Got the first batch of land records from SC I ordered...I don't know what happened
to the second...sent them both at the same time...at any rate...
On the SC index...if the index doesn't show the name Coats in the deed record...it's
not a Coats record...not sure why they are indexed like that...I think that Coats
Tract and Coats plantation info ...it's probably land owned by a Coats and then later
divided among several people...they just show the deeds to those who puchased later.....
Anyone notice in that Notley Coats Will that he also had a son named William?
At any rate all those pages 4 or 5 with Marmaduke Coate was merely the fact that
he surveyed land for other people...it is not a deed of his land...
I got the plats for Notley Coates and Sion Coates...their names are spelled Coates
in those records...they have maps to their land...so I will be scanning them...I'm
going to scan as many docs as I can when I get them...it's just faster and not as
time consuming as transcribing them...and in case you haven't noticed I'm not the
best transcriber...so quite frankly if I were you I'd want the original docs anyway...
There are also some leases for William Coats and his wife Mary in Charles Town...I
may have to transibe those...the copies I get from the SC Archives is well...even
big than legal sized...at least 16 by 20...my poor little scanner just can't handle
that large of a page...
As I say, transcibing takes time...so it may be awhile before those docs get up...anyone
have any suggestions for scanning them let me know...I've thought of reducing them...but
that old writting is hard enough to read without tinkering with it...<g>
I do hope the archive is or will be of benefit and please, let me know if there is
anything you would like to put into it...
Also the young lady who is transcribing the Sumner Co TN land records....is also
in school and like the rest of us does this in her spare time...so be patient...the
Coats info is already in the archive anyway...<g>

Seeking information about Allen Coates born 1824, probably in Northwestern
Pennsylvania. Died 3 April 1899 at Glyndon, Crawford County, PA. Married
Esther Crosby who died 16 Feb. 1888. They had a son Emory Orton Coates
born 12 July 1855 at Spartansburg, Rome Township, PA who married Stella R.
Myers, born 15 Nov. 1859 at Union City, PA. I would like to find
information about the parents of Allen Coates. Thanks for your help.

Charlotte,
In going back over some old Email I had some things to share on this one.
I will stick my comments in and with " " so they stand out. Not etched in stone just my findings

Hi Linda,
I think Francis was part of William Coats family who was in Rowan County
from before 1778 to around 1812. He and part of his family moved to Lincoln
County, TN. She may have been the daughter of Solomon, his son, who had a
lot of interaction with the
Merrell family. He purchased land from Jonathan Merrell on Potts Creek next
to William WISEMAN and Drury PEOPLES. Andrew Merrell gave bond for John
ADAMS who became guardian of Solomon's under age children after his death.
If the birth of Francis is 1790, then Solomon is most likely her father as
William was getting up in years by then. Why I am so sure that Francis is
connected to William? Aside from being from the same area and having so
many common surnames in their records, there simply doesn't appear to be any
other COATS in the area at that time. There was a Henry Coats that died in
1790 who was married to Susan ELLIOT that appears to be in Rowan but I have
not found much here.
Pat Trask at PatT499578(a)aol.com is also connected to Francis and Amos. Drop
her a line.

I am trying to find the parents of Frances Coats who married Amos Merrell
about 1808 in Rowan County, North Carolina. According to her headstone,
Frances was born in 1790 (most likely in the Rowan County area). She is
buried in Spring Creek-Bethlehem Cemetery in Shelby County, Alabama. In
1810, Frances and Amos Merrell lived in Rowan County, NC next to Isaac
Wiseman. In 1820, they were living in Lincoln County, TN. In 1823, they
moved to Shelby County, Alabama, and they were still living there at the
time
of the 1860 census.

Sorry...but someone had emailed in reference to the Coates/Botts connection and I
had deleted the email but resecived one this morning and wanted to pass it along...
davidbotts(a)juno.com
I'd say with that last name, he's probably pretty familiar with the subject....
I had also hoped to be more familiar with the Excite mail etc...and have more in
the archive before now...except...I strained a muscle in my back...so I have been
limited for the past two and 1/2 days and it's still sore...but I just can't do nothing...<g>
For those of you that Have seen the archive, you know it's up...I am not creative...it
is functional...
I you have a suggestion for a subject...or would like to add files...please by all
means let me know...
If you would send me just an email first...to let that you have something for the
archive and how large it is...that would be appreciated...when you send attachments
such as scanned docs or files...send them to: coats(a)cci-internet.com my server
doesn't change them..they come through as jpg or txt or however they are sent...
If you have a family file such as FTM, GEDCOM of PAF...we can include those also....since
I am familiar with FTM, it will convert both GedCom and PAF files...or if you'd like
an HTML page that outlines your family tree that's ok also...whatever you want to
put in there....certainly not the only ones....
Old family letters, documents...bible records...
The only thing I ask is that it is ready to be put in the archive...I've noticed
with the ascii text files you have to put in paragraph breaks for the screen size
or browser size...other wise you have one line of text that extends to the end.....I
have know idea why...but you have to put in line breaks before it will look readable....
So...let me know...I'm trying to get all the TN docs in there...have them started
but not finished....
Remeber this is an archive for Coate, Coates, Coats and variant spellings....it's
so people looking for their connection don't have to reinvent the wheel each time
to find their connection....so if you want to add something please feel free...

