Hi all,
Good birthday party and mini-reunion in Stringtown, Atoka Co, OK with
COATE/COATS-WILSON descendants.
Saturday, 28 June 1997, found in 1860 Clarke Co, AL Census a Marmaduke
COATE, 70 years old, Surveyor, b SC living by himself. Isn't it likely
this is our Marmaduke "Duke" COATE, son of "Little" John COATE?
According to "Annals of Newberry, SC), Marmaduke and his family moved to AL.
Does anyone have any data on Nancy ROTTON? I've seen some listings by
someone working ROTTON, RAUGHTON, ROUGHTON, ROWTON. Perhaps a posting
to NC-SC-ROOTS or whatever would garner a response.
Must close. Server still cutting me off.

Subject: James Hart - Edgefield Co. SC
Date: Saturday, June 28, 1997 9:56 AM
There has been a book written and published by his wife after the death of
the author. The book is "James Hart and his descendants" written by
Charles Gerton Hart.
James Hart (ca1750-1830) married to Elizabeth _____ lived in what was at
that time Edgefield Co. S.C.
James's son, Henry Hart (1783-1857) married Nancy Rainey and they lived in
Bedford Co., TN.
In the book the author writes that Nancy Rainey Hart went to Pope Co, IL to
live with her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and George Washington Gossage
in 1854. Nancy died 17 Oct., 1871 and is buried in the Hart-Gossage
Cemetery near a small community called Oak in Pope Co., IL
The author states that the unusual inscription on her gravestone reads:
"NANCY wife of Henry Hart and daughter of Capt. John Rainey of the
Revolution. Born Nov. 11, 1784, died Oct. 17, 1871. Aged 86 Yrs 11 Mos 6
days. Member of the Baptist Church for 70 years"
Henry and Nancy Rainey Hart were my ggggrandparents. Are any of you
familiar with the Hart-Gossage Cemetery in Pope Co. IL?
Does anyone know if it has ever been read?? Do you know if there is a
Genealogical Society for that area?
Elizabeth Hart who married James Coats was the daughter of Henry and Nancy
Rainey Hart and is my line.

All of the info I have on the NC Coats came from: Coates-Coats and Related
Families History, by C. Stanton Coats 1982. Published by Glover Printing
Company, Raleigh, North Carolina. He also says the Coates-Coats family
settled in Johnston County in 1768...not sure if he means that's when they
arrived or that's the time period he was working with...his address is:
C.S. Coats, Rt. 1, Box 394, Smithfield, NC 27577....books available as long
as the supply lasts...this was published in 1982....
Charlotte.....
John Staples sent this too me....Ed if you contact him and he says he has
not available copies see if he minds if we copy this one...or would let us
put it on the net...there is no copyright...but I was going to write and
see if he would ok it....

Kersey Coates is the son of Lindley Coates and Deborah Simmons.
Lindley Coates is the son of Isaac Coates and Hannah M. Stalker and
Lindley was also the brother of my ggggrandfather Seymour Coates
who was married to Deborah Preston.
As far as I know they all resided in PA before Kersey went to what eventually
became Kansas City.
I wonder what he was doing in that book. He most definitely is descended
from Moses Coates and Susannah Weldon who settled in PA in 1717.
Unless someone knows differently.
Could I possibly have the name of the book and the publication date and place
if you have it. I would like to add this to my data and give it proper
accreditation.
Thanks for posting that info. Any more info on Kersey and co. would be most
welcome.

