In browsing through the Philadelphia Gazette articles posted the other
night
I ran across An Admiral Coates and a Jonothan Coates in the late
1790's-early 1800's. Jonothan was Captain of an unnamed ship;; also
there
were 2 ships named for Coates; a brigantine ship named "Elizabeth
Coates"
and a Schooner named "Coates"; both were plying the eastern shipping
routes
in the above years. I'd like to know more about the Admiral and Jonothan
Coates..... grampajoec

Hello, CoateCousins!!
Good News! I have all my genealogy files back.
I've been working with my computer and taking lessons at ZD University (on internet) on Windows 95.
I've removed programs, crashed my system several times, and finally recovered my computer enough to reinstall my older version of Family Tree Maker (4.0).
I had upgraded to version 5.0 and it rejected my backup floppies for FTM. (Qualifier-only disk #10 of 22 backup floppies was rejected and that on both sets I had made of my program).
There has been major conflicts between Win95 and my Norton's Utilities and I couldn't resolve them, both Windows95 and Nortons wants to run things.
In any event, I reinstalled FTM ver. 4.0 today and tried out my backup floppies. To my great delight, FTM 4.0 accepted disk#10 and we are back up and running.
So, now, I get my printer and get CoateCousins Newsletter on the road. Ever onward and upward.
Your cousin,
Etta G. Cooper

I called SW Bell this morning and confirmed that the warning in the
following message about 90# numbers is true and you should be aware that
it
works on either business or residential lines.
========================
THE SCAM:
We recently received a call from an individual identifying himself as
an
AT&T service technician who was conducting a test on our telephone
lines.
He stated that to complete the test we should touch nine(9), zero(0),
the
pound sign(#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and hung up..
Upon contacting the telephone company we were informed that by pushing
90#
you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line,
which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your
home phone number. We were further informed that this scam has been
originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have also verified
this information with UCB Telecom. Please beware. I further called GTE
security this morning and verified that this is definitely possible. DO
NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security department requested that I
share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW! Could you please pass this
on. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you
are connected with, I encourage you to please pass on this information.

I am back after being gone over a month! My server had mail problems
and had been bouncing mail. I became unsubscribed from all of my
lists! I found this neat search engine for old Pennsylvania newspapers
from 1728-1870. I got 86 hits for Coates in Chester and Delware
counties. The papers contain Village records that lists marriages,
deaths, obituraries, etc. I hope this helps someone. Here is the link:

This is in response to the James Coats that married the Head...
Notley Coats in Chester County SC sold land to a Henry Head, I have
ordered copies of these deeds from the SC archives, not yet received.
There is also a James Coats in Chester County SC whose wife is Jane...
Just wondering if there might be a tie-in there?

Hi
An a rather serious error has been pointed out to me by
a Richards cousin of mine who has no direct interest in the
Coates line but thought that I would like to know and so I
am passing this on to the Coates list for your information.
A Genealogy of Moses and Susanna Coates, compiled by
Truman Coates, 1906 -
page 166
Aquilla Coates b. 1 Jul 1770 s.o. Moses Coates and Elizabeth
(Avery) Evans, is recorded as marrying Rachel Pidgeon,
born in Virginia 2, 25, 1801 along with their children.
This is almost certainly incorrect. Rachel Pidgeon and children
belong to page 163 Aquilla Coates b. 10, 30, 1799 in Chester Co.,
Pa.; died in Wilmington, Ohio 8, 21, 1875 s.o. John Hutchinson
Coates and Hannah Longstreth.
This error was noticed when the Smedley Family Book by Gilbert
Cope had the correct version.
You can see that if Rachel Pidgeon married the first Aquilla, he
would have been 31 years her elder which is not impossible but
Truman obviously got confused between the two Aquillas in the
various certifcates.
The Aquilla s.o. Moses produced a certificate from Gwynedd MM
dated 1, 29, 1799 and was produced at Hopewell MM 2, 8, 1802
when Rachel was one year old while the Hopewell MM in Fred-
erick County, Virginia was received from Aquilla s.o. John
Hutchinson Coates on 5, 9mo 1822 from Uwchlan MM dated
4, 7mo 1822. They married at Hopewell on 5, 15, 1823 and on
8, 4mo 1824 requested a certificate along with their son Isaac
Lewis Coates to Center MM, Ohio.
Finally, it makes more sense that it was the Aquilla s.o. John
Hutchinson Coates who married Rachel Pidgeon since one
of the children is named John Hutchinson Coates b. 4 Sep 1825
and another William Pidgeon Coates b. 7 Mar 1830 and another
Cyrus Longstreth Coaters b. 3 Mar 1833.
I suppose many on this list will not be too concerned about
this but those who have the Truman Coates information, they might
like to make this correction or correct me it they think that Truman
was not in error. Cheers, Ed

If you're interested, check out the map on the SCRoots web site. Check
