Dear Ms. Montgomery,
My COATES ancestor was also a Mary COATES (1853-1889), married to George
Lemuel Trask, probably in western New York State. She bore 5 children: Grant,
Leon, Herbert, Ken, and Fred Ray Trask.
There were apparently a number of Mary COATES personalities in the New York
State/Pennsylvania region during this time. I have no COATES records
indicating your Mary Matilda COATES however.
Have you heard of any COATES marrying into the TRASK family?
Sincerely,
Tom

Land surveys give a precept date, which are found in the un-indexed Journals of the
Governor's Council. They were transcibed in full prior to the mid 1750s and often
will contain the number of family members and migration origins...after that time
they were summarized...
The Jouranla has been microfilmed and is available at the SC Archives....there are
two series...1. British Manuscript Project, preceded by the British Public Record
Office classification and 2. Council Journals, Microfilm; William Sumner Jenkins...
The South Carolina Hitorical Magazine, No. 68 (January 197) pg. 1 has a guide to
"South Carolina Journals 1671-1775"... this is also avable at the SC Arhcives at
the reference desk...
Anyone know anything about these...?

Does anyone have any information on who Elizabeth, ca 1794-1800, daughter
of Barton Coates, married? Our families have differing information.
Thanks,
Becky
Berkley and Craven Counties were divided by the Santee River. At the Borad and Saluda
Rivers the dividing line became less defined, untill about 1769 where the dividing
line was not clear, surveyors used the county names interchangeably.
The normal porcess for securing a grant was to appear in person at the Governor's
council in Charleston to "pray" for a warrant. The surveyor general then told the
warrant and issued a precept for a survye. The deputy surveyor then made a plat.
This is really interesting: Land was granted on heardrights or family rigths of
50 acres per person in the family, including white servants and slaves. In 1755
this changed to 50 acres per person to "100 acres for each head of a family being
master or mistress and 50 acres for every white or black man, woman or child, subject
to the payment of a quit rent of four shilllings proclamation money for every 100
acres granted, to begin at the expiration of two years from the date of the grant,
failure to pay the quit rent rendered the grant void". Additional headrights could
be claimed as teh family increased. This was to encourage white servants to come
into the province and they were granted "100 acres free of quite rent for 10 years
for those that served their master the whole time of their agreement and afterwards
were willing to become planters or settlers."
This means that for 300 acres...there would be 1 head of the household and 5 other
people in the family...and if the family increased say by 4 they got an additional
100 acres...this may explain some of the land grants in various places...they took
the additional land in another local or area....
After the change in headrights...for 300 acres...there would be 1 head of the household
and 4 members of the family including any servants....
Very interesting....there is one land grant for 800 acres to a Coats...that is what
1 head of the household and 14 members in his household...that's a lot of kids....
More later....

Yes this is true. Bush river is real and in SC. I've been there and
saw a historic marker sign at the very place where the meeting house
stood, as well as a grave yard. Just off to the side of a road and back
into the woods slightly not far, many tombstones could be seen from the
road if I recall. Unfortunatley most of the stones were by this time
submerged, but a few did remain above the ground . Wanted to locate
Benjamin Pearson's, but had no luck. You'd have to do some digging. I
was able to see the corner stones or footings right were the meeting
house stood. I'm sorry I can't tell you more about a possible name
change of a river, but when Charlotte mentioned that it seemed to ring a
bell with me. I recall it was not a very easy place to find. My dad my
remember better than I . Perhaps I could ask him. Steve Pearson

Searching for any information concerning Abraham Coats of Colbert
County, Alabama. Abraham born ca. l822 most likely in KY. His land
grant in Colbert Co., AL in l847 stated he was from Marion Co., AL.
Married ca. l842 Margaret Malinda Johnson daughter of Samuel Johnson of
Lawrence County, AL. Closely affiliated with Srygley family, founders
of Srygley Church in Rock Creek, AL area. They were parents of 8
children: William Marion (4th AL Cavalry CSA), James J. (moved to
Medicine Mound, Hardeman Co., TX. ca. l890), Elizabeth, Charlotte, Fe.
(?), Modena, Mary Jane, Alta Jane. Abraham thought to be son of
Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, Benjamin Coats, who married Annie
Delaney ca. l820 possibly of Union Co., KY. Family stories suggest that
this Coats family originated in North or South Carolina. A brother of
Abraham, William, was thought to be born in Tennessee ca. l825.
Thanks everyone for the response to the Bush River question....
It seems to me that I read at one time that the Wateree River was changed to the
Bush River...in Colonial and before it was the Wateree...am I all wet on this one...<g>
The Wateree shows up on the Colonial maps but not the Bush River...and it sounds
as though the Bush River is quite large....so if it didn't show on the Colonial Maps...that
might be why...but not sure....