Am looking for information pertaining to O.P. (DUB) COATS, married Annie
Hamilton, lived in Rusk County, TX, children Delilah, Percy, Claud, Frankie,
Till, Will, & Jim. Delilah Coats married Louis Allen Williams sometime before
1897, assume in Rusk County, TX. Delilah died sometime after 1934 in Overton,
TX. Don't know if this line is connected, but the "P" in Peyton was a long
shot since I do not know what the O.P. stands for.
Thanks for any info.

Hi, Charlotte,
Saw your posting in VA looking for info on COATES. ARE YOU A
DESCENDANT OF SAMUEL? His wife was one of my HOWERTONS
of Essex. Please advise who WILLIAM is: I have no record of
the descendants of Samuel and Mary Howerton Coates except
for two daughters, Mary Coates, and Ann Sherwood. (I have
a lookup offer on the USGENWEB Essex Co., VA homepage
just posted---please visit the list [220 Surnames]).
Look forward to hearing from you!

Charlotte,
David asked me about William H. COATS, so I referred him to you. I think
he's bent on building the biggest family tree in the world or whatever.
I don't know how far off the COATS are from the BOTTs but I'll bet it's a
way.
If nothing else, he'll have the largest number of disjoint trees... <G>

Hi Lawyer 4u, ---I dont have the names that you listed on your query, but I
have information from the will of Peyton H. Coats' will dated Nov.183, 1878.
From --"Bedford County Tennessee Wills and Vital Records from Newspapers"
It states that:---- Wife Elizabeth Coats gets one third of all lands, 212
acres on the Murfreesbobo Pike, 3 1/2 miles from Shelbyville, where we now
reside, adjoining the lands of T.C. Whiteside, U.E. Peaaccock, Mrs. Tune,
Raleigh W. Coates and others. Daughter Mary Haily. Daughter Martha Rowland.
Daughter Nance. Son Raleigh H. Coats. Grandchildren :Sallie, William,
Julia, and Peyton Coats, Children of my son Peyton Coats, Deceased.
Executors: Son Raleigh H. Coats and son-in-law thomas Nance.
Witnesses: Joseph H. Thompson and W.H. christopher.
Probated
November 1879
It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, but it does list a few Coats' names
that may fit in somewhere
The Coats name has come up in my line so I am on the alert when ever I see
the name anywhere.
Happy hunting, KWERB5(a)aol.com

Well, it's started...I have some docs there...they are all Text files...which means
you can view them from the web or download them to your system...
You will need a text file viewer...notepade...wordpad or a similar word processor
to view them...I've put the New Jersey files up first...because those I think are
the ones no one has seen yet....
Also, I'm still figuring our how to receive attachments...when you send your docs
to include...coats(a)lawyer4u.com is a forwarding address and now mail sent there goes
to excite mail...apparently excite mail changes a .jpg or .bmp file to something
called FEMAIL...have not idea at this point what that is...so....as soon as I take
some of the research files from my other site and transfer them to the new site,
I think you can send files there...but too many emails is what overload my 5MB of
web space there is I'll have to see...
As soon as I figure out the excite mail...I'll let you know...
There is also a MSWord View available at the Microsoft site that will view text files
and its free...also I'm going to experiment with PDF and TIF files for original docs....TIF
viewer is available at the VA state digital library...you need it to view their docs...it's
also free and then the Acrobat Reader if also free for viewing PDF files....
Also let me know if you have docs you want to put there...what the formats are...scanned
or transcribed....etc....
More later.....

The George Coats who married in Darke Co. married a widow Mrs. Gabrilla
(BRANDON) SWISHER. She died the next year; no record of children.
No other record of George in Darke Co. in the marriages.
There was a George in Miami Co (next county east) in the 1850 census but I
don't have that.
