Hi, Karen,
Re: Levi Coat. We think our Sniders are linked to the Coats family.
Panola County Marriage Records (TX) has a Levi Coats married to Martha
Snider May 5, 1858. Wonder if your Levi Coat is this one?

Hi
Donna Burry on ROOTS-L looked up Kersey Coates for me
and sent the following. I am related to Kersey through his
grandfather's brother, Seymour Coates who married
Deborah Preston. They all come from Chester Co., PA.
I would welcome further information on Kersey, such as
when and where did he marry Sarah Walter Chandler.
The following information is from the book FRONTIER COMMUNITY KANSAS CITY TO
1870:
"....an important newcomer....Kersey Coates came from a wealthy Philadelphia
family, and by the 1850's he was associated with Thaddeus Stevens in the
practice
of law. During the winter of 1854-55, he left Philadelphia for a western trip,
partly on his own account and partly as agent for an emigrant aid company which
had been formed in that city. Coates was thirty-one at the time. In Kansas he
became prominent in the Free State movement. Robinson suggested his name for
territorial delegate to Congress, and Samuel Pomeroy acknowledged Coates's
effective fund-raising activities in Pennsylvania. One Howard Committee witness
mentioned a violent altercation during November, 1854, election at wich "Mr.
Coates, now of Kansas City," had been present. Coates mad no secret of his
opinion of the proslavery men on this occasion, and was driven from the scene by
an angry mob.
"During the same period...returned east to be married and to bring his young
bride to their new home, he was back in Kansas City by the spring of 1856. In
November, 1856, his name appeared in the paper in a list of directors of the
newly organized Kansas City, Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad Company. From early
in 1857 there were advertisements for Coates & Company real estate brokers.
In 1864 the Chamber of Commerce appointed Johnston Lykins, Kersey Coates, and
Theodore Case to set the dormant Cameron (a railroad that would connect Kansas
City, Hannibal and St. Joseph) and project in motion again.

Hello O-Brien and others interested. The Coate lineage you have going back to Moses Coates, 1331, has over a 20 year period of search, only come from one source fondly referred to as "The Old Coate's Genealogy". It was supposedly created by a hired professional genealogist hired near the turn of this century by a Coate family that wanted to see if they were related to the Coat Thread Company. This history of it comes from a handwritten note on a copy of this "Old Coate's Genealogy" filed in the Family History Library of Salt Lake City. After extensive research on my and many other researcher's parts, the line has no support. The genealogist didn't give any of his/her sources, which leads me to doubt their "Professional" training. None of the people until Marmaduke and Edith are in any first hand records. The dates go back to time periods where first hand records were not kept. The couple of generations including Marmaduke and Edith Coate who are in acutual Quaker records have dates that precede the Quaker records by 20 years or so. The lineage also states that Marmaduke (173?-1822) who married Mary Coppock was the son of William and Rebecca Sharp Coate. This is absolutely verified as NOT TRUE by a deed record between Barzilla and William and Rebecca Sharp Coate's daughters, that states that all of William and Rebecca Coate's sons died without issue except perhaps for Barzilla himself, as he was still living at the time of the deed in 1783. This record was filed in Huntderdon Co., NJ and discussed land inherited from grandfather, Marmaduke Coate (husband of Ann Pole) in Burlington Co., NJ. THERE IS NO SUPPORT FOR THIS LINEAGE. Where it can be checked, it is full of errors. Please forgive my bluntness, but the constant prevalence of this lineage needs to come to an end.
If you can disprove anything I've said, that would be great. If not, I'm just really trying to save you years of work to come to the same conclusion. Good luck either way. You can see the Coate lineage choices on my homepage at www.ancestory.com. You might want to start with Marmaduke Coate, b. 173?, to learn the most about the weaknesses in this Coate line. Most Coate's don't have a nicely fitting package yet. There is a lot of data giving us likely theories at this point. The one below is just one of them. I'd love to talk some more, if you can forgive my bluntness. We're all just trying to find the truth. Please let me know how I can help. :)