I am pretty sure that my relatives that lived along Bush River were in
Newberry County. Bush River probably runs in both Newberry and Craven
Counties. I know the Bush River MM was in Newberry County. Sandy Barber
Hi Charlotte;
Bush River, according to an older map I have, branched off the Saluda or
Little Saluda (I don't have the map in front of me--think it's in storage).
If you find where the Broad and Saluda Rivers converge, move NW along the
Saluda and you should bump into it. This is the area known as the "Dutch
Forks" which extended from lower Newberry into, I think Lexington County. It
was settled in the mid 1700s mostly by German immigrants, hence the name
Dutch Forks. Many of the court records of that era were signed by Philemon
Watters. Closer to the convergence of the two rivers, there is a Watters
Ferry on some of the older maps.
DJ
I have looked and looked and looked...but I can not find the Bush River or Creek
in SC...
I have found the Enoree River, Kings Creek a branch of that river and the Saluda
River....but no Bush River or Creek...
Anyone got any clues other than it's in Craven County...what's it near i.e. other
river etc...the plat map of the 200 acres for William on the Bush River, I believe
says it was dry...hmmmmm....must run off of another river....

This is how Huff and Louisa ended up in MO then OK...
Louisa's parents were Eliza Harlan and Samuel Craig...Eliza and Samuel met in the
Cherokee Nation East and were married...they were on the Trail of Tears, I think
Samuel brought a group during the Cherokee removal from TN, GA and SC to OK....
They originally came to OK, what is now Craig County OK...they lived about 2 miles
from Major Ridge...
If you recall...the Cherokee's had much friction within their ranks...and there was
a land dispute involving Major Ridge and John Ross...although Ross and his party
have denied any involvment...it is believed that he and his party murdered Major
Ridge, his son John Ridge, Elias Boudinot hmmm there was another...
At any rate, Samuel living so close to the Ridge's and Eliza was a relative of all
three men...he moved his family to Knob Noster, Johnson County MO...
That's how they ended up in Missouri...then Huff probably in the Civil War met Louisa
their daughter and after Eliza and Samuel died...Huff and Louisa went back to OK....Huff
was born in Callaway County MO....
Craig County is named after Louisa's brother Granville Craig.....
There apparently is a newpaper article in the Vinita OK museum that reports this...although
I have never seen it...never been to the museum....

Just one comment on the Parks Notes:
You will see a reference to Attacullaculla, the Cherokee Chief. Attacullaculla (various
spellings) is my 7th great uncle, his sister is Tame Doe, my 7th great grandmother,
her daughter is Nancy Ward. Nancy supplied food and clothing to the Americans during
the Revolution and is an American Patriot. There is a Chapter of DAR named after
her in Chattanooga TN and I entered DAR under her.
Attacullaculla's, called The Little Carpenter by the whites, son was Dragging Canoe
and he fought on the side of the British in the American Revolution...he was a Chickamongua
(?) Cherokee and went into GA...if any of you have high school students, look in
their American History Book under American Revolution and you will see Attacullaculla
named as well as Dragging Canoe....
So those stories about the Coppocks being captured by the Indians...well, that was
probably some of my ancestors that were involved and I think I've read where it was
Cherokees that did the kidnapping...
Just interesting to see one of my lines named in another line....
Also if the Coates' went from SC to TN...well...there was an entire section of land
in the middle of TN that was the Cherokee Nation...part of it....so a journey from
SC to TN ment that they went through Indian Country...I'm not sure they did that...too
dangerous...
Also part of TN where Robertson County is was in a land dispute with KY...apparently
KY won...so if you have ancestors in that area some of the records I understand are
in KY...I think I saw a reference to the KY census...people that lived in the disputed
area are found in the KY census not the TN census...I've seen maps of the area and
it's just a small strip on the map over the border area of TN and KY...it probably
covered several of the border counties for TN...
