Coats, born June 28, 1843; died January 18, 1852.
iv. EZRA Peabody Coats, born June 10, 1844 in Chenango County, New York4,5;
died August 23, 1927 in Doland, South Dakota6; married (1) Eliza
Hetherington 18697; married (2) CAROLINE Funk 18817
v. Ervine Coats, born July 24, 1847; died May 20, 1870 in Delaware County,
Iowa.
vi. Mary Angeline Coats, born January 31, 1858 in Milo, Iowa; died
September 03, 1943 in Sac City, Iowa; married George Henry Huehl May 02,
1880 in Manchester, Iowa.
The 4th child, Ezra Peabody Coats, is my great grandfather. His oldest
child from his second marriage to Carrie Funk was Ernest Leslie Coats, my
grandfather.
Ernest Leslie Coats was born 10-23-1881 in Delaware County, Iowa; died
3-12-1948 in Huron, SD. He married Verona Jane Paris (b. 12-17-1884 in
Delaware County, IA; d. 11-13-1924 in Spink County, SD). Marriage date was
Oct 15, 1904. They had 7 seven sons and one daughter. My father Louis
David Coats was the third child, second son.
If anyone wants to more of Alfred's descendants, please let me know. Would
be grateful to get more information about his ancestors.
TIA.

I'm another descendant of the Rev. William. Coats vis his sixth
child, John (whom we call John the first ,born Nov. 10,1800,Smith
County, Tennessee, and who died Sept.13, 1848 in Callaway County, Mo.
My great-uncle Marshall wrote that the Coats family went to Missouri
with Daniel Boone and settled there. The Coats family settled on
Coats Prairie, Mo., (long forgotten, apparantely, and might now be
called Reform, Mo. Story is that both the Coats and Boones were
"churched" by the Quakers, possibly for marrying outside their faith.
The Rev. Wm. was, according to our family records, a primative
Baptist and built the first church in Missouri.
John I was the elected Sheriff of Callaway County,
Missouri, and while on his way to a Sons of Temperance meeting in
Missouri he was thrown from his buggy and suffered an injury to his
leg (probably a compound fracture). He died shortly thereafter as a
result of the accident. I have a copy of the newspaper account of
his accident, and his obituary. His son, John the second (as we call
him him our family) was only five years old when his father died.
John II was my great-grandfather (my mother remembered him well and
told me many stories of John and his wife, Elizabeth Frances Garret
Goats). I have their wedding pictures (tintypes) which I am scanning
and pictures of their "Little House on the Prairie". John II was a
confederate soldier under General Sterling Price in Missouri and was
a spy for the South. He encountered the Yankees during a soiree
behind enemy lines. (I have a newspaper article written during a centenial
celebration in Missouri about his exploits .)
John and Elizabeth had seven children, Thomas,O.M.R., Marshal, Frank,
two who died in childhood, and my grandfather, Ernest Edward Coats.
I remember meeting Marshall when I was a child. I barely remember my
grandfather who died as the result of an accident when I was three.
Ernest married my grandmother, Artemissia Foote in Chanute, Kansas.
They had four children: Novella Juanita Coats (Boydston) (my
mother who died in 1995, Helen Ernestine Coats (Pickell) who was
killed in 1974, Ronald Edouard (who died in 1996) and, still living,
Billy Richard Coats
My mother, Novella Coats, married Tom Davis Boydston Jr. in Tulsa
Oklahoma in 1928 (I never met my father as they were divorced when I
was an infanta0. I was born New Years Eve 1930 in Chanute, Kansas
(my grandparents home) and married Richard Frank Taub in January
1969. My son, Chridtopher Leighson Taub was born.Dec. 4, 1969, in
Fort Worth, Texas. My son and I now live in Tempe,Arizona.
I have dates and other information about the members of my family,
and have lot and lot of pictures that have been handed down
to me. I am in the process of scanning them and hope to add them to
this page sometime in the future.
If anyone is interested, I look forward to hearing from you. Maybe I
can fill in more of the details/dates, etc.
Hello Cousins!
The first following info was sent to me by Janice Bingley. There is a lot
of new stuff to me here. It also mentions Susannah Ennis Coate marrying
Thomas Dixon. I don't know if she is on this list or not, she didn't say.
She also sent me a bunch of stuff on the Gauntt family that was in the
Newberry District Quarterly in 1993. (Joe Lee you may be interested in
this if you don't have it.) Let me know what ya'll think. Kay

While reading "The Virginia Genealogist', Volume 16, 1972, pages 86-87, I
came across the following that I thought might be of interest to other
subscribers.
"1777, May 26-At Nansemond. Petition of persons, natives of Great
Britain, that having taken passages in the ship 'Albion' which fitted out
to take them to Great Britain, they have been waiting for some weeks in
Nansemond River for the opportunity of embarking. The ship is now with
the British squadron of Capt. Parker off Cape Henry. They request
permission to embark on board the ship where she now lies."
Included among the 80 passengers were James Coats, James Craigie and
William Reid.

I am researching Thomas J. Coates, b. Aug 1850 in IRE, d. 4 Apr 1912 in
Chicago, IL, USA.
Thomas m. Mary Anne Hickey b. ca. 1844 in Celbridge, Co. Kildare, IRE.
Thomas and Mary Anne had the following children: John b. 21 Feb 1864 in
Dublin; Mary b. 7 Jul 1865 (died in infancy); Bridget b. 1 Apr 1867 in
Clane, Co. Kildare; Margaret b. 27 May 1869 in Clane; Julia b. 14 Oct

1879 in Clane; Joseph Clemens b. 22 Nov 1881 in Clane;; Dennis b. 28 Jul
1883 in Clane. Thomas was a baker by trade.
All of the children except John emigrated to Chicago, IL, USA in 1884. I
am interested in any information on the Coates of Kildare, particularly
John and his descendants. John m. Brigid Ford, age 25, of Skirteen,
Monasterevan, Co. Kildare on 25 Jan 1886. John, like his father, was a
baker.
John Coates and Brigid Ford had 9 children: Margaret b. 12 Jan 1887;
Michael b. 7 Nov 1888; John b. 13 Jan 1891; Bridget b. 22 Dec 1892;

Kate b. 19 Apr 1901; Ellen b. 10 Oct 1903.
We have evidence that on 22 Jan 1913, Thomas Coates (b. 23 Oct 1894) m.
Mary Coyne, age 18, of Mountmellick, Queen's County (later Co. Leix.)
I would like any information on the Coates Family in Ireland, especially