Steve and others interested. If you have absolute proof that you are through this Marmaduke and Ann Pole, then yes, Ann Pole's line does go back through much Royalty. Pat Moran has done extensive research on this line and has a couple large chapters that give oodles on it. His book is called the "Moran Exodus From Offaly". You can reach him and order a copy at 2114 Sieber Street, Houston, TX 77017. (713) 944-2012. He did this research while believing he was a descendant. When the book had gone to press, he found the Hunterdon Co., NJ deed record that took away his descendancy to this line. Please be aware that if you think you are descended from any of the male children of the William and Rebecca Sharp Coate, the deed clearly proves that all their male children died without issue (without children) except perhaps Barzilla. You can write me back if you want details. The deed record is up on Charlotte's site on the Internet under NJ records.

Does anyone have info on Thomas Coates who lived in Amherst, Cumberland
County, Nova Scotia? Born probably abt. 1765, married a Miss Henry, had
two daughters, Alice b. 1793, and Margaret. Thos. died in Smith's
Creek, Kings County New Brunswick.
Any info would be appreciated---
Thank you,

Hi
I am corresponding with someone who has a Coates line. She
only knows the following:
>I know very little about my Coates line. Mercy Coates married Simeon
>Stephens. Their daughter, Anne was born March 16 1745/1746 in Stonington,
>Connecticut. She married John Udall on January 17, 1768.
Does anyone recognize this line?

Hi Jeanne
Thanks for confirming that there is a Sandusky Townsip in Richland County.
At least that much of the information is correct. I get the feeling that the
information that Isaac is buried somewhere there might have come from
his wife. I don't know how else whoever wrote the Harlan book would have
known that.
Concerning information that you have on the three cemeteries, are the names
listed those who were buried there or who have grave markers? Some Quakers
did not believe in markers or sometime they just place a plain stone there.
Also,
do you know if any of those cemeteries were Quaker?
As for writing to the Crestline Public Library, I would rather that you were
having a look around since you know what I am looking for and can
correspond with me quickly. Asking for information via snail mail is a
slow business. If you do think that a letter there would be of some use
I will do it, otherwise I will give it a raincheck. I do appreciate your help.
Your Mercy Coates sounds like she could come from the New England
Coates line since she was in CT. I don't know anything about it other
than it is separate from my PA Coates. I'll ask about it on the Coates
list.
I have this on my Richards who first came to America:
According to the History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family by Alpheus
Harland, 1906:
Joseph and his wife, Jane, came from North Gate, in the parish of Witney,
in the county of Oxfordshire, England and settled in Chester County,
Pennsylvania near Village Green. The exact date of his coming is not
known, but it was prior to the year 1682, as from old maps and land
records it is known that a deed was given to him for 500 acres dated
26 Jun 1682, and situated upon the west side of Chester Creek.
As for Richards, I know that some moved from PA to Cecil County, MD
in the early 1800's so I suppose some could have gone to Virginia too.
I will ask Barclay Richards who see to know a lot about the Richards.
Many thanks for your help,

I am researching the COATS line in Johnston County, North Carolina.
Unfortunately I only know my grandfather's name who was Winfield
Coats, and my great-grandfather's name who was Emmet Thomas Coats.
Any info. or leads would be appreciated
Is there anyone who knows of any records for a burying
ground near Crestline, Richland County, Ohio?
According to the History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family,
by Alpheus Harland, 1906, I am told that my gggrandfather
Isaac COATES, husband of Sarah Ann RICHARDS died in 1843
and is buried there. They were married in the faith of the Society
of Friends in 1837 in West Chester, PA. The information is
probably correct since I have a record that Sarah Ann was
living on a farm near Galion, OH in the early 1850's.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know of
Quaker burying ground in that area.