It appears that C. Stanton Coats' book is the descendants of the Johnston
County NC Coats...check the N C census records at my research site...
But his book seems to follow a John Coats, out of Johnston County NC and
John's son William Henry Coats and his children...William Henry's will is
in here also.
William Henry Coats m Sarah Stephenson
children: Alvin Coats b Western Johnston Co. NC 1807 m 1828 Ginsey
Johnston
Cynthia Coats b c 1810 Johnston County m April 4, 1837 Alvin Austin
Zilla Coats b c 1812 m 11/3/1832 Moore Stephenson
Amos Coats b 1817 m1 2/1/1840 Mary Turlington m2 Tobitha Turlington m3
Emiline Tuley Turlington, there are a total of 16 children for him....
William Henry Coats, Jr. b 4/8/1819 m1 Martha Elizabeth Smith Penny
Thomas Coats b 12/12/1824 m 7/18/1845 Beddy Stevens
Emily Catherine Coats b 1825 m 3/23/1843 James Bartley Johnson
Penelope Coats b 5/9/1826 m 11/14/1843 Jacob Flowers, Jr. she died before
her father William Henry Coats he names her as his deceased daughter in his
will..
John Rufus Coats b 11/3/1831 m 1/8/1851 Nancy Elizabeth Byrd
All of these children were born in Johnston County NC...his books takes
many lines down to the mid 1900s....
William Coats m Anna Blackman 12/29/1812, Johnston County NC
they had two sons and one daughter, in 1823 he acquired land in Harnet
County (present day) First son: Josiah Coats b 1816,
Sarah Coats daughter of John R. Coats, Sr. b late 18th Century m 7/25/1809
Edmund Tomlinson ....So far as is known, they did not have any
children..She was listed as a widow in the 1820 Johnston County census.
John Coats Jr. b c 1802 m Candes Collins April 17, 1822
William Benjamin Coats m unknown first Coats marriage in Sampson county
C. Stanton Coats' book brings these lines further down...
There is also a Kersey Coates whose father was Linley Coates of
Philadelphia area who went to Kansas City in 1854 where Kersey Coates
bought a hotel from W.A. Eldridge of Lawrence Kansas. It became known as
the Coates House Hotel, very swanky in the late 1800's. Also the Coates
Opera House was owned by Kersey Coates. He died in 1887 with an estate
worth two million dollars, he was a Republican and worked actively for
Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Kersey Coates earned the title of colonel in the
77th Regiment of the enrolled Missouri Militia. Heirs to his estate were
Arthur Coates and his bother J.L. Coats and Mrs. Reed. The Coates Opera
House burned in 1901. He states the names of Arthur Coates, Kersey Coates
and Lindley Coates are found in the genealogy of Moses Coates and wife
Susanna, by Dr. Truman Coates. It may or may not be that they are
descendants of Moses Coates who arrived in PA in 1717.
more later...any one specifically interested in these lines let me
know...or if you like I can just continue to bring them down little by
little....<g>

Can anyone tell me the meaning of a "deed of separation" or "separation
agreement" ? I run across this in early Southern records. Someone said they
thought it had something to do with divorce, but I don't think so. I think
it was the separation of property, for example, when a widow planned to
remarry and wanted her property from her deceased husband kept separate from
her intended husband's for purposes of inheritance for her children by that
previous marriage. Can anyone confirm this or give me another explanation?
Thanks!

RE: Coats
Hi,
I was looking for Laura Agnes Coats's sibling and parents.
Census Nebraska 1900 showed that Laura was born Feb 1849 in Illinois. Her
father birthplace was Vermont. Her mother's birthplace was New York.
Laura Agnes Coats was married to James Harrison Thrasher on 14 Aug 1866 in
Ottowa, LaSalle Illinios. I have her marriage certificate show that she was
guardian to G.H. Thrasher at this time of her marriage because she was
under age of 18 years old.
I was told that her father name was Walter Coates but I am not able to
vertify any records of Walter Coates. Also the Coates were a wealthly
family and owned a large estate in the south. Laura Agnes Coats was
"Southern Belle". I am not able to find where is 'South" area?
Notice the name of Coats and Coates. Coates was told by family members
however I vertify that her maidem name is Coats from James Harrison
Thrasher's Pension Record.
Is there anything you can help find her siblings and parents?
Thanks for share...
